UMass Lowell Post Game Thread

Please ignore my comments in the New Haven thread. This is more like it.

People were right to be concerned on Monday. UConn didn’t play like this on Monday. People didn’t know if this team was capable of playing like this. I know Lowell an inferior team but UConn didn’t play this well in any game all last season. That is what people wanted to see.

We were missing two starters against New Haven. Concern is one thing. Writing off the whole season based on one short-handed game was an overreaction. Anyway team played great tonight and Reed is going to be a problem for our opponents this year.

Some of the posts in the New Haven postgame thread aged like milk. Hell of a game all around.
The posts on New Haven game that expressed concern over how they played that night were right on. Posts that said they couldn’t fix it or were doomsday were way off. Its a new team with lot of new players and expectations are sky high. They didn’t play like a top 25 team on Monday. Tonight they played like the number 1 team.

1st half - great intensity and defense vs a team that was too nervous to make some easy buckets. Only 3 turnovers in the first half.

2nd half - lost some intensity. Some helter skelter ball and too many early turnovers before the starters went out. Got to have 40 minutes of intensity vs top teams, not 20.

Great to have Reed back - obviously he makes us so much better on offense and defense.

As above, better defense overall but still too many fouls. Hopefully that's a point of emphasise in practice and the next tune up game.

Seriously deep team - even after taking out the starters, they continued to extend the lead until the 3rd team came on and then we basically held serve.

I can't remember the last time we had a 60 point win - I'm sure someone here has that stat.

One more tune up game and then things get real.

I'm liking what we have.

That one felt good and put some doubts in the rear view mirror. Reed is an absolute monster

The UNH game is still crazy to me considering they got their doors blown off by Columbia tonight. Is Reed that much of a difference maker?

Answer: Yes

......... we literally dominated Michigan state... you really think the new haven game showed us we weren't gonna be a good team? This fan base has become wayyyy to spoiled by the national championships. Now its every year we win a natty or its a failure. Just 9 years ago I would have taken going to the tourney.

That was @Nameless. And here's his crow to eat

You sure are testy, eh? I was coming right here to own the post myself... Even though I never said "this team isn't capable of going on 10-0 runs." I said we didn't go on one on Monday, and I questioned why. Here's the post:

"I may be off here, but I don't think we had one 10-0 run last night. I know we had at least one 9-0 run, but don't think we ever hit 10 points in a row without UNH scoring. I know we were without 2 starters but it did make me pause a bit. Why weren't we able to dominate this team? A lack of effort after playing much higher quality opponents in our exhibitions? A lack of a "killer mentality" in this squad? I honestly don't know, but I wasn't overly happy with what I saw last night."

For the record, I wasn't panicking on Monday like some were I was just disappointed in the performance. Even with the injuries it just seemed flat. Not tonight though, great rebound performance and I'm happy with what I saw.

Can’t really expect to have the same intensity when you’re up 47 at half on an inferior team.

Imagine being at work (like I was) and getting score updates like these on your phone.

That's why Hurley called an early timeout in the second half and cussed out the team - You have to keep the intensity no matter the opponent. You have to learn 40 minutes no matter who you are playing. Taking your foot off the gas when up 47 is the same as taking your foot off the gas when you're up 12 against a dangerous team.
