Except total points. Not sure what to make of this but great guard play, hounding defense and free throws. Based on the eye test we played well, but analytically (boxscore review) we can do better.

To beat a team like Memphis with these stats shows how good we (i.e. our guards) are right now, even with the others having an off game. I really believe that we have a very good chance at a long tourney run when we get everyone playing well, consistently. Could be injuries, Memphis speed, noon start or any number of explanations, but to me the boxscore still looks ugly.

Anyone with rose color, glass half full glasses, see something I'm missing?

Memphis is a good squad with a lot of talent and shoots season highs against UConn from three. Goodwin has been mostly shutdown inside though by UConn. Not sure that's rose colored glasses, but give the opponent some due here, I guess.

Only 6 turnovers.
SN and RB both made more or as many free throws than Memphis attempted
11 steals
42% from downtown, 9 made threes
Won even though they were hammered on the boards
Somehow Napier's will and resolve didn't make the box score.

How many other teams have speed like Jackson/Johnson to get behind our D for continuous open layups? If we get one of those matchups in the tourney, yeah, we'll have problems. Memphis gave us their best shot, IMO, and UConn still won.

Hey they had a lay up line look for a real long time yesterday and I can say this we didn't contest 90% of them so how could we foul……..our Huskies gave up 81 points and really had a bad game on the ball man, let them have way too many easy buckets. Can't foul what you're not guarding!!

Bottom line on the lay ups is that Bazz and Boat both made some awful decisions off the high post picks, didn't read well and the help wasn't good although their speed is tough to help on once they turn the corner. The defense was a bit scary like it or not……Deandre had many misses at opportunities to cut the guards off after losing their guys as well as Giffey……..Boat didn't do a good job getting back on transition D and most were on him, got caught backpedalling a couple of times and they're too fast for that to happen, he had 0 rebounds compared to Bazz 5 so most of the time that should have been him stopping or trying to stop those run outs …….also way too many guys allowing that baseline to their guys and that created the opportunity to move the ball to the open guys. When you think of how many easy baskets Memphis had yesterday, especially that end of the 1st half and beginning of the 2nd half, it's amazing this team toughed out the W.

They will need to be a lot better on D as we get to the tourney's!

Can't all be perfect huh?

We need to make lay-ups. No one misses more than us.

55 points for Bazz and Boat, just an amazing effort.

Our lack of turnovers, and both Boat and Bazz's assist/turnover numbers look good.

Back in cupcake December, the tenor around here was that we'd never beat a good team with our weak front court. Yesterday, we were thoroughly outrebounded at both ends, yet we took only one fewer shots than Memphis. One of the biggest reasons for that was the steals. Gambling for steals was a big part of allowing a lot of layups, too, but enough of those gambles paid off to get us 10 shots that we didn't earn on the boards.

It appeared to me that for the first time, this season's interpretation of the hand checking rules helped us tremendously. Dixon, Johnson and Jackson got called for it numerous times, and as a result, we spent almost half the game in the bonus, where our superb FT shooting saved our collective arses.

We got outscored by 18 in the paint. I don't think I've ever seen a team make so many uncontested layups against us as Memphis did yesterday.

Probably not a coincidence that this went down while Brimah was nailed to the bench (he only played 6 min yesterday). I think Amida would have helped contest/alter some of the "gimme" points we were offering up, but obviously Kevin Ollie thought the negatives outweighed the positives of having Brimah in there. Anyone know why Brimah didn't see more minutes? The announcers mentioned something about the game being too fast for him, but curious if it was something else.

The lay ups weren't the bigs men……….actually Shaq Goodwin was their concern and he only got 7 and 6 so I'm not sure why we can hang anything on the bigs? our guards were beaten badly off the dribble and left a couple open 3's out there so while they played real good on the offensive end they need to be held accountable……they won the game mind you with their offense but they also made the game hell for the bigs on the other end not taking care of detail…….so Brimah or not, they were fine!

