UConn Announces Jason Candle as New Head Football Coach (Updated)

Take the Candle family to Shady Glen (for a Bernice Original), UConn Dairy Bar, Louis Lunch (the birthplace of the Hamburger), Ted's for a steamed burger along with Pepe's, Sal's or Modern... And don't forget Lobster at Abbott's and a trip to The Lake (Lake Compounce), to show them the oldest amusement park in the USA.
Why in hell would you take someone to Lake Compounce who's lived a short drive from Cedar Point? He'd just say something like, "That's precious."

I imagine he'd have more fun at ESPN.

I'll add there are some pretty good places to eat in Toledo.

OT: Detroit pizza, always appeared to be a pan of 1/2 inch deep bread with some cheese and stuff tossed on. Never had any I really liked during a several month project in the Detroit ‘burbs. IMHO, rubbish!
Gotta disagree. My oldest son lives in Detroit and introduced us to their pizza. While New Haven style pizza is best Detroit style is still pretty darn good

-> First, Benedict simply wanted to see Candle coach. So on Saturday, Nov. 29, four days after Jim Mora announced he was departing for Colorado State, Benedict traveled to Mount Pleasant, Mich., to watch Toledo face Central Michigan in its regular season finale. It was a blustery, cold, snowy day at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

“He didn’t know I was there, and it wasn’t meant for him to know I was there,” Benedict said Saturday by phone, hours after UConn announced Candle as its next coach. “It was nice being at a football game where I didn’t have a rooting interest, per se. My main focus was on his movements, watching him interact with his players, watching his players interact with his other coaches, watching the organization on the sideline. I wasn’t there to evaluate his offensive or defensive schemes. I was there to take it all in. I primarily focused on him. I watched him more than I was watching the game.” <-

->… “One of, if not the, most important thing I do is hire head coaches,” Benedict said. “I take this role and responsibility extremely seriously. Not that any previous search or any search is easy, but this cycle within college football, I don’t know if it’s unprecedented, but certainly there was a lot going on relative to coaching movement. That put even more of a premium and probably more pressure on the situation for me to have a good result. I have been doing nothing other than trying to find and identify who that next leader was going to be. My first intuition about this search as we quickly started building a list of candidates was to go see Jason Candle. I went and saw Jason Candle.” <-

If Candle works out and Dave gets us into a power conference, I truly think he'd be one of the greatest ADs of all time.

You listen to these stories during realignment where these other schools ADs and presidents are basically dragged kicking and screaming into obviously better situations. You see these disaster coaching searches in the news. It makes you appreciate stuff like this even more.

II don't like the way he left, but in college football, almost all exits are messy.
I agree with almost all of your post. But "don't like the way he left" ? Come on, man. This is FBS football not some 6-7 year old youth football team. People did this with Randy and it was nonsense back then. And yes, almost all exits are messy. College athletics is a swamp. A disgraceful mess that is sowing the seeds of it's own destruction.

I liked Geno's take on Coach Candle having a little bit of an edge. That quite frankly is a must at UConn and has led to our success in sports over the years. Diaco and PP and RE 2.0 did not have it imo. I hope this hire can help retain players from our current team. There is a lot to work with right there. Interesting how DB did his work under the radar as we all chimed in. I'm impressed.

Let's enjoy the moment before the sulking over the speed of transfer commits begins. We did lose a lot this year and that I think had a lot to do with Mora deciding now was the time to head back west.

But in this era, with enough smarts and money, you should be able to field a team thar beats our schedule.

I recognize Sammis' contribution to the most exciting offense this program have seen since probably ever and would be fine with him staying on but, I'm agnostic on anyone staying or returning based on familiarity. Winning is job one and now belongs to Candle. Let him do it.

That said, I wouldn't mind Neider coming back.

True...like Tony Paco's the restaurant Col Klinger (Jamie Farr) talked about on M*A*S*H. But Toledo doesn't have fresh lobster rolls...

NIL is year-to-year. There's no way we pay him big money any more. Botched recruitment. We will absolutely be pursuing the best QB we can at our level in the portal
How can you say botched recruitment. Anyway. We have a ton of holes to fill. We have a ton of guys to keep. We need a newdefense .To pay for somebody is stupid.

The checkbook is not endless.

This is the most beautiful, movie-like, Ted Lasso-dope story. AD Dave is the GOAT.

That's how I'd describe Sicilian - a style I've never liked. The crust on a good Detroit slice is light and airy.

And I think it's great mojo that one of the first threads on Candle has devolved into a pizza discussion.

After listening to the podcast, I'm hoping we can nab Toledo's secondary coach before he ends up in Cuse with Kehres.

Neider is super talented. Killer not having him here.

I also don't want to beat a dead horse but after reading that, there's no way in heck that Dave picked Randy to come back. That had to be a booster thing where they paid up to fire Diaco then he had to hire Edsall back.
... and he was hamstrung by the money situation. AD David Benedict has been the best AD we've ever had, and that's really saying something. Perkins is legend, but what Benedict has been able to accomplish, when you consider the situation that he was put in, is nothing short of miraculous...

Don’t know. I think I was watching Sportscenter that day instead of CNN.

I hate good byes too. Don’t take it personally

Detroit and Sicilian styles may appear similar but Detroit far superior. Might as well just open as many different style of pizza joints as is possible and call it the Pizza Capital of the World!!! Or.. was that name taken already??

Not sure of what to think just yet but I like the possible mojo of JC's initials being the same as Jim Calhoun. 😜
Hope he is not just attracted by a six year contract, more money and exposure but believes as Jim did, the situation is doable.
Let's go Jason and let's go Huskies !!!!!!

I like the way Candle left Toledo. Before Candle was announced by UConn as the next head coach, he had a team meeting to look his players in the eye to tell them he was leaving. Mora didn't do that. Granted, it was tough timing due to the Thanksgiving break, but Mora had met with CSU in Connecticut before the final game, so he knew he was leaving when he sent everyone home for Thanksgiving.

Also, I didn't like the Millen quotes, Mora's good friend, trashing UConn and Mora highlighting what he thought were the negatives of the UConn job.
