In minor transfer news, we have a player entering his SEVENTH year of D1 college basketball:

DeJuan Clayton, who played his grad transfer year at Hartford last year, will play at Cal in the 22-23 season.

How is Clayton playing seven years of college basketball?

16-17: Freshman year at Coppin State
17-18: Sophomore year: played 6 games (injury)
18-19: RS Sophomore year at Coppin State
19-20: RS Junior year at Coppin State
20-21: RS Senior year at Coppin State
21-22: Covid extra year at Hartford, played just 2 games
22-23: Medical hardship waiver year at Cal

Clayton turned 25 two weeks ago.

Clayton is 5th all-time in Coppin State's record books for career points (1518) and 3rd in assists (420).

What a journey for him and with his history, an easy guy to root for success in the P12.

It's official, Hunter to Texas:

Personally, I find Texas' roster kinda weird. The main weakness for Timmy Allen (26.7%), Tyrese Hunter (27.4%), Dillon Mitchell and Arterio Morris (their top two recruits) is their outside shooting. Marcus Carr and Sir'Jabari Rice have a career 33.6 3p%, Dylan Disu has a career 30.4 3p%, Bishop doesn't shoot threes...

Their perimeter D should be excellent and I picture a lot of fun transition offense, but a team with that poor level of shooters really limits their ceiling. They'll stink in the halfcourt and there's a good chance they will shoot under 30% as a team. I'm selling.

This was announced almost a month ago but former UConn target and St. Joseph guard Taelon Martin will play for Eastern Kentucky next season.

I've casually followed EKU since A.W Hamilton took over the program, mostly rooting for him after beating cancer and also their super fast tempo and turnover-heavy D is fun to watch. EKU has ranked in the top-50 in offensive tempo in every year of Hamilton's four year tenure, so I'm sure Martin will have fun playing in his system. They've also ranked in the top-30 in generating TO% in each of those seasons.

Martin averaged 10.6 ppg at St. Joseph's. Last year, he played at Southern Idaho (others will know better, but IIRC, one of the better JUCO teams in the nation) and averaged 12.3p, 5.7r, 1.9a, 1.3s, 33.3 3p% and 50.0 2p%.

Martin had three other D1 offers entering this upcoming season (Coastal Carolina, Siena, Southern Indiana). It's been a long road for Martin and I'm rooting for him next season!

This is cool, glad he made his way to D1 in the end.

Anyone happen to know of any (non walk-on) players/transfers that we are in the mix for? Or perhaps a 2023 reclass? Things have been very quiet, I haven’t seen us connected to any transfers recently.

I'm in awe of Matt McMahon's roster building in what, six weeks?

He entered his job with (I think) no committed players and now has an 11 man roster:
  • Retained two players were previously in the portal
    • Mwani Wilkinson, 6'5 206 JR, former #67
    • Justice Williams, 6'3 170 SO, former #33
  • His three best players from Murray State
    • KJ Williams 6’10 245 GR from Murray State, 18p, 8.4r, 1.4s, 32.7 3p% in 29.1 mpg
    • Trae Hannibal 6’2 220 SR from Murray State, 9.2p, 5.1r, 2.5a.
    • Juice Hill, 6’0 170 SR from Murray State, 13.4p, 5.1a
  • Two transfers from high-major programs
    • Cam Hayes 6’3 180 JR from NC State, 7.0p, 2.1a, 35 fg%, former #67
    • Derek Fountain 6’9 220 JR, from Mississippi State, career 3.4p, 2.3r, 50 2p%, 33.3 3p% in 13.3 mpg former #207
  • One mid-major transfer with multiple years of eligibility
    • Kendal Coleman, 6'8 220 SO from NW State, 15.4p, 10.1r, 1.3b
  • Three-man '22 class
    • Tyrell Ward, #35, Xavier decommit
    • Jalen Reed, #71, Louisville decommit
    • Cornelious Williams, was his top recruit from Murray State, 48th ranked center, 16 D1 offers
LSU was one of my top-five least favorite teams, but with McMahon in the mix, I'm excited to see what they do in 22-23. From what I read about him, he seems like a great guy.

My sympathy to Murray State.
