Transfer Portal Starting to Load

You know who else was overmatched? Hawkins. Couldn't dribble the ball. Couldn't defend a traffic cone. Missed most of his shots except for one game. But Hurley kept throwing him out there mostly because we didn't have anybody else. By the end of the year he could dribble a little without bouncing it off his feet, his defense was almost adequate and his shooing touch came back.

The staff isn't infallible. I think this year in particular, the chase to "threepeat" warped what should really have been a year focused on developing the sophomores and freshmen.
I could not disagree with this more. The staff should be putting out the best players to help us win every game, and that's what they did. Not playing your best options is how you actually lose the locker room like some people here are claiming Dan Hurley did this year

I don’t think the coaches pitch waiting your turn. It seems like they pitch earning playing time.

Which is probably why they get upset with the Mahaney situation and get outspoken about it.
I mentioned earning playing time right in the message you responded to. Ironic since one of your messages above is "reading comprehension." I'm done. I have things to do and don't have any more time for whatever this is. I honestly don't know why anyone would bother to continue this dialogue with you. Reasonable answers to your questions have been presented yet you choose to reach for the unlikely reasons like Hurley purposely plays inferior players or he can't or won't play and develop freshman. If that's what you really think I think you not only won't find a consensus on here, but you will find that you are in the extreme minority.

You mean like starting Samson Johnson over Reed all year?

Not worth it anymore. Wouldn't even bother anymore. It's futile.

I said all year I would have started Reed over Johnson, but Reed also played more minutes so I didn't really care too much since it worked out
Do you think Reed would be on the fence about returning if after his performance in Maui Hurley investing in him being one of our stars?

Instead of playing these mind games of him not being consistent enough while simultaneously starting a guy who couldn’t grab a rebound.

Yes, 100%

I'm afraid of the football league $ out there taking players we dont want to lose. Said it about 15 pages ago. The nil offers Im hearing are bonkers

In this day of the portal, there's no guarantee if you play your young players they will even return. You may be developing them for someone else.
Pitino said that as well.

Olander started then came out quickly and others played more minutes. I'm originally from Trumbull so I remember Harold Jensen in high school. His freshman year when they beat GTown in the championship game, he played more minutes than the nominal starter and upperclassman Dwight Wilbur. Coaches do this all the time for a variety of reasons.

Can someone explain to me how this House v. NCAA settlement actually works. From my understanding there will be 20.5 million in revenue sharing starting now for the upcoming year which will increase in subsequent years and back pay to former athletes who didn't benefit from NIL. How much money will former athletes get? How is it determined what they should've gotten and will now get? This applies to every D1 athlete or only athletes in revenue generating sports? How far back does it go?

Did you see Nowell when he was given playing time this past season? The best pass he threw was one right in the opponent's hands.

There were about a half dozen things going on that you know nothing about. Of greater importance, you're jumping to a conclusion (that because Mahaney seriously underperformed, Nowell had to be a better option) based entirely on conjecture.

Maui hurt this team on many levels, one of them being that it destroyed the confidence that a few players had in their abilities and in some cases things continued to deteriorate. There were also injuries in play, some kept people out of games, others just limited some players slightly.

I can assure you that if any player demonstrated that he belonged on the floor for serious minutes, he would have received serious minutes.
I do love some good hyperbole, but Nowell did flash some passing skills…but also turned it over.

Jensen was for Nova under Rollie Massamino for those who are young or don't remember. Didn't specify in original message.

Also, where does all this money come from? Pretty much every athletic department ever spends more than the revenue they bring in every year. Even with the monster TV contracts in the Big 10 and SEC the overwhelming majority still spend more than they bring in.

Yeah, "revenue sharing" to me sounds like everyone is going to have to increase their subsidies.

I'm sure Pitino had no contact with him before the portal opened (cough, cough).
Just guessing that Rick didn't get a chance to meet Dent while he was in Cleveland watching his son coach his last game for New Mexico this past weekend. Maybe Xavier can't match StJ NIL bag. One Pitino or the other

As someone who was a huge proponent of AN getting more PT early in the year, when it came to conference competition, don’t really know how anyone could watch and think he should have been playing more. He clearly was not ready and opponents smelled blood in the water whenever he was in. Maybe that’s to do with missing so much time with injury but whatever the case, it’s just a ridiculous take.

Please, just stop.

If the reason we may lose a kid who shared minutes at a position is because he wasn't a starter we wouldn't have to worry about the possibility of losing someone else (who I'm confident everyone on this board views as very important). There are vultures out there who will make offers that will be very difficult for some kids to reject.

Believe it or not, prior to actual games, Mahaney was among the top three or four players. Once he started getting manhandled in games his confidence cratered.

Nobody was handed anything and nobody was overlooked. While the results weren't what we were hoping for, the staff made every decision with the belief that it was the best move for immediate and future success.
