UConn-USF post game thread

I don't know - did you think UCONN played really well in the 4th Q? Were we tired? Our subs certainly were not in the game so it was all starters, yet USF took it to us. do you think Geno will look at the game tape of the 4th Q and say "this is how we want to remember the game and this is how we want to play"? So yeah, forgettable in that it wasn't a great quarter for them...

EricLA I agree it wasn't a good 4th quarter. You could almost feel the difference in the game. Part of it was Auriemma slowing things down, part of it was fouls committed and part of it was the continued poor (probably too harsh) shooting. I don't know about tired. Jose's team was on the floor for the entire game. In the last quarter they just seemed to have more energy and Laksa was making some shots.

Yes. It’s tough to choose between the game-changing play of Azurá, and the pure courage of Gabby. They are separate categories for me.
I would say Gabby also qualifies for game changing too. She impacts the game all over.

I guess I'm just a pizza purist. Not surprising, given that I live 4 blocks from the original Sallys and the original Pepes. How about a compromise? Extra cheese pizza with a side order of pineapple.

I doubt she'd eat that cheese! LOL. But I get your point...

You are one tough customer! LOL
I'm vegan like Gabby and I still love my pizza - but no, I don't put pineapple on mine!

I eat no meat pizza all the time. Peppers and mushrooms, asparagas tips, tomatoes, onion and cauliflower. I also like artichokes, olives and broccoli. But I gotta' have cheese. I also like shrimp and lobster but I guess that doesn't meet the vegan restrictions.

Now we'll probably both be banned for being whiners. I saw Husky Nan's post about mustering the torches and pitchforks.

I think USF got energy from Laksa and her ability to make difficult shots. And, for the first time in three games she was able to score.

Nope - we don't eat any animal products. But I will tell you that there is a great place where I live that makes me a mushroom and roasted eggplant pizza and it's so good I don't miss the cheese. Plus I've found some great alternatives..

.-.
But after awhile I kind of felt for Lou and Gabby. Gabby had to be in there while limping around like a elder, while Lou just couldn't shoot her way out of one of her worst shooting nights.
Lou has been playing on a bad ankle for several games. Seems to be getting worse.

Won’t disagree with that.

Am I completely crazy (don't answer that), or did I hear the "Seminole War Chant" faintly in the background early in the 3Q during the game broadcast on TV???

It's OK with me. Florida State is one of my other favorite teams.
Florida State kept UConn out of the ACC. They are the epitome of evil (along with BC)

Wow, I'm learning a lot. What started out as a lark has turned into an education.

I think Z was the player of the tournament. Gabby was the player of the game. I'm embracing the millennial mindset where everyone gets a trophy. Lol. 3 games in 3 days! A win is a win!!! No need for unrealistic expectations. They are now the only undefeated team. Something to celebrate.

Gabby was all-world.

We missed at least 6 layups. :(

I still think Laksa is a great shooter. She helped cut the deficit in the 4th.
Laksa makes some incredible shots, no doubt, but her percentage against great teams, turns into a good shooter for my money. Same goes for Ogunbowale.

.-.
PS. How do you get the accent for the a in Azura? I used to know...

On a mobile device, such as Ipad or Iphone, just hold down the “A” as you type it. You’ll see a pop-up balloon with alternate characters. Slide your finger onto the balloon and select the one you want. I hope this is helpful.

A good summary, methinks.

No! I don't want to see any pineapple on the table while eating my pizza. I love pineapple, but it has its place...with ham, on a banana split, on the fresh fruit breakfast bar, but NOT on, or served with pizza.

I pouted before the game that this might be a tough one...it was, no gimme.
I still think it is possible that the team loses...not likely, but possible.
More likely is a couple of tough, grind it out wins in the last three games.
So, we wind up with the Natty, but its not the perfect artistic success.

The key starters seem mentally tired; the time off will help, but perhaps not as much as we hope

Lou is off her shot, Pheesa disappeared at times; happily re-emerged near the end; Kia's been so preoccupied with D, the last couple of games, that it's taken a toll on her offense. Danger, Gabby and Z all have been better. Walker seems almost ready

We will see very clearly Geno's marshaling his forces in the next few weeks.
He is the grand-master at it, but others are gaining.

It may be enough, but perhaps not.

a decastich?

Didnt know where to put this, but I wanted to compliment the announcing team of Frede and Lobo. I know it helped that the game was closer, longer, but I felt they worked together really well. Frede reported much more on the game and Lobos stories were more relevant and shorter without Lawson to chat with. Hope they use this pairing more!

It is a little concerning to me that Geno did not see fit to insert any of his "true bench" players (except for 7 min by MW), even in the mop-up minutes. You would think he would give them the chance to play in the Tournament Championship game. I wonder if they were truly that bad in practice.

How good would Gabby be with two good hips? Or one good hip? or 1/2 a hip?

Frede is old school; not a cheap ESPN wannabe.

Tournament time in close games (a lead of less than 30 IMO) is not mop up time, it's time to keep running the offense and defense.
Oh, the Seniors got the chance to play in their last Tournament Championship game.

Molly and Kyla were queued up to check in with 2 minutes left, but there was never the right break to put them in.

Yep, felt bad for them. Was hoping one of the players on the court would foul someone to stop the clock, but maybe USF was in the bonus.

While I agree that the defense was very good, I believe that the offense also played well. They got good shots, especially early but they just wouldn't go in.

It's like those days on the course when the cup is the size of a dinner plate and the next round it's a shot glass. Missed bunnies and wide open threes.

Some days the lid is on the basket, and the easy "point blank" shots just won't go down. UConn should have had at least another 12 points on the bunnies, layups and free throws that were missed.

I’m a Connecticut pizza snob with the best of them, but I make a Hawaiian pizza with freshly-cut pineapple and honey-cured ham that’s to die for - I ain’t lyin’.

I first came across pizza made Hawaiian-style with Pineapple
in New Zealand in 1995.
Thought it was appalling then (as was the pizza)
I mean...What do Kiwi's know about making pizza.
Nothing much has transpired in the interim to change my mind.
