Transfer Portal Window 2023

My guess is we have 3 scholarships open to play around with. We need a true PG, 3pt specialist, and a backup Center. Primo would be a really solid option. I'd take my chances with him over a low-major guy who averages 16PPG. He's probably ours if we want him too, considering he's from Hartford
A starting guard who shoots is the top priority (whether he's a PG, combo, or 2G, we will likely have a lot of versatility on the roster). After that, I'll just take talent at whatever position. But we're going to have Castle, Diarra, Solo, and said starting transfer guard who can shoot. There's not a lot of rotation minutes for another guard, so bringing in a Primo or Starling and possibly keeping us from getting a legit starter who can shoot is a problem. If we get the shooter first and then those guys want to come, fine by me.

Whether we need a further bench shooter in the Calcaterra mold will depend on some of the graduation decisions.

I’d take Primo too. Scholarships won’t be an issue. It’ll sort itself out. We need a shooter AND a guard who can break down a defense. As some have said it’d be ideal to get those qualities combined in one player

If Spears would take that microwave role off the bench, we could do worse for a backup guard. Reign in some of the really bad shot selection, like we did with Diarra, and he’s got utility. We just need to land Timberlake/shooter type for the starting 5.

.-.
It probably makes no sense considering my thing with wanting shooters, but i'd be all over Spears in the portal. 17/3/5 in the Big East is legit. I think Hurley could turn him into a Jalen Adams-esque player... same size and Hurley helped Jalen bimp his 3pt% by 5%.

Might just be because I coached against him in hs, but still.

There’s talent here. The staff would need to fix his shot selection issues, but he’s never been in a position where he’ll be held accountable for it and his bad defense. I’m gonna be interested in what he does if he transfers to a team with real aspirations.

Guy absolutely loved the step back J with his heels on the 3 point line.

Can one actually xfer out of a service academy?
Yes, but only before the start of the second year (l left the US Naval Academy during the first year and there was no obligation (they did make me sign a letter that stated I would never be eligible for Navy funded education again...3 years later I was paid a monthly stiped by the Navy for the last year at UConn and subsequently they paid for 4 years of medical school, two master's degrees, residency and fellowship...can't always believe what they make you sign)

Another guard of my interest: Pepperdine's Mike Mitchell hit the portal:

The 6'2 185 incoming junior averaged 11.4p, 4.1r, 5.0a, 2.9 TO, 1.1s, 42.4 2p%, 2.4 3PM at a 44.0 3p% (about 60% of his FGAs from deep). Not a rim attacker, though (21 FTAs this year)

Pepperdine, coached by former Washington coach Lorenzo Romar, played at the 7th fastest pace, so not a bad A/TO ratio despite the speedy play.

Not good defensive metrics, per EvanMiya, though.

Would be very interested if Newton doesn't return. Would be a smooth shooting, veteran PG from the WCC, maybe Joey C can put in a good word?

Maybe the biggest need? Endurance issues? Foul issues. Shooting issues?

It really depends on how ready Singare is. I have never seen him play, but it's not very often that a sub-150 ranked big (who often develop late) is ready to play 10-15mpg on day 1. Shoot, most top-50 bigs aren't ready for big minutes right away.

Too early to say. We could go into next year with only Singare on the bench as a backup big. Or we could go into next year with Singare, Johnson, Springs competing for minutes at the 4/5

Like Kemba?

Primo is going to want more minutes than we can guarantee
How about earning them? A confident player should never be concerned that they won't get enough minutes. If they aren't confident, we shouldn't want them anyway.

He's on the smaller side and had a season ending ankle injury, but 38% career 3pt shooter and good PG skills.

Sounds like the ankle injury was re-aggravating something old this season. I'd really like to recruit him hard if he was out for the season for a surgery to assure it wouldn't happen again, or something.

Small sample size for me on Primo.. Would you characterize him as a ball dominant guard or can he play in a system where he's sharing the ball and setting up teammates when needed??

Seemed like he wants the ball in his hands as much as possible.. No question he's a scorer/shot maker. Co-existing with Castle would be essential if added to roster.

I'm not particularly interested in any of them, but four of Butler's players, led by Jayden Taylor (12.9p, 3.8r, 46.6 2p%, 1.4 3PM, 32.6 3p%, 1.3s), hit the portal today.

The other three (Thomas, Tate, Wilmoth) are more depth pieces but considering all are former three-year recruits, I can see them playing for more PT at a mid-major.

He seems pretty ball dominant and inefficient at Georgetown. Newton's number were quite similar at ECSU. I'd imagine the staff would want to dig into the film more to see what his potential is.

Count me in the "no thanks" camp for Primo Spears.

He's an electric talent, but Spears' lack of a perimeter game (0.8 3PM at 30.0 3p%) turns me off. Also, he was hands down the lowest ranked defender, according to EvanMiya:

I thought about this before and don't hate it, but sort of think bringing Alleyne back as the starting two makes more sense than Newton. He's more of a pure 2, a better shooter, and is close with Castle. Newton would bring the added benefit of another guy who can run the point, but I'm not sure I love Newton as a pure off the ball 2.
Newton has been the better shooter this year and is more versatile than Alleyne.

Newton at ECU was much more efficient than Primo. Better FT, 2pt, and 3pt shooting splits. Better assist rate. 106 to 96 offensive rating.

We have Joey California, how about Malibu or Monterrey Mike? (if Pepperdine is near them)
