Why is Coach JMac wearing a boot? I noticed in a mound visit by him in the FAU game that he is wearing one.

Fell during the last ice storm in the Northeast. Got to imagine him lugging that out to the mound it must be important or he's not happy :)

Thanks. I didn't detect much of a limp so it must be healing nicely.

UConn finally got some solid pitching in the last game against FAU. It really helped that the starting pitcher Tom Ellisen had a very good game, as did the pitchers who came out of the bullpen that game. We'll have to see what happens with Cooke and Van Emon and see if they get continue to get starts out in California this weekend. I suspect that they will, but you never know.

As for the position players listed on the team roster, 14 out of 16 have gotten playing time over the 6 games that have been played. The only ones not to get any playing time are freshmen Jack LaRose and Gabriel Tirado, I am guessing that neither of them traveled with the team over the first 2 weekends of the season..

Anyway, the position players have for the most part done pretty well over the first 6 games of the season. With the exception of Connor Lane, the bench players who have gotten playing time have done very well offensively. It definitely is looking like that with the position players that it appears that the depth of ability on this UConn team is very good. If some of the starters who are not doing well continue to have problems with their offense, they could find there way to the bench.

One player who is off to a slow start offensively is the leadoff hitter Caleb Shpur. I would guess it is very possible that he may be moved the bottom of the order or to the bench if he continues not to get on base.

I think that based on these stats, the UConn offense is generally doing pretty good over the first 9 games. They have shown good power plus a good ability to get on base. If the pitching had done a better job, the team would have a bunch more wins. Hopefully the pitching staff will improve as the season goes along.

Hitting has been really good given the quality of opposition. Pitching has been horrific. And defense and baserunning have a long ways to go as well. The season isn't anywhere near over, but we have a lot to improve upon to have a UConn--like season.

Yes, better defense and baserunning would help, but the pitching in games that Tom Ellisen did not start has been a huge problem. Just look at the UConn team ERA.