I want to watch the game again this week to confirm, but it seemed like we did a poor job rotating ball stoppers to the top of the key when Bazz/Boat/Lasan got into the lane on offense. This set us up for a back-peddling track meet on any missed shots and even some makes if the shooter (boat/bazz) fell down and couldn't recover quickly. A lot of that had to do with Memphis' personnel with three or four guys able to take the ball coast to coast in a little traffic.

Had Deandre or the bigs been scoring/shooting, this wouldn't have been so much of a problem because our guards would still be on the perimeter and ready to get back. You gotta credit Memphis recognizing that this was our vulnerability and exploiting it. I'm happy they did because now we know where to correct it. Again, I'm gonna watch the replay but when a shot goes up on offense there is always supposed to be a ball-stopping guy rotating up top so we don't get quickly beat back down the court.

Overall this was a great challenge for us and illustrates the different ways this team can win games. Obviously we're all optimistic and excited going forward. I'm not sure what I'm gonna spend my time doing in a month and a half when this is all over.

Anyone with rose color, glass half full glasses, see something I'm missing?

Legitimately positive elements
- Good shooting from deep (43%) and at the foul line (81%) [where we spent an awful lot of the afternoon]
- Only 6 turnovers
- Boat with 6 assists and only 2 turnovers
- Nolan able to play 28 minutes and stay out of foul trouble

And in the "silver lining" category
- DD is definitely coming back for his senior year

Gotta at least be real here.

If we went to Memphis and we had 23 fouls called on us to 12 for them and they had 36FT attempts to our 9, we would be saying home job by the refs all the way. Right?
If you actually watched the game you would know many of those fouls were blatantly obvious. They even swallowed the whistle for a few near the end of the game. Memphis is a very tough out, very quick, and strong. I think we have some of that quickness, but we chose to play it slower. If they get their steamroller moving they'll run most teams out of the gym.

I was shocked, that with all the lay ups, Brimah barely played? Any idea why?

I like it. Our new defensive strategy, give the other team lay ups to keep them off the line. That's one way to keep our bigs on the floor. :)

I wondered after seeing the boxscore and then watching the game the next day taped whether it was a team plan to ease up on trying to stop drives to the basket. The two big differentials in our favor were obviously free throws taken and made and TOs.

I'm re-watching the game on s slow Sunday afternoon and I think the reason that Amida did not play much (in addition to his fouls in the first half) was the way that Goodwin would move our guys around. Also, the thing about the game moving too fast for Amida included the fact that UM's players are so quick that they neutralized his reach. He also struggled to anticipate what to do to get to the right spot--forgets to move his feet and then his reach is not enough.

KO substituted to the point where he went to TO to get someone who could hold his ground. Nolan came in and played much better/held his ground much better against Goodwin in the second half. When I re-watched the first half when Tyler got a lot of minutes, I felt that he actually played quite well. He made a number of good plays...big rebound, little hook, nice catch and lay-in, stopped Goodwin by himself, etc.

This was the disparity in points in the paint and rebounds. Ollie felt that having Brimah in there was costing us more than it was giving us against a team like Memphis. So we went a little smaller. The stat sheet shows that the big with the most minutes was Nolan at 28. Giffey had almost as many minutes off the bench, and we had a heavy dose of Napier, Boatright, Kromah, and Daniels.

The smaller lineup prevailed, so Ollie's Gambit worked. I'm not sure there's anything else that needs to be assessed from the box score. We've shown in previous games that we can rebound and we can score in the paint when we need to...

Stat of the game is turnovers. Cant expect to win when you just give the ball away as Memphis did yesterday.

If Memphis could handle the ball 20% better they would be really dangerous in March. It's not that they aren't careful with it - they have a bunch of guys who simply don't dribble well.

Do not try and tell the guy a few rows behind me UConn got the better of the whistle.

UConn beat Memphis 9-8 in OR. The rebounding on the defensive end was where the major discrepancy occurred and that was a combo of Memphis either making uncontested shots or getting a turn over both resulting in less opportunities for UConn to rebound.

UConn took Goodwin out of the mix but the guards didn't adjust to the drives. Worked out well because UConn's guards never got in foul trouble and Memphis, which took the opposite approach, lost Johnson and lost it on the free throw line. UConn loses this game if they were not one of the top free throw shooting teams in the country.
