I agree regarding baseline talent evaluation. I watched a ton of Isaiah Abraham and Jaden Ross high school games. Abraham was a better shooter and has a stronger body, although they're pretty much the same height. It seems to me like certain guys were not encouraged or backed to squeeze out every ounce of their potential and aggressively take their share of the light as much as others were.

Tarris Reed, clearly a better player than Samson Johnson, but was relegated to a bench role all year and his deficiencies were constantly highlighted while Samson's deficiencies were rarely ever called into question. It was the same for Jaden Ross vs Jaylin Stewart and, to a similar degree, Liam McNeeley vs Jaylin Stewart.

He hasn't JUST "given him 3 minutes" and that's it, if that was true, you'd be correct.

I'm not sure what this says or what it means. You said to the other poster it seemed like he never played ball before, and I was commenting on that.

I've given plenty of my insight, whether you agree with it or not is up to you.




All of this, and I really like Ross and want him to stay. And think he has potential. I just don't believe that the only thing standing in his way to stardom was 25 minutes a game this year, unfettered, to just see if he has that potential. That's not it works ANYWHERE.
 
This place can be mind boggling at times.

Yes, there have been seasons in the past for our men's basketball team where a kid was able to see the court, develop his game and build his confidence. This has not been a possibility the past couple of seasons. This shouldn't need to be pointed out to anyone who follows the program.

It's also not an expected thing. If that happened in the past, it happened for whatever reason, and it was what it was, and the kid either developed or didn't. The same thing is happening here, he's just not getting unfettered access to court time. It's disingenuous to suggest that he's not being evaluated or given a chance because he's not playing a ton - I'm suggesting clearly that means he IS being evaluated and it's CLEAR he's not ready for more (hasn't been YET).

Then why does Hurley come out and say he should get more court time? Thats the mind boggling part.

Everything we’ve seen and heard from his practice time has said he’s earned it.

its about minutes and direction. I’ve regerred to the Jeremy lamb article about the direction Kemba and Calhoun gave him. For Ross to play so many games and only take 2-3 shots is something that’s fixed with simply telling him to be more aggressive which never happened.

It’s one thing to say I believe you can be good so go and give minutes. It’s another to get on somebody to take shots and be aggressive because how much you believe in them.

It’s so obviously a play to keep Ross hungry and more importantly keep him in the program.

It would definitely fix our athletic deficiencies getting these 2 guys. Imagine a starting line up of PG Demary, SG Ball, SF Luis, PF Stewart and C Reed. Wow that is really talented team and would allow our Freshmen to develop behind them.

well, then he's the Don Shula of Division I basketball. Shula was enormously successful, but when he retired he said he had had it. For most of his career, the coaching staff controlled the team. Towards the end of his career, every player was in it for themselves.

Yeah, the statement from Laranaga of all people deserved a huge eye roll. He had a long stretch of mediocrity and then used NIL and hired guns to really turn that program around the year before their F4 run. Now you’ve got a program where everyone either came there for the bag or got recruited and is now bitter that their teammates are making 10x what they are.

You raise a good point about setting NIL culture. If you set one based on players going because it’s where the biggest bag is to be had, you set a “me first” culture (Kansas). It’s not surprising Self is blowing up that hot mess of a situation.

If you set one where you’ll be paid fairly, but the reason you come is to be part of something, a greater good, a community, development and the chance to win, you attract a very different type of kid. The right kind.

The kid is a beast - just not sure how he would fit in.

This has to be Bobby’s last year at ASU. Nothing seems to be going right for him.
 
I like Flory Bidunga as a PF / C to interchange with Reibe and Reed. Some SEC school is probably gonna drop a giant bag for him though.
