3 former UConn products let go on NFL cut-down day
http://runwayramblings.blogspot.com/2014/08/3-former-uconn-products-let-go-on-nfl.html

"The news that Yawin Smallwood, also a seventh-round selection in this year's draft, was cut actually came out yesterday. Fellow linebacker Lawrence Wilson was waived by St. Louis while receiver Nick Williams was let go by Washington. Williams was tied for third on the team with six receptions and had two of the team's eight TD receptions during the preseason. I would say that of the trio, he would seem like the most likely to get picked up by another team."

"The biggest news could be that rookie Shamar Stephen beat out veteran Minnesota Vikings defensive lineman Fred Evans for a roster spot. Evans has been with the Vikings since 2007 recording 97 tackles and three sacks. Stephen, a seventh-round pick, finished as Minnesota's fourth-leading tackler during the preseason with 12 stops."

Consider this your Boneyard annual Practice Squad Refresher Trainer.

High reward, high risk work, but the pay is good even if the job security isn't as good. Still beats the heck out of college grads working at Starbucks.

http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2014/8/29/6077941/nfl-practice-squad-rules-eligibility-salary-deadline

The minimum a practice-squad player can make is $6,300 per week. Of course, a team can and will pay more if a player is in high demand and has other offers elsewhere. However, none of their contract is guaranteed.

In short, a team can decide to cut a practice squad player without any penalty.

If a player is signed to another team and put on the active roster, they will receive a minimum of three checks regardless of whether they are kept for that entire time.

Should a player stay on the practice squad for the entire season, he stands to earn $107,100. In comparison, a player who is on the active roster and making the minimum will take in $420,000.

Under the current collective bargaining agreement, the salary for a practice-squad player will go up each year through 2020. Increases of $300 per week will be made until the year 2018, when $400 will be added to the previous year's salary. By 2020, the number is set at $8,400 per week.

Report: ESPN's Mel Kiper puts former #UConn DT Shamar Stephen on the projected All-Rookie squad dailynorseman.com/2014/9/3/61021…

>>The Minnesota Vikings have a couple of highly heralded rookies taking their first NFL steps this off-season in linebacker Anthony Barr and quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. However, in his projected all-rookie team that was released today, Mel Kiper. . .dramatic pause. . .Draft Expert placed one Viking on the squad, and it wasn't either of the team's first-round choices. Instead, he tabbed defensive tackle Shamar Stephen, the first of the Vikings' three seventh-round picks this past May, as one of the two defensive tackles on the team, along with St. Louis Rams rookie Aaron Donald.<<

I doubt many of us expected Robert McClain to be making $1.4M a year in the NFL which is his salary this year with the Falcons.

Love rooting for the all the Huskies in the NFL, especially the McClain's and Lansanah's who worked their tails off, go cut, bounced around on some practice squads and earned every second of playing time and dollars on their contract.

Sticking in the NFL beyond the first contract is combination of several factors, some players can control, others they can't control. Determination and perserverance are two they have complete control over.

Tyvon Branch had a big sack too.

And that one should have been Sio's too. He was about to drag Geno Smith down, but the O-lineman basically tackled him from behind (and got flagged). But Branch finished Smith off and, of course, Oakland declined the penalty because it ended up being for a loss of 19 yds. Sio is an absolute stud and it is showing.

@KevinRDuffy: Yawin Smallwood, ex-#UConn LB, worked out for Patriots today, according to @FieldYates.

@JohnFSilver: Speaking of UConn NFL news. Nick Williams was cut today by Redskins. I'm a fan. There got to be room on a roster for him.
