It's not all the fans fault coaches fault or ad fault. Out conference was disbanded when we rejected a 1.2 billion dollar deal I think it was. It was a perfectly good conference and we are a on the fence team.

Energy around our teams dipped before the league died.

It's a trend everywhere, college basketball built such an amazing March that a lot of people don't invest until then.

UConn isn't the only school struggling to get students invested. A little rain and students bail on games because they can't use their phones at a lot of schools. Michigan State's AD talked about that if I remember correctly.

I watch UConn's non-conference games out of a sense of obligation. They are generally pointless. They blow out a Vermont or a UMBC... Without a point spread it's just tedious.

"Attendance was better." That means the attendance number was higher in previous years. Nothing more to read into it. As for your other question about attendance and support, yes, I do believe your supposition. Yes, Creighton has great support when it comes to fans showing up at the arena. There's no way to argue that it doesn't. And yes, a small venue can hurt Duke, but hey! Duke isn't selling out the arena these days like they used to, so I'm not sure there's an argument there. Of course, UConn can sell out the arena for the big games too, but for the smaller games? It's like Duke. So: great for Pitt, great for Creighton. Of course, there are other factors, like ticket prices, donations for seats, freebies (heck, Rutgers gives 40% of tix in freebies), etc. But as for attendance, the numbers are what they are. Hard to argue against them.

These are not the only factors of support. There's donations, there's TV ratings, licensing, etc. Hey, there are other sports which might be considered to support the ADs revenues--that too counts.

Of course I agree that attendance, revenue, TV ratings, licensing, donations, all of it should be compared.

"RU gives 40% tickets as freebies"Show us the data!Student tickets are built into tuition! When RU expanded there stadium their was a 13G waiting list for season tickets! Some schools can't get that many to buy a ticket! And thats before OSU,Mich,Wisc and PSU were rolling into town!

I can't believe I've read this entire thread.
After a while I just started scrolling to see upstate - whaler - upstater - somebody else whaler - upstater - whaler without reading the posts.

Seriously what kind of bizarre troll are you? In one recruiting thread UConn is 'us'. In others you argue vehemently for Rutgers.

Rarely can you piece together a sentence. It's just bizarre.

Finally, upstater and you can agree on something!I'm a fan of the B1G,RU and UConn getting into the B1G!Does that help you? When RU plays UConn I'm a RU fan!I hope that's rational enough for you....as for upstater I'm afraid all hope is lost!@ps What kind of troll would be in support of justice for UConn?

@You seem like a smart guy??Why couldn't someone be a fan of one school and support another brother school whose been double crossed by "so called friends"(BC/SU)?

We have enough of our own idiots here (me included). We don't really need a RU fan who can't piece together a coherent thought posting condescending nonsense.

Is Kansas a middling team? Utah? Boise? TCU?

Kansas- middling football program
Utah - two BCS bowl victories...and 8-1 overall in bowl games in the last 10 years.....NOT MIDDLING
Boise - 10 straight bowl appearances (6-4) including two BCS victories - NOT MIDDLING
TCU - Rose Bowl WIN (2010) and another BCS appearance (Fiesta '09) and 6-3 overall Bowl record in the last 1o years. NOT MIDDLING

LOUISVILLE - NOT MIDDLING.

Do you even know what "middling" means?

Kansas has career .497 winning percentage and 1 BCS win (with one of my buddies at linebacker so I'm not a hater). Louisville is a career .510 winning percentage with 1 BCS win. Why is one middling and one NOT MIDDLING in Capitol letters?

@Thanks for your contribution!I'll take it into consideration along with what to make of upstater's rants! Thanks for taking the time to read my incoherent, condescending nonsense and I appreciate the fact you took a shot at yourself as none of us should take ourselves or opinions too seriously! If any of us really had any brains would we expose ourselves to this mob (BY)!!

Its pretty simple. For all intents and purposes UConn sold out the 1992 season. This year they couldn't sell out for Louisville and Syracuse and did things like sell Villanova tickets for $10.

Yet it's better in your demented mind.
How can you use a year in which the team was banned from the post season as a measurement of attendance trends?

Had the trend not already started I wouldn't.

This was husky mania. Its been a long time since we had this atmosphere. I remember being in Gampel during the Donyell era when PC had Mike Smith and Rob Phelps. It was loud in there my hands were buzzing it seemed.

The g town game this past season was pretty loud at Gampel.

I will be honest. I was religious about watching all hoops games before the Rent opened. Especially when our late season games matter and we are bowling I can't hardly pay any attention until January.

