Transfer Portal Starting to Load

We'll need more than a pg

It will be telling how our staff feels about Adams/Furphy/Mullins based on how aggressively we pursue 2/3s in the portal. We have enough bodies to cover the wings between them and Solo. But they may not be sold on everyone contributing right away.

A guy I know Hurley and crew recruited, I think would be an excellent fit at the 4 Taylor Bol Bowen is in the portal 6’10 athlete went for 8ppg 5.2 rpg 1.5 blocks while shooting 41.4% from 3pt on 70 attempts.

Only saw him once in person, but he was absolutely terrible in the NEPSAC AAA Final a couple years ago. Didn't play very hard either. Hopefully he's improved

We obviously need a PG but we also are in desperate need of a Guard/Wing that can consistently get to the rack. Not sure our Freshman guys have that in them at the College level just yet.

I think they made the mistake of banking on young guys developing last season. If I've learned nothing it's that you always bring in more talent. The cream will rise. If Adams and Furphy(Im assuming Mullins will produce) demand 't, playing time over a guy like Lindsay then they'll play and we'll be even deeper. If they dont, well then at least we have a lindsay to go to lol

One advantage we have this year is to work the portal in front of all these other programs still playing.
Don't think for a second that they aren't working the portal. They've been working it for months.

By they, I mean schools that have not yet been eliminated.

This. Going to need a starting PG, reserve combo guard, 3 and D wing, and starting 4 man. Here’s what I think that looks like:

PG: Transfer/Transfer
SG: Ball/Adams
SF: Mullins/Furphy
PF: Transfer/Transfer
C: Reed/Reibe

They’ll need a PG, a CG and a 4, at minimum.

I don’t think what we do in portal indicates how Dan Hurley feels about frosh at all, perhaps the class year in portal he goes after, maybe. You cannot win with freshman given lack of physical maturity. They are generally supplemental.

I don’t think Dan Hurley will ever go into another season feeling depleted of experienced guards again. Need an even distribution of wings and guards, with experience.

Needs to balance some classes too.

If the people you are competing with have more than you, things aren't equal and in 99% of the cases you will lose.

Good thing is we have Hurley who can get the most out of guys.

Wow, where do we begin on this???????????????????????????????????
2 straight rings and just took #1 seed to the brink. Yeah that guy stinks!

CG would be best. Don’t need a true point.

Either way, we need size across the board going forward.

We absolutely need a point guard. This season was a mess because of our point guard situation (our point guard graduates) and we can't ever let that happen again. We need a few things but a big proven point guard is #1 need.

We are going to have to ante up to retain a lefty shooter.

Good thing is we have Hurley who can get the most out of guys. Just go through and look at the top portal guys last year, a lot of them weren’t even that good or worth the price they got. Hope is UConn gets one stud & finds quality that isn’t necessarily “top transfer” type players. I believe in the staff and their ability to do that. Does really speak to the urgency of getting into a power conference & hopefully that day comes soon. The whole structure of college athletics is silly right now, no other pro sports leagues operate in this manner. But we have to do what we have to do in order to compete.
Exhibit one: The 2024-25 Kansas Jayhawks

I think Stew should be good enough to start with the right offseason. He showed some very good growth in season, especially defensively.
D is my concern with him. If Ball, Mullins, Stew, Reed are all starting we’ll have an even worse defensive team than this year.

So much so that I’m not opposed to bringing in a big athletic PF that can play elite D even if they can’t stretch the floor eg Malik R. Our Offense can take a step back and still be good enough but the D needs to take a few steps forward.

Auburn and Houston both start 2 bigs that don’t really stretch the floor compared to a guy like AK.

Every time I see someone say Stew got better defensively, I wonder what team they were watching. He needs to work on his D. It was just a couple games ago he got faked so badly in the lane that he reminded me of Kemba "breaking" McGhee's ankle. It seems like he has the athleticism, but maybe not the desire to play D.
Any player UConn looks to bring in has to be slightly above average defensively at the minimum. We saw yesterday how key defense is to what UConn does. For the point guard I would value defense and breaking down a defender on O over other metrics like 3 pt shooting. This team played much better, including in the 2nd half yesterday, when Hass was aggressive in getting by his man. We need someone to create space by drawing defenders.
