UConn vs. Wake Forest

Is recruiting really something we're worried about with a future HC? I understand it's great Narduzzi brought great players to Michigan State, but I am not sure we're going to have those options. I'd think we'd be more focused on bringing someone who is a great developer of players and a great game day coach. It seems unlikely to me that anybody is going to have any immediate recruiting success for us.
 
Wake Forest only has 4,775 undergrad students...and its $43,000 ayear tuition cost is pricey.

Wake has actually done well considering their limitations as a small private school slung along side big schools like Clemson, FSU, VT, Virginia, etc.

Saying that, making Wake football perennially competitive is a tall order. Staying in the top half to third of the conference is a more reasonable goal.
 
I think that you can't discount the Wake AD's assertion that he wants a coach with Private School experience. What he is really saying is : "To be successful here, you need to be able a different problem set than what you face at a big public university".

Depends on how you define success. If we can bring in talented, coachable kids that stay eligible and eventually develop into top flight 4th and 5th year players then that is success to me.

In that case looks like Lembo is their guy (Elon, Lehigh). . . . One Indiana paper wrote a whole story about Lembo and Wake Forest. Not once is UConn mentioned. Interesting

Thank you. This is the point I tried to make earlier. Grobe took that program as high as it can possibly go and that was a career mark of less than .500. Unless they plan on paying what UCONN can pay, I'd say the more attractive job is UCONN. State school with full backing of the state (evidenced by $1.5B just allotted to the school) with the drive to get into a P5 conference like the B1G. Our job is definitely a stepping stone job so I think that in the next 1-3 years, if the new coach can get us back to bowl eligibility (which we frequently did pre-PP), he will garner lots of national attention.

Makes sense, Lembo's big win this year was against an ACC school (Virginia). I have a feeling Warde's first target is Narduzzi so maybe it doesn't matter.

I still think it is easier to win at UCONN. I'm biased but I honestly think UCONN is the better job. What good is being in auto bid BCS conference if you have very little chance of getting the auto-bid. They have the better conference, but we beat them in every other category.

Yes because it matters that UCF is going to a BCS game this year going forward.

If you don't understand the recruiting impact of being in a non BCS league versus a BCS league I don't know what to tell you.

Is Wake Forest a great job? No of course not. Is their conference affiliation a huge advantage over UConn's? Of course it is.

BTW with the playoffs starting next year the non playoff BCS bowls will have even less importance and even smaller attendance. Nobody cares now and going forward they will care even less. Meaningless games.

Care to elaborate? Why don't you think we would have "those options" in recruiting? Most coaches will tell you that the coaching game is 40 or 50% recruiting. UCONN has a lot to offer and we still can out recruit them in basketball. Also name a high profile coach in the entire northeast where Narduzzi would have heavy competition recruiting against? That being said, I like Narduzzi for several other reasons, some of which you mentioned, so it's not just about recruiting.
 
By my count, Wake holds two advantages over us: conference affiliation and located in better recruiting grounds. I think that the latter is neutralized significantly being a small private school and 4th fiddle in their own state. Our next coach should be able to bring in some kids from NJ, PA, OH, FL and the mid-Atlantic region. Perhaps even TX if playing SMU and Houston have any impact whatsoever. If we were bidding against NC State or UNC, I'd be more worried about this than I am bidding against Wake.

Conference affiliation is obviously our biggest hurdle to overcome. It's not like UCONN isn't trying to escape AAC purgatory. If they pay our next man comparable to P5 school salary ranges, it will be yet another example of UCONN showing that it wants to be in the big leagues. It's Warde's job to confidently convey to candidates that UCONN is doing everything in its power to get an invite to the B1G or ACC. But while we sit and wait (and watch mediocre grandfathered schools like Wake enjoy better conference affiliation), our mission is simple: get back to bowl eligibility. Against our AAC mates, this can be achieved and, if/when it does, the coach will be granted Sainthood. The wildcard in all of this is if/when UCONN gets the "B1G call", if our football program is back to getting bowl invites, the head coach will see his job get much easier if he should decide to stay at UCONN.

The average ACC salary is just shy of $2.0 Mil and that number includes 2 outlyers (Jimbo Fischer at $2.8 mil and Frank beamer at $2.5 and who's been at VTech since Columbus came from the Old World.). Whoever hinted at $3 mil being market is off base as well. After a cursory Internet search, The only conference where the average salary is around $3Mil is the Big 12, where Mack Brown's outlying salary tops out at over $5.5 Mil. I don't think a first time HC gets remotely close to $2.5 mil in base salary, let alone $3 mil. $2.5 Million is about 6x what Lembo currently makes.
 
I'm shocked no one has suggested we hire Jim Grobe. He's got more BCS appearances than Bo Pelini and Lane Kiffin put together! :p

I wasn't arguing that... my response was to a point trying to be made that WF can't/won't pay what UConn can pay. They have the means if needed.

Interesting thing to me, though is that for the most part, the whole UConn search has been conducted much more quietly than some others. Mostly guesses and conventional wisdom with a few obviously planted agent stories. I think Lembo is a terrific coach and I'd love to have him, but I also do think that he could well be the guy Wake covets. I think we'll be surprised with who we land. I'm coming around on Clawson as my 2nd choice. I much prefer guys with head coaching experience to coordinators, though Narduzzi could be a good fit. Despite tdh's position, you actually do need to play defense and run the football some to win in the northeast late in the season. He's bring that.

Gotcha, but I don't think Wake pays a "private school coach" what they were paying Grobe if it took Grobe 19 years to get to that level. Secondly, I don't see a bidding war breaking out in the $3 million base range for a first time HC, or a coach currently making under a $1/2 Mill.

If Clawson is 31-31 lifetime at BG and has a stinker in season 2 here without great recruiting, this ship will totally run aground. On the other hand, Lane Kiffin fired him and that's a big plus for me.

Just this from Fowler but being how down low it seems to be being conducted - it doesn't surprise me. No need to draw attention to candidates. (see Miami Ohio snatching ND OC today).

There's been no contact between UConn and Bowling Green's Dave Clawson, which sort of surprised me. Thought they might kick tires there

I still hold out hope Cristobal gets a look :)
