All true. But this was really the first year we used the portal, coming off a 1-11 season.

Regardless, the portal was NOT built to help middle of the road non-P5 teams. At worse, our 6-6 season was just fatten the calf. At best, we get left alone. We just lost our top tail back. Not very reassuring.
I want to believe that JM will be able to improve the win total and gain more support from our fans and the attention of better recruits and portal players.
I want to believe that will lead to continued success, more players drafted and the recognition that will land us in a moneyed conference in the next round of realignment.
Now, can I make myself believe that and can JM make all that happen?
I'm hoping and believing!

I scoff at the premise that most of these kids have a master plan when they hit the portal.
There is that. I suspect many want playing time but mostly have no idea what or where they will get it. For every Joe Burrow there are probably 3 who were backups at their original school and remain backups at the new one.

I get why staffs and programs would keep up appearances and wish these kids well when they transfer, but why do fans do it? Seems like virtue signaling to me.

hope carter gets stuck on the bench. good riddance. next man up.

I'll "always be a husky" sounds empty when you're bailing on your teammates from a team on the rise.

If Nebraska is the destination, money could be the reason. Maybe NIL, but more likely coaches' salaries.

Rhule got $7,000,000 for assistant coaches' salaries so with their former relationship and all that money it's easy to see why Barthel would go there. If Barthel is the reason NC is leaving, we can only hope he cares as much about NC's future as many here do and didn't simply pull him away to make himself look good.

Boosters of the WBB team.
I saw Nebraska is opening their new $165,000,000 Football facility.
The level of schizophrenia here is always good for a laugh.
Some of the same people who refer to fans in the South and Midwest as (enter derogatory appelation here) in one thread will proclaim in another that we need deep pocket donors like those in oil or agriculture to step up and provide the money to make UConn great again.

I fully expect more transfers out of UConn

Here is my list of players who I don't want to leave.

1. Turner, Millen, Roberson at QB. I am fine with bringing in new QB but I'd like to see those three return. And have an open competition in spring.

2. Rosa and Houston at RB.

3. Any of the starting O Line with eligibility.

4. Any D Lineman on the two deep

5. Mitchell at LB

6. Any DB who played significant snaps

7. Placekicker

Anyone else who wants to leave go ahead. There isn't a single WR I feel is critical or whose skills can't be replaced.

LB needs a huge infusion of talent based off who is leaving.

After seeing what mora did last year to pull together a recruiting class out of nothing, I have a good deal of faith that the portal will be kind to us again. And not to mention we are a far more desirable program now than we were last year.

Add Brenton (I know that isn’t his name but my spellcheck keeps overriding) i the list as avrunning back. And Joly at tight end (?)

I guaranty you Carter didn't enter the portal to play for UMass or Akron. Please don't take every bit of data from some website as if it's meaningful. He believes he can "move up" in the college football world, there's no reason to think that belief didn't come at least in part from what coaches have told him and, from what I've seen, I think there's no reason he can't play at a P-5 level.

He has two current offers > UMass and Akron.

This is probably a controversial take....and I will probably get scolded by BL...but do we think there was a little tension between Mora and Carter regarding how Carter treated his injury?

As I recall...Carter had an option to play through it...similar to Houston. I remember Mora saying it was Carter's choice. Mora's openness about it being Carter's decision...and the way he praised Houston...makes me wonder if he wasn't disappointed that Carter didn't play through it. And maybe Carter was not happy with the pressure to play and decided to move on.

I am not saying anyone is wrong here...but part of the reason Carter could be leaving could be he didn't feel like he fit with Mora or the other coaches.

It's certainly possible. I wouldn't speculate on something like that without SOME reason to believe it actually happened, but you can if you want.

My point on Carter is that people seemed to think it was a given that he was going to Nebraska following Barthel. Yet, he has been in the portal 2 days and no Nebraska offer even though Nebraska seems to be offering other players (didn't see any RBs) in the portal.

I think the boneyard perception of him is very different than what other schools see and maybe his perception of himself was too. He was just OK in 2021. His amazing games this year came against a crap Utah State team and an FCS team. Then against P5 teams he was average and got hurt. He is a pretty small dude, who is coming off an injury. There are a ton of more established bigger, healthier P5 backs on the market. The likelihood he gets a P5 offer or a high G5 offer is probably not that great. Now that may happen, but even Mora asked if he had "offers" when he entered the portal because the portal is not a friendly place sometimes, especially when 1,000 people drop into it in a day or two. If any P5 offers do come, it will probably be after the portal crop is worked through, which could be a bit.

This comment has nothing to do with Carter in particular. In fact, from everything I've seen and read of him he seems like an upstanding young man and he is certainly a talent on the field.

I think the portal is a mixed blessing for a lot of these kids. It's the right thing to do given the way coaches behave - as soon as a enough guaranteed money comes along they are gone. So how do you ask kids to sit out and give up a year of eligibility? I get it. But, how many young people will have the discipline to recognize that their best interest may be served by sticking with a program and developing? Many, maybe most, will not have the experience, patience or perspective to make sound decisions in that regard. Many will certainly benefit from the portal, but I have little doubt that many will make hasty decisions because something at a given moment didn't break their way.
