UConn Baseball Recruiting and Commitment Thread

-> “I spent the whole offseason in the gym getting more mobile and athletic,” Ericson said. “It surprised me, I came in this season throwing even harder than I expected. Last year I was 83-84 and this year I am 85-86, topping at 87. Two to three miles at the beginning of the season, I will take that.” <-

-> Ericson is hopeful he will be able to play both ways at UConn as a pitcher and as either a first baseman or outfielder, which would allow him to keep hitting.

“I have been working on my hitting because they told me when I get there I can hit and pitch,” Ericson said. “If I can get both down in high school, it will be perfect going into college.” <-

With the UConn baseball season now over, it is good time to provide the annual current summery of recruits who have been reported in this thread as having committed to UConn baseball. In the past, summer and fall have been a time when many such commitments are reported both for the upcoming season and future seasons. There is always the possibility of a number of transfers and possibly other recruits who will join UConn baseball for fall ball this September in addition to the recruits already listed.

Norwalk has a 6’3” freshman named Gavin Chakar that’s apparently already touching low-90s. I grew up and played in Norwalk and still keep a good pulse on the baseball community, and there’s something special about this kid (and NHS this year, in general. Hope they can sweep FCIACs and LLs. They have two other pitchers that are also around 85-90 and could be D-I good).

Would hope Penders and co. have already reached out to him. I’ve said over the years that Lower Fairfield County is something of a “white whale” for us, as their very best kids seem to go BC, Vandy, or other ACC/SEC schools. Heck, there’s a kid on Warde who committed to Louisville as a sophomore (I think he’s since decommitted, but still). That area produces so much talent, and we need to ensure we’re getting more than our share of it.

-> The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Righi batted .491 through the regular season with six home runs, 30 runs scored, a .642 on-base percentage, a 1.036 slugging percentage and a 1.678 OPS. He also stole 26 bases on 29 attempts. <-

-> "Cam is the absolutely the best high school baseball player in Connecticut, and I don’t think it’s close," New Britain coach Ryan Tufano said in the release. "He’s one of the best hitters I’ve seen in my almost 15 years of coaching high school baseball. He hits for power, average and has great discipline. He’s truly a force, and his presence changes how you play Wethersfield (High School)."

Righi will play college baseball at UConn this fall. <-
