UConn officially in Fenway Bowl v UNC

-> So the American was agreeable to Fenway folk inviting a viable New England independent, and it’s paying off. Tickets sales, as of Friday, were said to be nearing 18,000, already exceeding the previous Fenway Bowls, played in 2022, when Louisville and Cincinnati drew 15,000, and ’23, when BC and SMU drew 16,200.

One drawback? Christmas becomes a working holiday. UConn will travel to Boston on Dec. 24, with “media day” at Fenway the 27th, the day before the game, which is a departure from a usual game-week routine.

“It lays out well for us, actually,” Huskies coach Jim Mora said. “What we will do is make it make it as family friendly as possible. Morning practice (on Christmas Eve), have a meal, have some meetings, have a chapel and a mass, a social with the parents.

“Then on Christmas day, we’ll practice in the morning, some community events, and then a holiday celebration dinner. We’re going to make it special for these kids and their families. My concern is for these kids having a great experience at the bowl, and the families still feeling like they can celebrate the holidays together.” <-

Can’t help but think we were one year too late. Would we be in the Big 12 if we went 8-4 last year and filling up Fenway Park? Along with basketball back-to-back?

Thank you coach Mora for having Mass and Chapel.

I am out of free stories. How DID UConn land the Fenway bid?
From Dom Amore @ Courant today:

-> There was some wheeling and dealing among conferences and bowls to put UConn in The Fens. The American Conference is a primary partner for the Fenway Bowl, but league champ Army was tied to the Independence Bowl. Other conference teams preferred closer, warmer options. For instance, many had UConn going to Tampa to play Florida, but Tulane, the AAC runner up, went there.

Based on looking at the tickets available yesterday - i would think tickets sales appear very brisk - my group got shut out of buying 12 in 2 groups close to one another, as the section filled up. There were NO sub $100 tickets available after we bought 7, and i had to wait until this morning to buy 6 more - 2 sections away.

Not sure how losing two key O players on our side to the portal affects our chances. I hate this instability for all teams. It’s just not right. Wait to after bowl season at least.

OK by me.................as long as we acknowledge they are paid athletes.......not "student" athletes.
.

"Roll Skies", never heard that before but I'm now going to use it hard...
Agreed, though I think the apostrophe needs to be added or else it just looks like

I deal with it by being Mr. Positive. Overall, Jim's doing a great job keeping the team together. I think they will be ready for a top effort mentally and physically.

I could be wrong but I think we can use Robinson (transferred here from Charlotte, had a great year which got him a spot on an SEC school) as a selling point to land other talented kids who want to show they belong at a much higher level than (for example) CUSA.

If we bring in two kids a year who knock it out of the park for a season here, then move on, I wouldn't be all that upset.

Keep in mind, it's not like the next conference expansion phase is at some predetermined year or date in the future. If UConn wins the Fenway Bowl with a good raucous crowd that optically makes for good TV viewing, the Big 12 can extend an invite this summer. Do I expect it? No. But it would not surprise me all that much if that did happen.

unc fans can pout all they want, but 2 things I believe are true:

1) no result is worse than losing to a team you claim to be fundamentally "beneath us". If we do win, they will surely do the mental gymnastics to justify and prove that it doesn't matter and was an exhibition with scrubs. I hope the jury of public sports opinion grills them mercilessly if we win, for the attitude they are exhibiting toward us.
2) at least they are not an 11-2 Army playing a 5-win LA Tech in a bowl. There are worse lots being cast for other teams in this bowl season. I can't see anyone on either side caring for that game.
so, UNC - show up for your team, please.

It absolutely is a great selling point to future transfer portal players. Even a branding of "Stepping Stone U" is not a bad thing at all as long as the players using UConn Football as a stepping stone for a bigger time school in the SEC have their personal success aid in the team's success instead of putting up empty stats on a team with a losing record.

Mora and his staff can say to a potential transfer, "I know you have visions of playing in the SEC/Big 10. Let me tell you, we are on TV and are big brand university so if you play well here, those schools will notice. We have a good track record for this. Already Durrell Robinson, Justin Joly (I know ACC), and others have succeeded here. We will give you every chance to succeed if you put in the work here."

Ugh.

I think that's inplicit in today's environment. You sell your program and your culture and your school. If you do well it opens doors. Leave it at that.
