How many times have you watched Cox play and in how many different games? Just curious....

Not a ton but enough to feel confident about my observations. This whole tourney plus some AAU games. Maybe 10 total.

O Kib, I laughed when I saw that you "liked" my post, and I like that you "liked" it.

All in fun. I like this one, too. Great point(s)

One of my absolutely favorite lines is from Richard Russo's novel "Staight Man" (also one of my favorite novels). Classroom scene, student is struggling to understand something the Prof (and protagonist) has said. Finally, he says; "Oh, I get it. It's, like, a metaphor."
"No, Bobo, if it was LIKE a metaphor it would be a simile." :)

Lighten up. I don't remember saying anything bad about KLS's game... all I said was I like Cox's game better, at least from what I saw in this game. She brought tremendous energy on both end of the floor.

You stated the obvious. Everybody who watched the game knows she was far and away the USA's best player in the championship game. It might have meant more if you had mentioned who was the best player through all the games, someone who hurt her ankle, was out for two or three exhibition games due to an illness and who played the most minutes of anyone despite all that. Katie Lou led the team in scoring and three point shooting. Give a complete picture not a partial one and I'll lighten up.

I don't know about Cox and good passing, but again she will get better

KLS has to get better in making teams pay when they run her off the 3point line and be able to get her own shot, she has to get better defensively so that she doesn't just become a spot up shooter and you can only put her in as specialist when you need a 3, but Geno will let her know all these things,

Then you really haven't watched her or maybe it's something else? Hmmmmm!
KLS will do whatever it takes and whatever the coach wants her to do, being from the west and attending HS, AAU and always watching USA as I have been very interested in a lot if foreign players as we are currently recruiting Dubei from Hungary. This kid can play and not only that but knows herself what she needs to work. You isolate some instances where she is clearly not 100% and where there is a whole team doing the same thing as you are isolating. What other player could be asked to play the point where she was needed having last year played the 3 and the 4. She plays those minutes as the coach needed her on the floor even though she herself wasn't at full strength.

I remember watching another player used in the same way from my local backyard, I called her a competitor not a basketball player. Every player has things they need to work but not many are willing to take on the challenge of playing out of their comfort zone.

That player also had the courage to go to Uconn and I see the same in this kid.

Cox will be a fine player if she gets the right coaching. As we have seen with many posts, there are nt many programs that can develop them.

Cox will be a real good BB player.in fact she is now!..But his game is probably not a good gage of her talent,I don't think anyone on the gray teams"top of head" is above her shoulder, pretty much a mismatch under the bucket.

How many players her size do you think she's likely to go up against in college? Sure, some 6-7 behemoth might cause her trouble just as BYU's Harmon did to Dolson and Stewart, but that's a rarity.

Watch the game. Cox moves around defenders to score. She makes numerous good passes from outside. She does other things that have little or anything to do with sheer size.

I am astounded how people get insulted for Stewie that someone dared to praise Cox. Lighten up. Otherwise just don't recruit Cox? Give me a break. These are teenagers with a lot more to learn.

My God are you tough to reason with.Size meant /means a bunch. Her size meant everything in the game.

The fact that I'm not agreeing with you means I'm tough to reason with? Okie dokey.

You were the one suggesting we couldn't gage her talent from her performance due to a size difference. By that standard you couldn't gage her talent against 97% of the competition she has or will face.

Nancy Mulkey has 5 inches on Cox. Why doesn't Mulkey show off the skills and ability that Cox does, or more since she's much taller?

Saying extra height gives some players built in advantages is one thing. Saying you can't tell a player's ability because she's not facing players her height is another.

Inhale,Sure when you can't give a basic fact.and not make a person feel wrong!I give up.I am to old for this!!

Just remember this is a public board and anybody can post. sometimes it's just important to know that you said what you had to stay and it really doesn't matter whether not other people agree with you.
it's out there

It is so annoying knowing you are correct and another can not see the fact.