Kansas won a BCS bowl.

You said middling teams don't win BCS bowls.

In fact, they won a BCS bowl against the #3 ranked team in the country!

Thank you for proving my point.

Penders’ up-tempo coaching style resulted in unprecedented basketball popularity. In two years, the average attendance at home basketball games was up nearly 150%.It continued to rise, in part because of Penders' tireless promotion of the program at fundraising events across the state. While this increase was substantial, it did not rival the top basketball programs in popularity. That’s why Penders was surprised to hear about the study completed by Emory Sports and Marketing Analytics that ranked the Texas’ fanbase as the sixth best in the nation.

“That’s crazy [laughs]. You know just by comparison UConn’s fan base is much bigger. They would get about fifteen newspapers just to come to watch practice. The whole state would shut down for a Friday night basketball game. They played high school football Saturday mornings, much like Indiana, much like Kentucky. UConn has won more national championships in the last thirteen years than anybody. So I come from a basketball school with an incredible fan base. People would fight over trying to get season tickets and it would be like ‘Okay well you gotta wait for your Uncle Charlie to die.’ You couldn’t get them.”

Penders is surely not aware of the current reality BUT, he does laugh at the Emory guy. As everyone should.

Hey nicky do you talk like you post? I mean shouting and/or ending every sentence with an upward inflection

.-.
I didn't look up 2013 (a season in which APR ban figured in). I'm sure last year is bad. I gave you total attendance and average attendance for all UConn basketball games.

Here are the numbers over 20 years:

1992: 12,963
1993: 12,498
1994: 12,502
1995: 12,996
1996: 12,911
1997: 12,578
1998: 13,007
1999: 13,345
2000: 13,543
2001: 12,543
2002: 13,709
2003: 13,229
2004: 13,549
2005: 13,771
2006: 13,948
2007: 13,012
2008: 11,887
2009: 12,518
2010: 11,685
2011: 11,569
2012: 12,640

These are the total attendance averages, not the cherrypicked numbers. And what they show is that the program has drawn pretty evenly over the last 20 years, an average right between 12,500-13,500 for the most part. In 2008, there was a big dropoff of more than 1,000, and that was the year of the financial downturn.

UConn has been drawing now for 20 odd years, and they've been winning for 20 odd years.

When it comes to Uconn attendance, it was pretty steady and even until 1991. The high water mark was also not in the 1990s but the mid 2000s.

So I looked at 1991 and 2006 and would say they are the two overall peaks although your averages make 2006 look better - but it's really the same here's why:

1991
GP: 8227 avg 8241 capacity 99.8%
HCC: 16233/16294 99.6%

2006
GP sold out 10167 capacity
HCC: 16208/16294 99.5%

The average numbers look higher in 2006 because: Gampel has 1900 extra seats that would have sold and the key piece:

In 1991 Split was 9 GP, 7 HCC
In 2006 Split was 6 GP, 10 HCC

The 2010s have paled in comparison to the 90s and 00s.

Nicky's been awfully quiet since you posted this. Maybe his keyboard is broken and the space-bar doesn't work; oh wait, I don't think he knows where the space-bar is. I thought I'd never say this but his posts are harder to read and understand than HFD's

Believe me, I was scared to post that for that very reason.

As I said, I have no doubt Gampel expansion helps the 2000s. But when you look at the 2 years right after the expansion, there was no difference. The biggest factor, I believe, was the national championship in 1999. They won the NC, and then they got 13k for 7 or 8 years in a row. And now that I just wrote that, I'm starting to think that I meant to write "the first 7 years" and not "the last 7" in that mistaken earlier post.

Funny, its always the Newhouse owned SLer taking shots at RU!Still if you used as much time as you doing looking for negatives anyone can find them!Wheres the link to the 13G waiting list?I bet your not man enough to post that? And whats the projection for the invasion of the B1G?OSU,Mich,Wisc,PSU ?All rolling into HPS and coming to a town near you soon!Heck, their buying up season tickets already to insure they get into 1 game!!Hows that make UConn who don't come to away games or bowls in numbers over the hundreds let alone fill home games look?I mean RU and L'ville led the BE in attendance and thats a fact!Could you give away tickets to the Rent?Spend half the time you do on negatives helping your school with positives!I have a new moniker for you....Mr Negativity...spends countless hrs scouring rags for backup to endless arguments!Keep up the good work and you might earn respect at least for perseverance!People can find something to justify anything if you look hard enough and when do you have time for anything but the BY?btw, thanks for the info!
