USA will play the Winner of Japan vs Spain in the Quarter Finals. I think USA will end up playing Spain.

Spain beat Japan 71-64.

I like a player on Spain who is only 17 years old. #10 Elena Buenavida Estevez

Would love to see her in a US college in a year or two.

Again they displayed the 48-star flag for the National Anthem

Does anyone know what Jewell Spear, after a very good first game against Italy, has not played since then? Injury? Illness? Left the team?

I asked the same question in another thread. In the box scores it lists her name with a comment “Did not play - coach’s decision.” I have no idea what that means.

Looks like Amari jammed a finger just before half time. :mad::mad::(:(

Geno commented that Azzi “shoots it the same way every time.” She knocked down two 3’s from the wing, and if you didn’t know better, you would swear it was a replay. Azzi’s shooting mechanics are flawless. I suspect that any “shooting slumps” will be few and far between.

That horn from her father is beyond obnoxious. If he brings that into Gampel, I won’t hesitate to confront him. No one should have to watch or play a basketball game with that in the back(fore)ground.
And it is done only when the opponent has the ball. At least, some restraint that it is not done during opponent FT's:rolleyes:

Just thought I’d point out that Tim Fudd is 6’7” and I’m guessing over 250lbs. Just sayin……

My money's on Jordy. I didn't notice the "horn," but it's very tacky to be using so incendiary a device in public. How 'bout them soccer vuvuzelas?
By the way, did you enjoy watching Azzi bury a 3 from the right side of the court and then seconds later see Caitlin do the same from the left side? This is a harbinger of what's in store with Paige and Azzi--horn or no horn.
Get him, Jordy.

You don't think Jordy was going there without bringin' a coupla guns do ya. :)

Buenavista a 2022 UCLA commit. Teammate Marta Morales committed to UCLA 2021 class.

A few random thoughts on the Taipei blowout:

Azzi does have beautiful form on her shot and played the entire game under control and always looking for a teammate to pass to;
As noted in a different thread, Citron is going to do for ND what SO did for Oregon-she just does everything right;
I wonder how many of the FR (, SC etc) will be eligible to play next year if there is another U19 tournament;
I was much more impressed with Amari today. She rebounded well, blocked a shot, and made a nice 8-10 foot jumper from the baseline. The two traveling calls on her in the first half were both terrible calls. One negative, going 0-2 on her FTs, although I think it is more difficult making them during a stoppage of play when no one else is on the court;
Is it just me or does anyone else notice the similarity of appearance between Amari and Jersey W,? Besides almost looking like sisters, they are about the same size and wear their hair in the same way, The main difference I can latch onto while either of them (or both) are on the court is that AD's bun is a lighter color;
I thought Verhulst (sp) looked much better today and D Johnson still has not passed up a shot if one was available; and finally,
C. Clark continues to impress and show that she earned her AA status last year. She was not shot-hunting and made some outstanding passes

I can't imagine any country staying within 15-20 of us!

That’s standard in a lot of pro box scores. It just means the player was reportedly available to play (not injured, sick, or suspended) but did not get in the game.

That may be so. But I did notice that Spear is not even on the bench with the US team. If she was injured, I would be expect to see her cheering on her teammates from the sidelines. Sick? Suspended?

Thanks. I wasnt up to date that far out. Nice to have her in my back yard. Morales, too.

I really like Azzi parents--they seem to have provided all the things to make Azzi successful, but I had to mute the telecast because of that incessantly annoying horn. You would think since he has been in coaching, he would have more "sophisticated" means to celebrate Azzi's and her team's performance than with some refugee horn from a World Cup trash bin...

Easy victory for Team USA 129-45. Team USA next plays Spain which will give USA a tougher game.

Box Score: USA v Chinese Taipei boxscore - FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup 2021 - 11 August - FIBA.basketball

Looking at other results, I'm surprised Canada beat France 79-72.

I had Team USA facing either Russia or France for the Gold Medal Game.

Does anyone have an opinion on how good Mali is? Can they beat Russia in their next game?

Russia is playing Egypt right now and it's a 3 point game half way through the second quarter.
Based on that, I would say that Mali has a chance.