You said Cox' height advantage in the link I provided meant her performance was not a good gauge of her talent. How does that make you correct? Geno and Shea happened to be in the stands almost assuredly for the sole purpose of watching Cox. Now why would they be doing that if it was a waste of their time due to it not being a proper gauge of what Cox can do?

I think you gotta give this one up Slu. Don't think you're gonna get through this one. (He's too old I guess. ;) )

One of my all time favorite cartoons...

WPF does have a point, if I watch a kid I am looking for better competition, like against like. But of course everyone has their own opinion.

I thought that was the whole idea. ;)

Ha reminds me of Bane "..it doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan."

Her size meant everything in the game.

That's baloney. You can tell if someone is a player. I'll go way back to when I was in high school when our team played against Mike Gminski. He was 6'10' or so and our center was 6' 2". He scored over 40 points and didn't miss more than a couple shots. Yeah, he was dominant size-wise. Even so you tell that the guy was freakin' good.

With all due respect,No you gage going head to head with another big girl. That type game ONLY GIVES A BALL PARK IDEA.The TRUE test is BIG ON BIG.And being old I have seen more basketball (boys and girls) than the other gentleman to this point in his life. And a am fully confident withthat statement. Now I am not going on and on with you .Finished.You ask Geno what he thinks. When he attends these games ,he tries to see the player against other GOOD BIG players to get the proper gage.NOT against the POOR SMALL OR SLOW. teams and poor players.Your buddy Slu and you think about it the last sentence. And I am NOT SAYING the team she played is poor but MATCH UP WAS NOT THERE in the game.THE MATCH UP WAS NOT IN THAT GAME.ByBy Got to head out to Starbucks with my boy,Westy.

You are not the only old guy on this board. I am 82 today (honest!) and I am from the heart (and soul) of Western Pennsylvania -- Pittsburgh. A true Yinzer!

I think I have probably watched as much basketball as you and I guarantee I have had more people on this board disagree with my opinions than you have. Also been deleted more often. You can't imagine how often I have had to post "I concede the point" when proven wrong.

But I take it all in stride and I enjoy the Boneyard immensely. I suggest you relax, knock down an Iron City Beer, and enjoy yourself. And keep posting!

Good luck.

Happy Birthday Kib..!!!
You may have to "concede" on occasion, but you get extra credit for finding a talented Canadian nurse (Mrs. Kib) way before Geno ever did...;)

I like Lauren Cox. I do not want to offend anyone, but she must be a decent player just by her rankings.
Every scouting service I have seen has her at # 1 or # 2. I know you can't tell how good she will be in college, but some of these services have very capable people judging talent. I have said this before, she is as fundamentally sound as any pure posts I have seen recently.

I do not believe you should compare players in different years, although we all love to do so. I don't see how you can compare players who play different positions. One might be a TRUE back to the basket center, and one may be a power forward who roams a little bit.

I personally would offer Lauren Cox right now. I don't know if Geno has offered yet, but I bet he likes what he sees.

Not trying to make any point, but although Mike Gminski's Masuk High School beat every team in it's league, they were unable to win a state title in any of the three years that Mike was there. ( He graduated early.) I believe they usually bowed out early in the state tourney, but not sure about that.

Wow great to know another from Pitt. How did you get involved with UCONN girls team. You a Grad from there?

After concluding my Army career (then two years in Saudi Arabia, where I met my wife), I came to Connecticut to live, work, then retire again. Once I spotted those teams coached by Geno, I was hooked. Then I discovered the Boneyard and it's been Nirvana ever since.

While it would be nice to see her compete against another great 6-4,6-5 player, there really aren't that many out there.

And 1) she just competed against/with some of the best U17 in the world
2) even in games where the talent level is much lower, people who really know basketball (I.e. Not just "old" and been around forever) can still evaluate talent. People who really know what they are looking for can see talent. They are not just looking at stats.
