UConn @ St John for 3 (Fri. 3/16@3p, Sat. 3/17@1p & Sun. 3/18@1p)

Schedule change:

Chris Jones during the Coastal Carolina game was talking about possibly adding a fourth game to this series due to both teams having lost previous games to weather. However, considering the highest temperature that is forecast during the three game series is 47 degrees, I can understand if they decide to go against having a doubleheader on one of those days.

With St. John's now having a turf field and UConn soon to have one in a couple of years, it certainly makes sense to see the two teams play on a more regular basis. Especially since year in and year out these two teams are probably the two best baseball squads in the northeast and only a short distance away from each other.

Haven’t seen line-up posted but walk and Susi RBI single gives UConn an early 1-0 lead in T1

Cate really struggling this year. Doesn't have good command. Seems to be throwing mostly off speed. Wish he would throw the fast bal a little more.

Stolen base and single to right tie it up for St John’s. A double off the rightfield wall put Johnnie’s ahead 3-1. Cate not off to a good start.

Cates really doesn’t look like his “old self”...
He looks like he has no confidence in his fastball right now. Maybe it’s the cold, but he has no command of it. He’s a one-pitch pitcher right now and St John’s is sitting curveball adjusting to the fastball. I’m no lip reader but I’d bet that what Penders was telling him.

The offense is not helping Cate either. They need to work some counts.

This is like watching the football team give up a 20-yard run on 3rd and 18....

Unfortunately that seems to be something we don't do well. I think our philosophy over the years is swing early and often.

Cate gives two runs right back....ugly start from Cate again...

For now the game goes off the TV for Tourney and onto to the WHUS audio (watching is making my eyes hurt)...

8-3 after 4

I don’t disagree with the philosophy of being aggressive early in the count. But when your pitcher is struggling you have to change the tempo of the game offensively to give him a chance to regroup and catch his breath.

Hate to say it, but Cate needs to come out of this one. I know there is value in preserving the bullpen for the rest of this series, but enough is enough.

St. John's pitcher was on the same summer team as Cate, the national team. No doubt that is having an affect on UConn bats.

Cate gets a scoreless 5th inning with the help of Susi throwing out a stolen base attempt. Cate is also up to 96 pitches, so I can't imagine he will last more than an inning more.

Cate walks one but he’s erased by Susi trying to steal (looked to be a missed hit-n-run sign by the batter after watching the replay). Cate faced the minimum, still 8-3.

Huskies strand runners on 2nd and 3rd, still 8-3 SJ. Dunlop on the hill.

Bottom 6th, Tim Cate comes out and the freshman Colby Dunlop in to pitch.
