A few other future Huskies make the team as well:

Class LL
Will Lucas

Class S
Matt Bonvicini
Tim Pfaffenbichler

Not sure how I could miss a Pfaffenbichler...

UConn baseball has updated its summer ball assignments list. That list shows that UConn has picked up another new JUCO transfer pitcher from California. LHP Chase Gardner is playing for the Healdsburg Prune Packers of the California Collegiate League this summer. The Healdsburg roster does show Gardner as going to UConn. In 2016 Gardner played for the San Francisco Dons, and then for the 2017 season he transferred to the JUCO ranks at the College of Marin where he was a starting pitcher.

Here's a talent evaluation of Gardner from the PerfectGame website that is a few years old:

"Dec 06, 2014

PG Grade: 8.5

Chase Gardner is a 2015 LHP/1B with a 6-5 220 lb. frame from Novato, CA who attends Novato HS. Extra-large, athletic build with broad shoulders and long limbs with room to fill out with additional strength. Primary left-handed pitcher, throws from a high three-quarter arm slot with a short and quick arm action coming through the back. Creates angle and downhill plane on fastball with deception towards hitters. High leg lift with slight hip turn at top of delivery. Topped out at 85 mph with fastball, comes out of hand easily, up tempo delivery and located well to both sides of the plate. Projects for more velocity with incorporation of lower half, induced ground ball contact. Developing feel for changeup at 71 mph, showed a short 1-7 curveball at 67 mph. Pounded lower quadrants of strike zone with fastball. Good student. Named to West Uncommitted Top Prospect List."

Yes, and the name fits. I went to my brother's wedding in Healdsburg several years ago. California Wine Country to the max.

UConn continues to mine the west JUCO recruits After getting two pitchers, I was wondering if UConn would get a hitter to follow in the tradition of Blake Davey and Joe DeRoche-Duffin. And sure enough, here comes Thad Phillips. Now we will have to see if Phillips turns up on the next summer baseball assignment list.

Last year no one on this board knew that west coast JUCO transfer Isaac Feldstein was coming to UConn until the Alumni game in late September. Now we have found out about three west coast JUCO transfers to UConn quite recently, and all three were found out through UConn releases and tweets. While I don't know for sure if this is true, I'm inclined to chalk this sudden release of recruiting information up to the influence of Chris Jones.

So can we revisit the commitment list and list who we know are gone from this year's roster? SO many new commits it feels like we have 13 new kids coming in and only about 8 leaving.

Here is the commitment list for the coming season:

2018 season

Christian Fedko - 3B/SS
Luke Broadhurst - SS
Andy Hague - 2B
Matt Bonvicini -1B
Robbie Jones - 1B/OF/LHP
Thad Phillips - C/OF (JUCO)
Vinnie Pallisco - 1B/OF (Avery Point JUCO)

Joe Simeone - RHP
Jarrod Melle - RHP
Colby Dunlop - RHP
Angus Mayock - RHP
AJ Denny - LHP
Jeffrey Kertsen - RHP (JUCO)
Chase Gardner - LHP (JUCO)

I think Vinnie Pallisco is a walk on candidate who is not guaranteed a spot on the roster for next spring.

As for players who are not coming back, three players (Hintze, Chiseri, and Schwartz) were deleted from UConn's 35 player spring roster as the season progressed, leaving 32 players. I have heard that another player, redshirt freshman Josh Loeffler is not on the current summer roster, but it is possible he may try to walk on to the team in the fall. 7 seniors have used up their eligibility, and 3 juniors (Montgomerie, Russell, Yahn) were drafted and and are going into pro ball.

UConn baseball has put out another update to the summer ball assignment list, and that list reveals that the Huskies have another California JUCO recruit. Michael Woodworth, who is playing this summer for the Neptune Beach Pearl of the California Collegiate League. Woodworth is a JUCO from Sierra College, where he was a teammate of Jeffrey Kertsen, another California JUCO recruit of the Huskies. Woodworth played CF this past season for Sierra College. For those who are counting, with the addition of Woodworth UConn now has four California JUCO's who will be new to the Storrs campus this fall.

The New London Day has a preview story on the Mystic Schooners. In that story, they mention a player from Avery Point:

"First baseman/outfielder Vinnie Pallisco contributed to UConn-Avery Point's run to the NJCAA Division II World Series. He'll join the Huskies in Storrs in the fall."

Orbe optimistic about defending NECBL champion Schooners

Vinnie Pallisco is no longer on the Mystic Schooners roster.

Gavin Kee just committed to UConn. Class of 2019 Outfielder from Norwalk (Norwalk HS). Plays travel ball with Clubhouse in Fairfield. Also had interest from schools like BC and UMD. Huge bat.
