UConn President: Fall sports likely to be cancelled

Who made that statement?

It was addressed as a possibility, which is what the people in administrations are paid to plan for. Not planning for that possibility would be reckless.
Not planning for it and stating it publicly are two very different things. I just looked quick so if I’m misinformed my bad but I thought the president stated that publicly in a video lecture If so my b. That goes for the mayor of LA Garcetti too- why even say anything about sports 6 months away ? for what purpose?

In her case, I'll take that risk. Maybe even from closer range.

If you are going to be quarantined, I can think of worse people to be stuck with than Maria Sharapova.

.-.
Well per the CDC Director if covid 19 comes back in the fall and winter it is likely to be harsher than this round because it could coincide with the flu. If they hit simultaneously the current situation in NY would look like a walk in the park.

Duh, it wouldn't be coming back because it's not leaving. I don't understand what we're doing.

Why even bring it up in mid April? It’s sensationalism and fear mongering at this point, even if it turns out to be true. Almost every data point has grossly over estimated the impact of the virus, with social distancing incorporated. Why continue to act like we know how things are going to play out 5 months from now? It’s infuriating.

If they let students fill the campus in the fall. How do they justify canceling sports?

And you know they want to open on time in the fall because they want their salaries.

Exactly the point I was trying to make. Don’t say you don’t think we’ll have fall sports when you can’t tell what will happen next week.

An interesting fact I heard on the TV, in the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic NYC had 30,000 deaths in a situation that lasted for 2 flu seasons. Right now after 5 weeks they are closing in on 15,000 deaths.
If sports are going to be played in the fall that means students will be back in dorms on campus. First for that to happen we will have to see a large number of States with declining numbers of new covid-19 infections for 2 weeks as per the Federal guidelines.
Next we would need to see people getting back on airplanes which means dealing with airports and all the crowding that goes on there before you put your athletic teams on planes.
If colleges are playing sports then the pro leagues will be back as well. Quite a bit to be determined yet to say the least.

Basketball is a winter sport, correct? And the big question is, would they allow sports to be played if students aren’t even on campus?

These people are going crazy. Take it weeks in the future, not months. How many more besides me will lose their jobs with these overreactions? Everything I've read shows deaths in CT will end by 6/1. Why cancel Fall? It makes no sense. At some point, we need to live. Outdoor sports can easily social distance.

It occurs to me that many on this board are acting as if talking about the possibility of sports seasons being canceled increases the likelihood of it happening. To be clear, I mean talking about it amongst ourselves on the Boneyard, not school officials talking about it publicly.

Gone for good by 6/1? You need to read from more accurate sources then.

I get all the people saying we need to wait, but this decision is going to be made a lot sooner than everyone here is suggesting. You can't wait until July or August to make this decision

Right but you don't need to bring up those plans publicly right now.

Is this really a big surprise? Does anybody think that in 120 days time we are going to have kids staying in dorms? The wave in the fall is increasingly looking worse than this one.

Thats his job. It’s every leaders job.
He wasn’t predicting, he was reporting.
Sorry to disagree. Reporting is supposedly stating the facts. He was speculating. Anyone in the public eye ( other than politicians) has to be sensitive in sticking to the facts rather than guessing which is what he did.
I would submit that every model that the “experts” have published has been wrong by significant amounts. We really don't know.
let me speculate. As I type this I see on tv, a model that says this peaks within the next week. I also read of testing individuals daily. Ok. How about a scenario that every player, coach and ref is tested daily. No fans, but the games are televised. The colleges rake in significant broadcasting revenues and cut their losses.
we have to start looking at The economic future of our state and country. Our politicians love to give away other people’s money ( please re read The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire). A trillion$ here and a trillion $ there can drive us into a depression.
I’m not saying we should go out in crowds right now. I am saying we can’t ignore the economic facts. There must be some balance.

I believe Fauci estimated 40k-150k deaths in the US. We are currently north of 40k. If he is wrong by a significant amount it will be pretty bad news. Let’s hope he’s right.

Let’s hope we are the lucky ones standing after 6/1
