@Sifaka, thanks for posting this AP article, but I believe there’s a small error in the reporter’s story, found in the paragraph below:

“Bueckers — who led UConn to last year’s Final Four, where it lost to eventual champion South Carolina — came out after the break and made clear her collegiate career would continue, scoring eight points early in the third quarter to put the Huskies ahead.”

I am depending on my memory here, and I know they UConn lost to Caitlyn Clark’s Iowa team. They were penalized for moving screen by Aaliyah Edwards, during the very last seconds of the game, and Paige had the ball in her hands to shoot.
Problem is Paige was passive and only scored 4 points the entire 4th quarter while CC scored 8 to give Iowa the win

I don't know if anyone else recalls but when she was recruited Geno really oversold her. With a lot of words he essentially said she's amazing. That did her no favors. There are times I just have to shake my head at Geno.
She is a freshman post coming back from an achilles tear! I’m betting she will still live up to that description. Sure, she has not done so yet but very few posts do as a freshman, especially coming back from having to sit out a year. Let’s see how she looks next season. Meanwhile, star or not, Jana did an effective job on helping to shut down the most dangerous player on that team! I do agree he did her no favors with that description.

Jana played Beers really well and they'll need her to play the same against Marshall or Iriafen otherwise Sara could get into foul trouble.
It seems like Jana doesn't have good hand strength but she uses her body well

Yeah, and nothing good will ever come from it if they follow that advice! How about we give her some credit for her effort against Beers and some understanding that posts take a little longer to develop? She is still essentially a freshman and will, I predict, make you change your tune in the coming three years!
I hope she develops into the player that she can be. But the time for to her improve her game is at practice, not in games. If she catches the ball, big IF, she just throws the ball in the general direction of the hoop, with not much of chance to go in. The ball seems to have the effect of a taser on her, as she drops it and flops all around.

UConn won. ND lost. Tenn lost. I call that a really good day!
Under woulda/coulda/shoulda, that would have been the ultimate irony. Had KSU pulled the upset, all three teams that beat UConn this season would have been eliminated in one day. Still, two were knocked out, and the third showed it is eminently beatable. Add in the revenge factor, and I think Geno will have his crew ready for the Trojans tomorrow night.

Wow! Vegas just posted the opening line for UCONN/ USC.
Believe it or not, the Huskies are favored by 13.5 points!
That is a lot of points even though Juju is out.
I thought the announcers last night were putting lipstick on a pig. The USC/KSU game was close for most of it, but I wasn't impressed with either team. I kept thinking UConn could handle either one of them. I'm glad it's USC. Our players have been itching for an opportunity to take back that home loss in December. They should be ready.

Never been there.

Personally, I’m more interested in seeing the game than try reading what someone else thinks is happening. :)
These days, there is so much stoppage time during the game. It gives us plenty of time to read comments on social media or the caustic chatroom.

They obviously don't win last night without Paige, but outrebounding OU was a big key as well. Limited their possessions and second chance point opportunities. That was a big part of the win.
Not obvious to me

Jana showed in this game that she can defend a tough big. She still needs to keep the ball high so the little ones can't take it away from her though. The offense made a lot of good decisions in the second half and Paige hit all of her shots. I really don't see this team losing unless they really just have a horrible game and foul trouble.

I usaully despise Dee Kantner's style of officiating. It seems like she has her own rule book.
But today, she allowed hard contact & that enabled UCONN to ramp up their stifling defense.
You knew it was going to be a rough game when Beers plowed into Paige on her 3pt shot and the foul wasn't called.

But remember that was before her terrible injury, which took away a full year of practice and IMHO is still hindering her skills. I look for her to make a big step forward next year.

Jana only played 12 minutes so the narrative that she shutdown Beers is not very accurate
In those 12 minutes she had 9 rebounds which
Was fantastic had 3 fouls missed all 3 shot’s including a layup missed both foul shots and
Had trouble holding onto the ball
It’s fair to say that she played very hard put a big body on Beers and helped the team win
She hadn't eaten or drank anything since sunrise, so the body isn't fueled up like the rest of the team. Why don't you go half a day and then go out and play a physical game and see how well you perform.

Just noticed that ESPN's Creme going into the 8 continues to rank our Huskies No. 1.

"The Huskies have won their three NCAA tournament games by an average of 42 points and easily retain the top spot in the rankings heading to the Elite Eight."

This from a guy largely impervious to UConn's charms during much of the season. But credit to him for coming around. Incidentally he has USC as 7 in the line up and JuJu's ACL had to have had a profound impact there.

Am I the only one who thinks this is a nothing burger? She answered the press's questions in a professional manner. She was very complimentary of Paige. She was emotional in talking about how proud she was of her team. So what that she didn't give an "opening statement"?
To start, I'm bias about Paige. I was not so much influenced about
the Sooner's H.C. not making an "opening statement" as her response
to the reporter's question about (and I'm paraphrasing here): Q: "What did
you think about your options when Paige Buecker turned on her "HEATER"?
I expected, in my biased viewpoint, some thoughtful and H.C. analysis about
Paige's performance. What I thought I heard was: A: "You know she's so
good...she's really good....". I (biased that I am) thought she could be
more generous to the ALL American who just TORCHED her Sooners out
of the TOURNAMENT! The Sooners played off Paige on some of her
made three pointers (mistake!), and the Sooners never made any adjustments (that I could see) to the "top of the key" screens that freed up Paige for
one intermediate jumper after another, after another, after another!
It was (during the game) that I thought this (remember, I'm no coach). Paige was
great, the SOONER's defensive strategy (IMHO) was open to
question (which was what the interviewer/reporter was asking, no?).
Maybe the coaches and players were just tired of hearing Paige's
shots swish through the net cords? End of my rant... I'm just a little sorry for it.
GO PAIGE, GO SARAH, GO AZZI, GO ASH... tickle the cords: again, and again!

The question was about how her team recalibrates when a player like Paige goes on a heater. She was more than complimentary but the question wasn't about Paige, it was about her team and how they reacted.

Jana has come a long way in her first year playing US college basketball and that was demonstrated on Saturday against OU. She played solid defense, she had 9 rebounds in only 12 minutes and she set great screens near the free-throw area to get Paige open looks. Basketball isn’t always about scoring - it’s just as important to do the little things. I’m confident Jana’s scoring will improve tremendously with time.

I'm watching the Oklahoma replay and guess what...when Paige made her first three and was run over by Beers, guess who the trailing ref was signaling the three was good? Dee Kantner who was on the same sideline just feet behind Paige. Of course Geno was yelling at the ref that had been under the basket for the shot, as she ran down the court trailing the players.
