Easy 1-2-3 inning for Montgomerie in the 5th. Good for him, as I suspect if there was any trouble for him he would have been taken out.

Montgomerie has retired 9 in a row after sounding like he was coming apart at the seems at the beginning of the 4th inning.

Make it 12 in a row for Montgomerie as he cruises through the 7th. He also now has 6 strikeouts. 3-2 East Carolina as UConn comes to bat in the 8th.

UConn puts up a threat in the 9th, but don't score. ECU wins 3-2. Oh well, it would have been interesting to see either Darras or Poulin play the field in place of Hill if UConn had tied it up.

Damn. Another 1 run loss with not enough offense...

That's what it comes down to. Pitching was certainly good enough, but just not enough runs on the offensive side of things.

Wills Montgomerie is the one positive to take out of this game. Wills struggled a bit early in the game, and then all signs were pointing to a classic Montgomerie flame out of totally losing his cool when he started the 4th inning with a hit by pitch, a home run, then another hit by pitch. At that point I didn't think Wills was going to last much longer. The bullpen was warming up, and probably one more runner on base reaching base on him would have had him heading towards the bench. To his credit, Wills regained his composure and retired the next 12 hitters, and I believe he set a personal record by going 7 innings. Since in the past Montgomerie doesn't usually regain his composure, that is a big thing and a good sign of progress by him.

He really did and has. If he can get by without surrendering hbp...he is gonna be a dependable and solid weekend starter even heading into next year. He is not giving up a lot of hits but walks and Plunking batters comes back to bite him. Pitched a heck of a game today just need something out of 2-5 hitters that Uconn did not get today.

Focus turns to holy cross - hopefully mid week crew can nail down another northeast win.

Any word on whether Rossomando is on the mend? I'd feel a lot better if we didn't have to trot out a roulette wheel of relievers against HC.

If he has an oblique muscle issue as reported... I can't see him pitching this week but haven't seen/heard official update.

I haven't heard anything either. However, I have an odd feeling that Zapata will get the Holy Cross start. No reason to think this, other than he was throwing in the bullpen late in today's game. Both Penders and Chris Jones have both said that he really has never done well coming in to a game as a reliever, so I'm thinking he may have been getting some work in as prep for the midweek game.
