With a strong pitching performance over the weekend, UConn's team ERA dropped to 5.61 after flirting with (and actually slightly exceeding) the 6.00 mark a couple weeks ago. Opponents team ERA versus the Huskies was over 8. Coach Penders always talks about not giving away "free 90's." In a combined 17 innings this weekend, Husky starters did not allow a single walk (although there were three hit batters) while striking out 19. Overall, the numbers weren't bad, either - 27 IP, 5 BB, 5 HBP and 29 K's. That's a little over 3 "free 90's" per game, a stat that will keep you in a lot of games and win you a large percentage of them.
