Well by that line of reasoning, the 3 time hoops program should have been enough to get us into a better conference than we are in now, but...what the hell happened? Like it or not, football does matter. It matters a lot. In the absence of success in football, you guys are right: thank god for JC/Geno and our hoops program.

Looks like we have 2 types of fans on the BY. Sport specific and fans of the school. I like to think I am the latter. I would rather watch UConn polo NC game than LSU v Alabama football or Duke v Kentucky hoops. But that's me.

I think the issue is about both programs were playing on the same day. Sorry the rent experience sucks for me. So because it sucks for me it makes me less of a fan. Horseshit. It makes you a different type of fan, not better.

Sorry I wouldn't rather watch a uconn softball game than having tickets to Texas/Oklahoma or Alabama/Tennessee football game.

Nope. If you are a fan of a school, you don't abandon them because you don't like the style of product or because they are not successful enough. Consumers get to do that. Fans don't.

Nah. I didn't "abandon" anything. That would imply that I jumped off the bandwagon and rooted for some more successful school. As I've said several times, I didn't do that. I'm happy when UConn football wins but I don't go out of my way to watch. I don't root for ND or Florida or some other school because they're more successful. Some of you guys just like to get your panties twisted over anything that offends your notion of fandom. I would hope you're at every UConn field hockey game or else you're nothing but a consumer. Spare me.

I'm not being hostile towards football. I'm being hostile towards a poster without a clue. I'm not a fan of the football team; have never been into college football, but I truly hope the team does well. I just laugh when someone suggests that the program is going to be the reason we get into a major conference. I said the program hasn't accomplished anything; it's unfair for me to suggest the BCS bid was nothing, because it was a meaningful accomplishment. But it doesn't make the football program desirable. I would compare it to a team making the Sweet 16 in basketball; nothing to sneeze at, but one successful year doesn't do much to change peoples' minds about the school.

I know football will be the main factor in determining where we end up. But UConn's football program isn't the reason for that. So the whole comment that basketball somehow owes football if we get into a good conference is absurd to me.

Well since we are having the conversation it does annoy me that there are UConn basketball fans who look down their noses at the football program and act as if it's not worth their time.

Does it similarly annoy you that there are UConn fans who don't follow the women's team, or the track team, or the club lacrosse team? I would hope so because if not your argument is just butt-hurt nonsense.

No need to be sorry. I also agree that I am not a better fan, that was not the point. I am as you say different. As for the issue of the same day games, easy call for me: I live a bit closer to the Barclay's Center, so that settles that. But believe me, I will keep close tabs on the football game.

BTW, my comments about UConn polo vs SEC football assumed watching it on TV. Having tickets to a live SEC game, is another matter.

LOL, speaking of pipedreams, have fun with the Rent "rocking" when Louisville comes to town. It certainly will be rocking when Michigan comes in, but that's only because their fans are going to jam the stadium to the point where they added a few thousand extra seats.

You wonder why basketball fans look down on the football program? It's because of the idiotic football fan that makes ridiculous statements about how the football program will save the basketball program. Are you seriously that dense?

And let's hope whatever conference we end up in doesn't invite us based on our football program. That would be like a conference inviting Providence based on their basketball program.

To any football fan who reads the above and gets offended, I'm sorry. I don't root against UConn football; in fact, I like seeing them do well, and I hope they win this new conference the next 5 years. But they haven't accomplished anything yet, and when someone suggests that they are going to "save" our three-time national championship basketball program, it makes zero sense to me.

whaler is right on this. you're missing the big picture

BINGO. When the womens cbb posts come up where are these fanboys at criticizing people who don't enjoy watching the women's game as being "hostile" or "having disdain" for the program? Nobody hates the football program, people simply just don't enjoy the product on the field.

Except womens basketball doesn't matter at all.

Buying UConn football tickets and going to the games does matter

The only thing we have control of as fans is being a good consumer of the football product.

If it's not your "style" or whatever excuse you can say, so be it.

Just don't be shocked when in ten years were still playing Central Florida in basketball, because at UConn were only allowed to support one team and everything becomes a competition between the fanvases.

I mean, you realize that however many "basketball only" fans in the state would show up to football to sell the place out, how better that would look?

If you want acc or big 10 hoops, the only thing you can do is to continue to.support basketball and begin to embrace football.

Yea I'm not going back and forth on this anymore and engaging in silly riff raff when you want to talk about people coming up with pu**y excuses, getting all riled up like a child. Go sit your meathead ass down somewhere with that son.

