Clutch hits are certainly nice, but I would not underestimate the value of a hitter putting the ball in play. Even if you don't get a hit, there is a value to advance runners on base and potentially score them. As long as you are not hitting into double plays, there is a value to this. It also gives the fielders a chance to make a mistake, which does happen from time to time in college ball, and even minor league ball (god knows, I've seen plenty of minor league games in Norwich). When a team is striking out about 15 times a game as UConn has been doing, putting the ball into play simply goes out the window. A strikeout does not put any pressure on the defense to make a play in the field.
