Transfer Portal Starting to Load

Continuity vs portal talent upgrade, that is the question. The value of the first leans on intangibles, which are hard to quantify.
He's a New York City guard who stockrisers back in 2020 said we had a good chance to get if we got involved.

Seems like we are counting on some serious player development at a couple of positions if we don’t get a couple more transfers.
We are only at 9 players now with Karaban undecided which would make 10 if he comes back. We normally have 12 scholarship players at least so expect 2 or 3 if Karaban leaves.

Not sure Hurley is going to make that mistake again and he's said as much. You can hope for it, work at it, but you can't 100% expect it.

I doubt that is happening. He is either starting at PF or SF depending on who we add. He didn’t come back to be a bench player. He just has to be more aggressive on offense but he has the toold. he won’t be deferring to anyone this year like he did this past year. If Karban stays he is starting at SF and we bring in Smith for backup PG(which we need) we will probably fill out the roster with 3rd string Center.

Agreed. In general, PG is a position you need to shore up from a backup perspective moreso than forward. We learned that the hard way this year, and I think that's a big reason we're going after Smith. We were spoiled the previous two years with Hass a backup, plus a 3 (Dre and then Steph) who could handle the ball and play the 1 in a pinch.

If AK goes, we need another starting quality forward. If he stays, he obviously starts, and from my perspective there will be a competition between J-Stew and Mullins as the starting 3. They both have their strengths and weaknesses and are very different players, and whoever doesn't start will still play a ton. Ross will be in the role of the 2nd forward off the bench and will need to earn his minutes (basically the same as this past season).

I also think we need to bring in another 5 man. I like Reibe, but he seems to be more of a 4/5 who likes to drift to the perimeter a bit, and as a freshman will probably need to add strength. Would love to bring in a big bodied 5 man to play 10-12 minutes a game and at least be a physical presence.

I would expect Stewart to start. I'd expect to see all of our incoming freshman playing, the question is who will remain standing when we hit conference play and who gets the bulk of minutes - that's clearly TBD.

We need PG & C backups, possibly a starting quality F.

Solo Ball improving his combo guard game to be a greater threat as a passer, penetrator, and shooter will be a major offseason key. He should watch a lot of Cam Spencer and infuse that with his greater athleticism.

In the least shocking news ever:
Goose poops. But not exactly shocking, like you said, considering Pitino was trying to recruit him after March 2023 when he took over the head coaching at St. John's. Word is when Rick was doing this Jackson was a heavy lean towards UNC, but Rick still gave them a scare.

Johnnies better take advantage of this Pitino window. Once it’s over it’s really over.

Why does this feel like a Kansas redux? We'll see how it works out.
Not sure like Kansas who seem to take any top rated player whether it fits or not. Slick Rick is sticking with a physical, athletic type. Problem is will they have enough shooting?

He had all transfers this past season and they ran away with the Big East and got a 2 seed. They spit the bit in the tournament but it worked out pretty damn well for them. They'll be more talented this upcoming season.
If having a very good conference season is the objective, ths approach will be sufficient. If he wants to see the second weekend or later in the tournament, I'm not sure it can be done with a rstercof rental players.

That's always been the question with Pitino's teams. The 2013 Louisville team that had their championship vacated was 214th in the country in 3 point percentage (33%)

Doesn't mean it will work out exactly the same for them. Bryce Hopkins is a total wild card. They lost two first team players and the conference player of the year. Not sure how they will be more talented.

I think they are a top 20 team pre season next year and should be picked to finish in the top 3 of the league. But I don't think they are going 31-5 again.