One is close and the tickets will be sold with the season tickets. The other is a separate purchase and is travel to Brooklyn.

It's unfortunate but that won't be a huge game from a basketball standpoint. It's not like NCSU was jammed and that was the Garden not against a home football game.
For what it's worth, for those of us west of CT, it's not a bad drive - just a few miles past the Holland tunnel.

I don't get the BB-only fans that have turned this into a we/they issue. It seems that their minds can't grasp the fact that there are thousands of BB fans that have FB season tickets and will be at The Rent. Many of of whom are probably like me and would have made the trip to Brooklyn if it wasn't on the same day.

Lol, you are a clown. You should apply for boneyard tough guy #2 behind south Tampa Bill.

It's morons like you that will bitch and moan about our predicament and point to our 3 titles in hoops and wonder why we're not in a better conference when it's staring at you right in the face.

If we are rescued it will be because our football program improves on the field and we start to full the stands.

So, make the call, support UConn football or get used to the style of mid major hoops.

We have one side saying they root for the FB program to do well but they just aren't a fan of watching them play and the product on the field, then we have the other saying whoever isn't showing up to games and/or not watching a team that can't complete a pass down the field is pu**y and a moron. Which side is creating the division?

uconn football has to get better than 3 * recruits, and win at a higher rate. Fans don't do that. anyway ill probably be in bk watching a title contender, mid major or not.

The recruiting is fine. Please, let's not start this again. Look at Boise and West Virginia's recruiting. UConn had 4 kids with combine invites. Top 5 in the country. Blew away all this, "Where's the talent" talk. It's on the UConn coaches, they are underperforming.

Nice sidestep of my point. I don't read the FB board so maybe getting loose with one's keyboard and calling someone a pu**y is common place over there, I just don't get down with the internet big boy routine.

The fact people complain that both games are on the same day is so ridiculous. What are we a high school? There is no reason for both stadiums not to be full of UConn fans, were not some rinky dink school with 10k fans. For those of you who want to go to both, get over it.

That Friday has become opening night for basketball, were playing a major conference team in an NBA arena in a HUGE recruiting area for us. If Warde said no to that game because our football team was playing he should be fired on the spot.

I think its a joke were playing a football game on Friday night, that is for high schools and WAC teams. But since we are, this is the risk you run. No reason for our basketball program to pass up an opportunity to be on the big stage so a few thousand people can be happy and go to both.

Sidestep? I addressed your question head-on.

And I know from experience that you are pretty quick with the personal attacks on those who don't share your views so pardon me if I take your umbrage at the word "pu**y" with a grain of salt.

Personally, I played for the United States Air Force Academy in football, that's my team through & through. I'll cheer on the Huskies if I happen to scroll by a game on TV, but my team for college football is Air Force, hands down.

Does that make me a bad (or fake) UConn Bball fan?.......No it does not
So ease off the posters here, who get bored at the sight of UConn football & choose not to spend a Sat. at the Rent, or stay in the football forum, we talk bball here

A few comments on some stuff in this thread:

1. Style of play IS alienating casual fans.

2. I know southern school tailgating well. Tailgating at the Rent is good, it is not a weakness and casual fans would like it.

3. Caring about basketball and not football is normal at UConn. Very few people cared about football before the upgrade.

4. Those of you that don't care about football should try to get into it for the sake of the school and the basketball program. It is good for UConn to have a bigtime football program and frankly, football is a great spectator sport. UConn's upgrade is the sole reason that I am now an avid college football fan. I can't say I really liked college football 10 years ago.

I'm trying to stay out of this conversation because you and your brethren are clueless but if those other sports mattered in the realm of conference realignment yes it would annoy me.

Growing up, there was no UConn football. My dad grew up Catholic, and so he was a Notre Dame fan. By the early 00s, he hated Notre Dame because of how they were screwing the Big East, and he had moved over to being a football fan.

I never particularly loved Notre Dame. I've tried to get into UConn football. I watched them beat USF in 2011 (?) and then watched the Fiesta Bowl. I even watched the Louisville game this year.

But, not growing up in a house fanatical about it (as my dad was about UConn basketball), it's hard to be really invested. Being a fan is a huge investment, and there has to be some emotional connection--and the football team hasn't done it for me yet. They weren't bringing in great teams. They weren't playing well. I'm not sure what it's going to take for me to care more than casually, but hosting good teams and winning some games would probably help. Or at least play an exciting style.
