UConn Announces Jason Candle as New Head Football Coach (Updated)

We already payed big bucks$$ for a QB already on the roster.

Pay a lot at the risk of having a D like this year.

It looks to me like a missed evaluation by Mora & the staff at the time. If the new staff sees it the same way, I sure hope they wouldn’t feel obligated to turn the offense over to him because the prior staff paid big bucks. I’m sure they wouldn’t. Btw, how many years is UConn tied into that commitment financially?

I agree the D needs to be rebuilt this off-season but QB is the most important position on the team.

I'm not sure that he'll bring many of his coordinators. He'll have more money to hire who he wants and I think his staff won't look that similar to his Toledo staff. I know that he'll want some continuity with UConn staff although I don't know if Mora has poached some of our staff

To clarify, not necessarily his OC and DC from Toledo, but be able to pick his own coordinators, rather than be told he has to keep Sammis.

Wonder if Mora would have gone to the portal if Fagnano was not able to get his 7th year.
I do kind of wonder on Mora’s ability to bring in a quarterback. Joe wasn’t his recruit really. And frankly, it took Nick going down until Mora finally gave him a chance to get in there and do his thing.

Little did he know that he had a healthy Heisman candidate sitting on the bench of half a season.

And other quarterbacks Mora recruited since haven’t really turned into anything except for transfers.

I hear the new coach has a star redshirt freshman quarterback at Toledo that may follow him.

I was so disappointed with Mora leaving but he’s had a number of misses recruiting in his time here and it’ll be refreshing to have someone new with a background like Candle who actually has a very impressive recruiting résumé!

And what I like about his résumé is that he had to recruit for players to come to play in the Mac, and didn’t have the P4 brand behind him, but still apparently did quite well with all the NFL pics that were developed during his tenure!

On we go!

As much as worrying about "recruiting" New England makes me cringe, there has to be a larger pool of players that UConn has not been getting in the past. They cannot all be "too good for UConn" or "not good enough for UConn."

He apparently has recruiting connections in Florida and obviously Ohio. Assume PA as well. And our recent success combined with Rutgers, BC, Cuse struggles may open up a few doors as well. I think it's a given you need to announce yourself to CT and Northeast athletes and Coaches by showing up to events and running Camps etc. Hopefully there's a connection. But the days of coddling them are over. Winning is what works best.

-> First, Benedict simply wanted to see Candle coach. So on Saturday, Nov. 29, four days after Jim Mora announced he was departing for Colorado State, Benedict traveled to Mount Pleasant, Mich., to watch Toledo face Central Michigan in its regular season finale. It was a blustery, cold, snowy day at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

“He didn’t know I was there, and it wasn’t meant for him to know I was there,” Benedict said Saturday by phone, hours after UConn announced Candle as its next coach. “It was nice being at a football game where I didn’t have a rooting interest, per se. My main focus was on his movements, watching him interact with his players, watching his players interact with his other coaches, watching the organization on the sideline. I wasn’t there to evaluate his offensive or defensive schemes. I was there to take it all in. I primarily focused on him. I watched him more than I was watching the game.” <-

->… “One of, if not the, most important thing I do is hire head coaches,” Benedict said. “I take this role and responsibility extremely seriously. Not that any previous search or any search is easy, but this cycle within college football, I don’t know if it’s unprecedented, but certainly there was a lot going on relative to coaching movement. That put even more of a premium and probably more pressure on the situation for me to have a good result. I have been doing nothing other than trying to find and identify who that next leader was going to be. My first intuition about this search as we quickly started building a list of candidates was to go see Jason Candle. I went and saw Jason Candle.” <-

How many big time ADs would do this? Benedict is a gem

NIL is year-to-year. There's no way we pay him big money any more. Botched recruitment. We will absolutely be pursuing the best QB we can at our level in the portal
For grins and giggles how much do you think UConn will pay for a portal QB? $250k? $500k? $750k?

I honestly have no idea what a program trying to be top 30-50 program pays for a QB.

Who's taking him to Wooster Street? Because, you know......New Have pizza......
Take the Candle family to Shady Glen (for a Bernice Original), UConn Dairy Bar, Louis Lunch (the birthplace of the Hamburger), Ted's for a steamed burger along with Pepe's, Sal's or Modern... And don't forget Lobster at Abbott's and a trip to The Lake (Lake Compounce), to show them the oldest amusement park in the USA.
