Correct, and Frank will be 18 later this week so wouldn't hit 21 until after his junior year

Yes, that is how it works for NCAA Division 1 schools and their players. JUCO players have different rules (I think they can leave to go pro after both their freshman and sophomore years), and it may be also be different for schools that aren't in Division 1.

I found this story in the Athletic about the rivalry between Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer. Cole could have signed out of high school being drafted number 28, but chose to pitch for UCLA. It would be nice if Frank followed this route.

Excerpt from article.

When Cole showed up to UCLA workouts in the summer before his freshman year in 2008, even those who didn’t know him knew of him. “That’s what happens when you throw 100 mph in high school and get drafted in the first round by the Yankees,” Rasmussen says. The Yankees had taken Cole 28th overall out of Orange Lutheran High. They had from June 5 until Aug. 15 to sign him. Bruins players were certain Cole’s training with them was a tactic Scott Boras, his advisor, was using to squeeze the Yankees for a bigger signing bonus.

“You thought, ‘OK, it sounded nice. Gerrit could come here and be the Friday night starter. But now he can go take $4 million as an 18-year-old. How can he turn that down?’” says Danny Lee, a former UCLA broadcaster.

On campus the day before the signing deadline, Cole asked Decker, the team’s senior captain, “Hey, Cody, you think I’m going to be here tomorrow?”

“I looked at him and said, ‘No. If you are, I’m going to kill you,’” Decker recalls. “He asked why. I’m like, ‘Because you’re being offered so much money. … If you turn down your money, I’m going to lose my mind.’

“He looked me dead in the eye and, without even an ounce of (sarcasm), says, ‘Or I’ll just play here for three years, go first overall and sign for $10 million.’

New field paying collateral dividends - top kids in recruiting footprint getting exposed to campus/facilities early (sorry for size - working off mobile all weekend);

The new names from the UConn baseball listing of summer ball player assignments that we have not seen before:

Enzo Stefanoni is playing with Vermont of the NECBL. Stefanoni is a RHP, he is a grad transfer from Harvard. UConn is definitely making use of the Grad transfer market.

Curren Larson is a RHP, and he is listed on the Waterloo Bucks of the Northwoods League as being a California JUCO from Saddleback College. He is listed as being a redshirt sophomore on the Waterloo roster. So he is the latest UConn Cali JUCO.

GameTime CT First Team All State Baseball UConn connections:
  • Frank Mozzicato
  • Ryan Daniels
  • Kolby Pascarelli (notes that Kolby will do PG year @ St Thomas More before heading to play @ UConn so he probably bounces into 2022 Class)
** Connor Podeszwa headed to play ball @ Tufts **

Second Team/Honorable Mention:
  • Matt Garbowski
  • Drew Kron
  • Braden Quinn
  • Jack Peterson (HM)
** Hank Penders (HM) **

“That honor was awarded to Connor Podeszwa of Waterford High this morning, Gatorade officials announced.”
Much congrats is in order for the son of the UConn assistant but Gatorade got this wrong in my opinion.

More on Mavrick Rizy. He's a big boy, that's for sure.

Rizy is a talented, projectable 6-foot-7, 195 pound right-handed pitching prospect. The delivery has gone through a little bit of an alteration. Rizy looks like he has worked to get his release point well out in front, causing his fastball to work downhill and free up his arm. The result is a fastball that sits 84-86 MPH with heavy downward sink. Rizy also mixed in a new, harder breaking ball at 70 MPH that impressed. The spin was tight. The break was late and changed planes from his fastball. Rizy also showed a good change-up at 79-80 MPH with similar action to his fastball.

Rizy has been a guy that has shown potential. That potential may be starting to kickstart. The mechanical change he’s made has allowed his arm talent to come to the forefront. His velocity has already jumped five MPH since the change.<

6 foot 7?!!! As a sophomore in high school, goodness gracious! Sitting in the mid to high 80s as a sophomore is mighty impressive too. So far, the 2024 class with Tirado is looking great! Mavrik is a great name too

Looks like a good pickup. I like the early commitment as a sophomore as well. Let's hope that he is good but not too good until he gets to UConn.
