Top 10 Players in Women’s College Basketball History

No Caitlin Clark?
Whoever wrote this list probably just wanted to stir the pot.

When looking at college only career, the players who have a legitimate case for best of all time IMO are: Clark, Holdsclaw (also absent from the list), Moore, Stewart, Taurasi, and Cheryl Miller. Not necessarily in that order--but you can make a case for any of those 6 as the best of all time depending on what you value or who you cheer for).

After that I'd put Parker pretty safely at 7, Griner at 8, Swoopes at 9 and one of Sabrina, Wilson, Boston and Bueckers to round out the top 10.

I don't think Bird/Paris/Augustus stack up with those 13 when looking at collegiate career only.

I like Boston but no way does she belong in the top ten of college players! I have to question whether any of her, Sabrina, or Wilson compare favorably with Paige. Clearly, Wilson has separated herself in the W but we’re only talking college. Jmo, of course.

Almost an impossible task. Just too many variables. If Delle Donne stayed at UCONN someone would be saying why isn’t she on the list. But picking one would be easier than picking 10 in my opinion. And the winner is…Cheryl Miller.

This list looks like it was penned by a Husky fan. Winning a championship means you were on a good team, not the best player of all time. My list is based on who changed the game and that would be CC number 1 followed by DT number 2. After those two you have great players but not players that changed the way the game is played.

Now I will add that basketball is a team sport and for that I understand some of the logic behind the picks. In the end though I do think if a great player goes to a good school but not one of the basketball factories they might not win it all.

TBH…what list doesn’t stir a pot? :)

In case anyone has forgotten, even though she coach's one of our opponents, Kim Mulkey was the point guard for Lousanna Tech, a very small school compared to others like Southern Cal, when they won the National Championship. She was one of the first players to appear on national television and to this day is probably one of the two or three best point guards I've been able to watch.

Caitlin Clark is no Breanna Stewart, nor is she a DT, nor is she a Maya Moore. And, for that matter, they haven't figured out what to do with Paige Bueckers, who will undoubtedly go down as one of the best women's basketball players of all time. As good as Augustus Siemone was, I don't think that she was top ten. Chamique Holdsclaw definitely should have been on the list.

My List:

1. Diana Taurasi
2. Breanna Stewart
3. Maya Moore
4. Cheryl Miller
5. Sheryl Swoopes
6. Candace Parker
7. Brittney Griner
8. Paige Bueckers
9. Caitlin Clark
10. Courtney Paris

I do not use total points scored or PPG averages to determine spots on the list. A lot of the time, the amount of points scored is defined by several factors, who is the point guard? Who is the first scoring option on the team? Are there other options on the team that prevent a player from dominating the offensive side of the ball? Is the player good both defensively and offensively? Does she make other players around her better?

Both Augustus Simeone and Sue Bird drop out of the top ten, making room for Paige Bueckers and Caitlin Clark

Boston was a 4x All American, 3x 1st Team All American, 2x Naismith DPOY, Final Four MOP and NPOY. Won a title, 3 Final Fours and likely would’ve been strongly in contention for a 2nd title (and likely a lock for a 4th Final Four) if not for covid. Head to head her team beat Paige’s for a title in 2022.

Wilson has a similar resume to Boston. Ionescu was a 2x NPOY and elevated a no-name Oregon program to greatness in 2020. Most felt Oregon/South Carolina were the clear front runners for a title that season but the tourney was canceled due to Covid.

Paige is great and has a stellar resume too—what about it makes you think she’s far ahead of the others?

And Kelsey Plum
Jackie had more PPG. Held the NCAA scoring record from about 2000 until about 2018. Almost everyone since then had more games. CC, who shall go nameless, did have more points per game. But Jackie is also in the women's hall of fame. Kelsey and CC, not yet.

Oopsie, I misread your post. I thought it read: "Ask Kelsey Plum". So, I 100% agree with you...

Where is Holdsclaw on your list?

I don't know who I would kick off, but Holdsclaw had a Jordan-esque step back mid-range jump shot. Even as a UConn fan who doesn't like anything orange, I have to say that step back was a thing of beauty. Paige is a little bit like that except it's more of a pull up, not a step back in traffic like Holdsclaw.

You are 100 percent right...it is a dilemma, how do I get her on the list of top 10 because she deserves to be there... Maybe given that Sherri Coale used to keep Courtney in the games so she could pad her stats and keep her double-double streak going, maybe I could replace Paris with Chamique...but it is hard to remove someone else to get her in there. Then I would have to insert Chamique at 7 right behind Parker and move everyone else down one.

What to do with Tamika Catchings, Jackie Stiles, Kelsey Plum, Augustus Siemone, Courtney Paris, Aliyah Boston, Lynette Woodard, Aja Wilson, Sabrina Ionescu, Sue Bird.

Not to have C.C. on the list then you have no list
This woman who was 2 x Naismith player of the year actually lead the nation in ppg and assist per game which nobody has ever done..she holds something like 45 records!
When Paige had her one great year C.C. tied her for National Freshman of the year
How many on the list were a great scorer and a terrific facilitator?
None other than Nancy Lieberman said Clark was the best passer in the world
I know there are a lot of Uconn fans that are Clark haters but come on now

What only 4 from UCONN?

This is total clickbait but the first three selections are accurate. Although I would swap Maya Moore (make her two) and Taursi (make her 3)

Courtney Paris and in my humble opinion Sue Bird are not top 10 players of all-time. Jefferson was way better than Bird. If I were looking for a point Guard it would be M.Jefferson.

If you look at college careers and pro careers, sometimes the results are different. I would drop Bird (though I love her) and Parker, because they played only 3 or so seasons. Both would be on my top-10 pro list. I would replace Parker with Holdsclaw (3 championships and 3,000+ points) on the college list.

Paris was a great college player (4x first-team All-American), so I include her, but I would have to add Clark and maybe Plum.

I'm not sure I'd include Seimone. Great, but maybe top 15.

I think Stewie, Diana, and Maya are no-brainers, though the order is debatable. I still think Maya was the greatest.

Some early players are worthy of consideration: Lieberman, Woodard, Meyers, Leslie.

So you added your clickbait to their clickbait? ;)

I love these comparisons. Dimaggio vs Mantle. Montana vs Brady. Ali vs Louis. Jordan vs Russell. Suffice it to say that we would take anyone of them any day of the year and be happy.

So to add to the clickbait, I'll nominate Pearl Moore for the list, the original. Linking to her wikipedia career and stats here, but her averages put everyone to shame, and with no 3 point shot available.
