I remember I was in disbelief when my dad first told me that girls played this half-court variant of basketball in his high school days (he is from a small town in south Texas).

It's eye opening how hugely popular girls' HS basketball was in certain pockets of the country even before the AIAW era. Unfortunately, it was in these pockets where the authorities were most recalcitrant in transitioning to 5 on 5. Iowa and Oklahoma would continue it into the 1990s. According to wikipedia:

"Beginning in 1958 the Office of Civil Rights started looking at banning six-on-six high school girls basketball.[1] It would take 37 years to phase it out.

• 1978: Texas[2][3]
• 1993: Iowa[4]
• 1995: Oklahoma[2][5]

Netball which is still played in most of the former British empire (girls sport) still carries on the 'specialized role' limited mobility of the old form of women's basketball.

I remember another coach that promised fans a NC before the season began. He did it once, failed to win and never again.

My sister was a decent athlete in high school. Of course in those days there were no girls teams. I got sick of listening to her complain loudly and often about having to play 6 girl basketball. "What are they worried about?" she would say, "That we might sweat"?
