UConn RPI is now at 46 after the loss to Seton Hall. Still in 1st place in the Big East standings.

Bottom 1st, Cooke has a scoreless inning after a 2 out single, the base runner is thrown out trying to steal 2B by Garbowski for the final out of the inning, so Cooke faces the minimum number of batters that inning. No score.

Bottom 2nd, Cooke has 2 strikeouts during a 1-2-3 inning, no score. Cooke has 3 strikeouts for the game so far.

.-.
Bottom 3rd, after a leadoff single, Cooke gets the next 3 outs for a scoreless inning. 1-0 UConn.

Bottom 4th, Cooke retires the side in order, he now has 5 strikeouts for the game. 1-0 UConn. Cooke has thrown 50 pitches so far.

Top 5th, with a leadoff walk and a 1 out single, the UConn offense has runners on the corners. Minick follows with another RBI double with 1 out driving in a run, 2-0 UConn.

With 2 out, Tammaro is hit by a pitch to load the bases, but that is it for the UConn offense that inning.

Top 8th, with 1 out, the UConn offense gets 2 runners on base. Studley gets a 2 out RBI single, 4-0 UConn.

Top 9th, with 2 out, Morton has an RBI single driving in Tammaro who had reached base on an infield single earlier in the inning, Morton is thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a double. 5-0 UConn.

Bottom 9th, after Cooke gets the first 2 outs, a 2 out single and 2 walks load the bases. A 2 out single drives in 2 runs, 5-2 UConn. Runners are at the corners. Cooke comes out of the game, Afthim takes the mound. Cooke had a terrific game.

Afthim gets the final out, UConn wins the game 5-2. UConn splits the doubleheader, and takes the series over Seton Hall.

Ahh, this is a nice surprise after a long ride from New Hampshire. Too bad the bats failed them in game two. Some excellent pitching this weekend. Could have been a sweep with 2-3 timely hits.

Not for nothing, but Seton Hall’s pitchers had a decent weekend as well.

Seton Hall is a good pitching team. It's a poor hitting team. I won't knock a team for winning 2 of 3 on the road, but it still seems like our pitchers look much improved when facing poor hitters, and our hitters look much improved when facing poor pitchers, but ....

While we can't expect to win every game, the loss did hurt. Our RPI (which dropped like a stone while we were winning 7 out of 8 because of OOC losses by Big East teams and our OOC opponents largely struggling) as of now would clearly have us on the outside looking in (if we don't win the auto bid), and the Johnnies cut our conference lead to one game with six to play.

The next 9 days will be different, with five straight games against quality opponents, two on the road. We'll know a lot, lot more about this club when they are returning from Cincy.

And don’t forget the trip to Butler following Cincy…last series for Butler, last place, no postseason and probably no fans and the added expectation that you should win all 3 games, is always a problem and never easy. The next 2 weeks are the season. If they can win out, the BE tournament may be a tournament they wanna win but don’t need to in order to play in June.
