Didn't the ACC just poach SMU and STANFORD from the AAC and the PAC 12 and neither are anywhere near the east coast. Neither are wht I'd call football or basketball powers. My spider senses detect some funny business on BCs part
It's a bit silly, but these big national conferences are now preferred by the great Oz of Television. With one conference the networks can get a national footprint of schools, and offer games from all time zones in football.
Noon, 4pm, 7pm and 10pm for FOOTBALL on Saturday with one contract.
Ironically, no one poached SMU, Stanford and Cal. It was more like an unexpected fire sale. When PAC shockingly imploded, the Big10 did not want Cal&Stanford. The ACC basically bailed them out.
In the SMU case, some billionaire donors actually bought their way into ACC by paying an entrance fee, and not taking any annual ACC payouts for 9-12 years!
The SMU football donors realized the necessity to quickly get into a power conference, or risk being left out forever in the game of musical chairs. They put a football specific fund of donor money together of $150 million just to cover the cost of entry into ACC.
A school willing to pay to get in moves up the candidate list vs a school looking to get a fair share payout. They also brought Dallas/FW TV market.
UConn really should finally get in with next round of realignment. Basketball and Olympic Sports a crown jewel, improved football, and the Hartford/Boston/NYC media market. Just not sure which league it will be.
