So feeling good about the three game winning streak, and on a total whim (because I know how meaningless it is at this point in the season), I looked at the Warren Nolan RPI this morning. Our 4-7 squad sits a remarkable 16th. I’d ask how is that possible, but we saw the same thing last year where our poor start had us just as high in the RPI as when we stopped heading south and started beating on all the Big East and New England opposition. For whatever reason, the computers are impressed that we’re even 4-7 against what they are measuring as the 4th toughest schedule in the country with 100% of our games away from home. And that counts more than being 4-7 and still struggling big time with pitching.

But the bottom line is that we’re fine with RPI. Let’s get the sweep behind Ellison today, and then see if we can come back from the 8 game Carolina trip (after gettting LIU at home) above .500 and ready for the Big East/New England schedule.

Campbell is having a really rough year and LIU is horrible. A 3-1 record should be achievable next week.

We need at least one of Cooke or Van Emon to round into form to win a regional (and both for any dreams of Omaha). We were never as bad as our 1-7 record indicated; we were honestly unlucky considering most of those games were close. Still, the biggest concern from our slow start (starting pitching) has not been assuaged despite the impressive win streak. This is a big game for Tommy.

Ellisen pitches a scoreless bottom of the first, aided by a double play. He’s throwing 92-93 with a nice bite on his slider.

He’s needed just 9 pitches to get out of there.

Ellisen gives up a solo home run, a single, and another single. Runners on corners, no outs, 2-1.

2-2, 1 out and 2 runners on. Ellisen is given a quick hook for Charlie West. Our starting pitching continues to struggle.

Not sure I understand the quick hook for Ellison with the 9 hitter coming up then a righty? Now West has no command and mix in an error.

Ellisen wasn't looking sharp, imo. Getting behind then grooving straight-looking fastballs. I get the move. Just need some arms who can throw strikes with some level of movement and command/control. Example: I miss the Devin Kirby's of yesteryear.

Especially on a Sunday when they need innings and have shown an ability to come back (unless they saw something w/ mechanics).

More walks! Hard to have a winning record when 70% of your pitchers struggle to throw strikes.
Still think only 30 pitches for Ellison is puzzling. These young arms he's brought in since just are struggling to throw strikes. Felt like he could have worked through it and gave us a couple more innings. Oh well, hopefully someone will step up

We have a lot of young lefty pitchers who I'm sure have lots of potential, but they need to gain some control. They are all over the place. Again, just feel like Penders with the quick hook. Although I think Miami has struggled with our lefties in the first 2 games. Guys today just don't have the control

Teaching control is very difficult. Oversimplifying a bit, but in many cases, you either have it or you don't. It comes down to recruiting.
