Most interesting thing in this interview to me was Coach Penders talking about Saturday starter Joe Simeone. Penders said he got a chance to watch Simeone's bullpen pre start session yesterday. Said Simeone's stuff is really electric in the bullpen. If he allows himself to breathe and relax while pitching in an actual game, he could get very good results. He's too good to have the results he's had in games this year. His slider has been great in rehearsal so to speak, but he needs to bring it with him when the curtain goes up on the actual game. Well, all I can say is, we're waiting.

Good friday win, but it really should have been a 6-0 win.

The first run was created on what should have been ruled an error on Chris Winkel plus two wild pitches. The other three were the result of a bad sequence where Casparius went from 0-2 on SJUs Nate Thomas and failing to put him away after shaking off coach Mac multiple times on multiple pitches. Thomas then put the ball in play, Kyler misplays it and three runs come in.

One other thing Coach Penders mentioned during the post game interview was how UConn hasn't been able to get any separation from their opponents in games this season. Of course, this is hard to do when you end up losing half your games to the tough opponents UConn has played so far this season. Aside from that, the real importance to me in getting some separation in games is allowing less experienced guys who are lower on the bullpen totem pole to be able to come into games and be able to get their feet on the mound without it necessarily being a high stress situation with the game on the line. In this way a pitcher is able to get their feet wet and possibly enjoy some success in a less pressurized situation before graduating to tougher assignments, so to speak.

Hoping Chris Jones at some point this weekend has a chance to talk about the UConn injury brigade of players. Given that he is doing real bare bones broadcasting this weekend with no real statistical support, he may just stick to the game in front of him.

Top 3rd, Devenney with a one out bloop of a double. but he's stranded on base. UConn offense not doing much of anything in the first three innings. 1-0 Hawks.

He didn't say whose gotta get something going, in this case it was the Hawks.

Simeone does strand the runner at 2nd, he now has 4 strikeouts. Hawks lead 2-0 going to the top of the 4th.

It’s not like Simeone has put us in an insurmountable hole. The offense needs to wake up.

Top 4th, first two UConn batters reach base, UConn gets the bases loaded with one out. Stock with a sac fly to drive in a run. 2-1 Hawks with 2 out and runners at the corners. Chris Winkel pops up to end the inning. Bottom third of the order today is pretty anemic right now, the top part of the lineup for UConn really needs to produce to make up for it.

Those are the innings that frustrate penders. Bases loaded one out and they manage a sac fly. Need to start stringing together hits in those situations not just a sac fly and allowing them to keep lead.

Oh and when Sim has that slider working man is it nasty. You get a whole new appreciation for that pitch with this behind the ump view
