With 2 outs Daniels gets in base due to an infield error, another run scores. 13-4 UConn.
 
Bottom 8th, the UConn offense goes down in order. 13-4 UConn.
 
Top 9th, Hamberger gets a lefty batter out for the 1st out, and then comes out of the game. Mayer takes the mound. This is just the 2nd game Mayer has been in this season.

Mayer gets the next 2 outs to end the game, UConn wins 13-4.

Either Shaw or Cooke, if they’re effective that day, can go as long as West or Ellison are giving us consistently. The problem is getting through the first 3 games without having used Shaw or Cooke enough to let them do that. Realistically, that requires either at least one blow out (win or loss) where we get some innings from back end pitchers, or us getting at least 16 innings or so from our 3 starters.

Yeah. Good length from starters is key. And not overuse Afthim. Cause we'll need him.

I would like to see him take the last 2 games off so he is strong for BET and beyond. The 2 2/3rd inning saves are wearing him down.

Afthim has not been overworked this year overall. Last year he was incredibly babied by the staff but he’s been given a reasonable workload this year.

If so, I would put him on a pitch count. Closers who come in to get work most of the time are not efficient and usually throw a lot of pitches without the adrenaline flowing.
