Doesn't mean it will work out exactly the same for them. Bryce Hopkins is a total wild card. They lost two first team players and the conference player of the year. Not sure how they will be more talented.

I think they are a top 20 team pre season next year and should be picked to finish in the top 3 of the league. But I don't think they are going 31-5 again.
Ian Jackson, Bryce Hopkins, Joson Sanon, Zuby, and Wilcher is an insanely talented core and I'm sure they'll fill in around it. I think they'll be top 5 preseason along with UConn.

There is no need for Pitino to recruit out of high school now as long as St Johns keeps spending NIL $$ . They will be relevant until they run out of NIL and/or Pitino calls it quits.

Insanely talented but not pieces that necessarily fit together the way his roster was this past season

How did that work out for them last year, they were very physical and top rated defensively?
They won the conference and conference tournament, got a 2 seed, top 10 AP ranking for a large portion of the season, beat us twice. They had the best season of St Johns basketball in probably 40 years. What are we even talking about?

I just don’t believe Stew was promised a starting job from Dan. I’m sure he was promised to have a great opportunity and lots of minutes no matter but nothing more.
I don't see how he doesn't start. He could have gone portal otherwise. It would be hard to imagine he came back with the understanding that he would come off the bench, regardless of more minutes. Stewie is to good not to start his Jr. year, imo he has earned it. He knows what he needs to work on for next season or else.

They're going to be loaded.

Hopefully, with the same results as this year.

Slick Rick is 4x the coach Self is
Calipari handled Pitino in the tournament a lot easier than he handled Self. With that, It would be difficult to argue that Self had a better team than Pitino did.

We are talking about them not advancing beyond the round of 32 and losing to a 10 seed which is mostly how seasons are judged.
Now yes they had a good year and yes he’s buying players at an unprecedented rate with no freshman development.
Are we supposed to praise Pitino and St. John’s for this? They are this huge success to be admired?
They suck no matter where they finish in the BE, and their fans are total pieces of crap.
For the first time in 30 years they have emerged from their ratholes to boast about their “superiority”.
I don’t think Hurley will ever go this route and continue developing high school players with some transfers. It’s still college that way not some pro organization which is what St. John’s now is.

He had all transfers this past season and they ran away with the Big East and got a 2 seed. They spit the bit in the tournament but it worked out pretty damn well for them. They'll be more talented this upcoming season.
I'd be more worried about continuity if Wilcher and Zuby weren't in their 3rd year of Pitino camp.

Who was Duke's pg?

Proctor wasn't the best PG, but he was a PG. They also had Foster who was meh but again still a PG. They also had probably one of the best playmaking PF/SF in college in Flagg. It's completely arguable not having a better PG is why they didn't win it all. They fell apart against the Houston pressure at the end.

That all said, I guess Wilcher played a bit last year, but it was a lot of Richmond. Neither Jackson, nor Sanon are really distributor's, though Jackson can bring it up I guess.

UK fan forum says his pops is a pain in the butt to deal with and from what they linked his pops doesn't seem like such a good guy.
Saw that too, but they probably loved his pops before he decommitted, lol.

It'll be interesting to see where he lands - his schools at the "decision" were UK, Duke, UNC & us.

UNC just lost Cadeut, we could use a backup (although prefer an experienced one), Duke will have little Boozer.

I feel like it won't be long until kids in his range simply choose a place that can get him some dough and where he gets guaranteed playing time. When you're in that 35+ range, why allure to the blue blood that you risk portal shopping over you, instead of going to a program where you will get guaranteed instant PT? There is absolutely no replacement for PT. Play up and transfer.

UConn is looking at Malachi Smith. I won't reveal exactly where they are with him out of respect for Storrs Central, but if you have a subscription there you can read the forum labeled "2025 MBB Transfer Portal Thread". I am not sure if it has already been revealed somewhere else here on the BoneYard.

I'd bet UNC of those four but even that is less likely than somewhere else. They are also claiming he wants to start.

UK is out
Duke has Boozer coming in and still has Proctor/Foster up in the air
UConn has Demary who will start
UNC did pick up Kyan Evans but he might be more of a backup, or at least more easily beat for a starting spot

Wouldn't shock me if he went somewhere else.

4x? Not sure about that. Rick is a better coach for sure and one of the few elite coaches and HOF one at that. However, Calipari is 9-2 in the last 11 games against Pitino.

No coach has done less with more than Bill Self..

All that ridiculous talent and 1 title..
