UCLA @ Stanford - 12/29/17

Will be an interesting game. Stanford is still groping to find the right mix, but McPhee's strong showing against Tennessee in her first game back from injury does bode well for them.

UCLA has been rather inconsistent since losing to UConn. They took a disappointing loss to Oklahoma State in Stillwater and generally haven't been at their best. Both teams will be hungry to start off Pac-12 play with a win.

This game is actually reminiscent of how UCLA started the game against Oklahoma State — ice-cold. Stanford isn't actually burning up the nets either, but they're finding openings on the inside.

Stanford has all their players back too which will help. I said in another thread not to count out the Cardinal. Getting both McPhee and Carrington back is huge for them. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if they finished at or near the top of the PAC12.

Stanford goes on an 11-0 run to lead 30-18 in 2Q.

If it wasn't for the transition play of Canada and the two 3-pointers hit by Japreece Dean, UCLA would be getting blown out. UCLA looks utterly stagnant on half-court offense, and very unconfident in shooting.

Getting both McPhee and Carrington healthy has been a big thing for Stanford.

.-.
32-29 Stanford at the half. UCLA has the momentum.

How about the stat line for Jordin Canada at the half: 13 points, 3 assists, 5 steals, 4 rebounds. And she isn't even shooting particularly well. If her teammates were hitting shots, she'd have at least 6 assists.

Japreece Dean, the newly eligible transfer from Texas Tech, has given UCLA a major boost in the backcourt.

Canada is just killing Stanford w/ her speed on D harassing ball handlers and jumping passing lanes. Stanford has 3 PGs, and none of the look up to the task.

Both teams looked awful early. Stanford got rolling, but UCLA closed the half on a run.

Just not a very well-played game. But this might be the best Stanford has looked all season. UCLA's half-court offense just looks disjointed, and they are still sooooooo cold. Amazing that they're only down by 8 when they're shooting 30%.

UCLA has a lot of 1:1 play. Just players taking shots. Took a look at their assists and they have 5 assists and Jordin Canada has 3 of them.

Stanford TO's. Gotta be getting close to 20, w/ 1 quarter left to play. Plus Canada has made enough big plays to keep it close. Every time Stanford starts to pull away, they turn it over 3 or 4 possessions in a row. Should be up 12 or more right now, instead they are clinging to a 2 point lead after 3 quarters.

.-.
Apparently Canada can only hit a 3 when there's less than 5 seconds on the clock. She pulls UCLA back to within 2 at the end of 3Q.

Japreece Dean hit another 3 late in the quarter to spark another mini-run for UCLA.

Everyone else for UCLA is just playing either meh or bad.

McPhee w/ a "happy birthday!" shot to beat the buzzer.

Stanford is doing a solid job rebounding.

McPhee sat out a lot of the 3rd quarter w/ foul trouble, but taking over to start the 4th.

.-.
Its now or never for the Bruins. If they don't put something together they are gonna fall to the Cardinal in their PAC12 debut.

That's the second time that a Stanford player has missed both free throws but UCLA has failed to secure the rebound, and Stanford immediately hit a 3.

Details.

I will say, that was a really bizarre foul call on Onyenwere on the last rebound. She had position and her box-out just fell down.

Stanford FT shooting sucks again tonight (5-12).

McPhee really struggled against UConn, but every other game she's played this year she's been really good. Too bad she missed about a month.

Fingall has come up big for Stanford tonight too.

Canada is only 7-24 from the field. She's done a lot of things well, but she's gotta shoot better than that.

OT, but Cal is up 14 on USC late in the 3rd quarter.

There it is again. 12 point lead cut in half and Stanford can't handle the full court press.

.-.
Fingall has gotten away with shoving for rebounding position all night. She finally gets called for a loose ball foul.

It's frustrating that Stanford is finally playing well after stinking it up against its entire OOC schedule. This makes the conference look bad.

I know Tara has seen a full court press before. Doesn't appear her team has a clue what to do at the moment.

They're hitting some shots. Everybody looks better when the ball is going thru the net. Between Stanford's TOs and UCLA's shooting woes, this game is not a great showcase for the Pac 12.

Stanford finally hitting FTs (6-7) and too much McPhee in the 4th quarter.

McPhee---26 points on 10-16 FG and 13 pts in the 4th quarter.

Wow, UCLA starts conference play @ Stanford, @ Cal, then host Oregon and Oregon St. 3 out of the 4 are ranked, and Stanford is Stanford.
