Finn.
Why not true him? He's shown he can get people out on a good day. And we only have two pitchers on the staff who have shown they can struggle through bad days without getting absolutely destroyed.

Well, the UConn women's basketball championship game is around 3pm, so I hope to be doing my game posting until that time.

Finn has generally done well in his starts, but he does not stay in the game all that long in terms of innings. I wonder if Cooke will replace him on the mound when he comes out of the game.

Top 1st, the UConn offense has a scoreless inning after getting a 2 out walk by Daniels. No score.

Funny thing, Chris Jones pretty much said the same thing about Finn at the beginning of his broadcast.

Bottom 1st, after a 2 out walk and a steal of 2B, Finn has a scoreless inning. No score.

Chris Jones mentioning the wrist injury to Maddix Dalena. No time line on when he may be available to play this season.

Top 2nd, a leadoff walk for Root. Biller reaches 1B on a fielders choice ground out. Biller is thrown out trying to steal 2B for the final out of the inning as the UConn offense has a scoreless inning. No score.

Chris Jones saying he expects we will see Ian Cooke coming out of the bullpen today.

Bottom 2nd, with 1 out Finn gives up 2 walks. Finn comes out of the game, Caruso takes the mound with a lefty hitter due up.

Caruso hits the first batter he faces to load the bases. This is followed by a 1 out single that drives in a run, 1-0 Creighton.

A 1 out walk brings in another run, 2-0 Creighton. Caruso comes out of the game. Abbadessa takes the mound.

Abbadessa gives up a single to the first batter he faces which drives in 2 runs with runners on the corners. 4-0 Creighton.

Another single drives in another run, 5-0 Creighton.

Well… it is certainly looking like this won’t be like last year, staging a mid-season comeback. Barring something very unexpected. I’m okay with it, you can’t expect to be great every year. Still incredibly impressed with Penders’ overall body of work and hopeful that we can end this year on at least a respectable note.

Abbadessa retires the next 2 batters to finally end the inning. 5-0 Creighton. While Abbadessa gave up a couple of hits, at least he did not walk anyone.

I've mentioned before that I started following UConn baseball closely around the 2010 season. In most seasons that I have followed, the strength of the team has been its starting pitching. Can't say that this season.

The other thing is that in most seasons, the UConn pitching staff has shown some good improvement as the season moves along. That certainly has not happened this season so far with UConn.

We just walk and hit way too many batters. And it's not just our young pitchers, our veterans for whatever reason this year are struggling with it. The Creighton guy already has 4 walks. The lack of control by college pitchers is baffling. The difference this year, is our batters tend to let the other pitcher off the hook when they are struggling with lack of discipline/patience at the plate.

I believe Penders has to thread a tiny needle at this point. He needs to somehow develop pitching from here until season's end while also winning enough BE games to finish in the top three or four in the conference. Our margin for error is down to basically nothing.

Top 3rd, the UConn offense gets 2 walks leading off the inning, a 1 out infield error loads the bases. Minick hits a 2 out grand salami, 5-4 Creighton.

Ian Cooke takes the mound for UConn.
