Transfer Portal Starting to Load

You raise a good point about setting NIL culture. If you set one based on players going because it’s where the biggest bag is to be had, you set a “me first” culture (Kansas). It’s not surprising Self is blowing up that hot mess of a situation.

If you set one where you’ll be paid fairly, but the reason you come is to be part of something, a greater good, a community, development and the chance to win, you attract a very different type of kid. The right kind.
That model wasn't working but most of the KU roster is transferring out or has no eligibility. The one really good player, Bidunga, is in the portal. So how do you rebuild the culture?

They lost Udeh and Zuby by chasing Hunter and now lost Bidunga because he had to sit behind Hunter. Even though he'd start next year he wanted to start last year. The few hits they have had have been local kids. Mayo is from Lawrence and played with pride. Should have recruited him out of HS. Christian Braun, local kid. We didn't lose Clingan after he was a bench player, why? Local kid.

Smart coaches are going to start prioritizing kids who really want to be at the school. Whether transfers with more than a year left or HS kids.

Jayden Quaintance is really intriguing despite the ACL. Played for Bobby, youngest kid in college basketball and a beast.

Think he'd be uber expensive, even with the injury. Would give me weird Hopkins vibes where we're paying him to rehab and then who knows if he ever actually suits up before going pro.

Nobody talks about the downside of the transfer portal where you miss on a transfer and then you have to play/invest in this low ceiling product while not developing and possibly missing out altogether on the much higher ceiling recruit.

Kansas spent all that money on Hunter just to wreck their program. Could’ve developed the HS player on a rookie deal for the same impact.

The blend of how you do it is likely a work in progress for all coaches, Self has specifically been slow to the punch in understanding how to create a balanced and motivated roster in the portal.

Hurley definitely gets the big picture but got a little too wrapped up over indexing on a specific archetype in the afterglow of B2B. Silas is already a sign he’s making those adjustments.

But that PG (Darryn Peterson) they have next year is a beast - he dominated at the McDonald's AAmerican game. 6'5" guard. Kansas will be alright.

Thank you. Wow that is a lot of spots.
One less now.

Why stop now?

I absolutely want but can someone explain to me how this would work ? Assuming he wouldn’t be coming to be a bench piece. If that’s the case and he’s one of the 3/4, my question is who between Mullins and Stew starts ? Obviously there is no guarantees what has been promised but I feel like consensus here is that Mullins is an obvious starter but then I’d also think Stew had to have at least been given some sort of a promise of a starting role or starters minutes at least, no? This is all with the assumption that Reed is returning obviously.

We won 2 national titles without developing any players. Lol. What is going on with this place?

I’m sorry you fell in love with Nowell and it didn’t work out. But you’ll fall in love again.
If you are claiming that I am insinuating that there was no development going on the last 2 years you are wrong.
If you are claiming that there was zero development in winning 2 NDs you are wrong.

It's hard to decipher questionable grammaticism.

I am saying player development is essential in coaching. Thats why I stressed that point RuffRuff stated.
Many BYers are saying that the future is to take seasoned veterans via the portal vs developing players via recruitment of HS players. I don't agree with that at all.

Don't apologize how I feel about Nowell - he'll be more than just fine, believe me.

My guess is Stew would start but also be the primary backup at the four getting 10ish minutes there, which would leave a lot of minutes for Mullins at the 2/3.
