C'mon, Nan - this numbers table doesn't wash for a kid who puts out a trick shot video on the Internet. Doty is erratic as hell. She's had a couple of good games each year (Oklahoma as a freshman and Duke this season), but it just doesn't merit risking games like the one on Monday against Notre Dame - 22 minutes, zero points. That was a killer.
.
Are you saying that Caroline's trick shot video proves something about her experience in real-game situations? Really?

My, such indignation!

Shock! Yes, putting out such a video says "Look at me! Look how great a shooter I am!" Actually, Caroline is. The problem is she can't deliver far too often in real game situations, so it's a kind of mirage.

Geno likes her because she's considered feisty. I understand that, but unfortunately she doesn't deliver that either far too often in games that matter.

Part Time Sub-Her
(With apologies to Stevie Wonder (Part Time Lover))

Sit down, don’t move, don’t gripe and moan,
we’ll take your scholly and send you home.
Don’t want nothing to be wrong - thus part-time Kelly.
The reason why you’re on the bench,
To let you know your O is stench.
You’ve got to be, our part time subber.
We’ll be subbing like a wres-t-ling tag team
(Bright idea? Dailey’s - in a dreammm).
We are striving for an NC so we’ll run.
With her on the bench, we’ll get it done?
And if this plan, leads to a T
We’ll only blame it on coach G,
Don’t want nothing to be wrong - thus part-time Kelly.
But if there's some emergency
That can’t be handled by CD,
Don’t want nothing to be wrong - thus FULL-TIME Kelly.
We’ll be undercover subbing on the run,
Annoying Tenn…oh, it’s so-o much fun.
If she’s not on D we’ll merely blink the lights
And sub in bigs, to-Shea’s delight.
Da, da…..
She’ll slip right in, she’ll slip right out
The refs won’t notice, it'll be a rout.
She’s got to be, our part time subber.
Da, da….
Nothing will be wrong with part time subher.
Nothing will be wrong with full time Faris.

Yes, when you fail, you start to doubt yourself. Then hesitation takes over. For a Freshman, I like the way that KML will miss a shot and come right back with another attempt. Reminds me of Larry Bird.
Me too. And did you notice against ND, when Stef just turned and fired with no hesitation, it went in about 90% of the time? There is too much hesitation on the part of a lot of players, which only seems to matter in games against good competition. Look at the ND games: no FGs down the stretch in either game.

I'd have to agree with your indignant response here Nan.. what does putting out a trick shot video, while she was injured and unable to even practice, have to do with her on-court experience? There's absolutely NO correlation whatsoever.. When Caroline is on the court, we turn the ball over less.. She takes care of the ball, the end. After stewing over it for a couple of days, I think that if Geno had told Caroline to shoot the ball more, Caroline would have shot the ball more on Monday night. Bottom line, aside from those 2 turnovers that 1) was caused by Kelly's fixing her hair and not paying attention and 2) a silly mistake, Caroline took/takes care of the ball. Without her and Kelly on the floor, our turnovers go up. I hope she comes out on Sunday and shoots every time she touches the ball

How does putting out a video where she is taking shots that could NEVER be taken in a game, shout that Wonk? Does McEntee also throw footballs into garbage cans when he's on the field? (.... this is just asking for a joke lol, but seriously)

There is little doubt that the plan against ND was to get the ball inside as much as possible. And it basically worked, except that SD was dragging over the last 10 minutes (for people who thought Kiah wasn't a good option, hello GA, Heather isn't exactly chopped liver to give SD a rest) and ND had adjusted to stop Tiff's drives to the hoop. Which meant that there needed to be some tactic to open ND up a bit and that is where KML comes in, but it also means that CD must have a part because KF is not a very good shooting option. And while it is great that CD isn't a turnover machine, but with KF on the floor. this team cannot afford to have 2 non-shooters in the backcourt in key games.

I truly believe that if an opposing coach was asked to take one player off of UConn, and put her on their team, DESPITE her shooting neurosis, I believe that person would very often be Kelly Faris.
I don't want Kelly to sit, but no, there ain't no way a coach is taking Kelly first before KML, Tiff or Bria. Many would even take the height of Stef (i.e. teams with small lineups).

Yes, they can the ND proved it is possible. And furthermore it has been possible all year given the record of this team. Is it better with four or or five absolutely but as long as a player can hit even 1 or 2 shots a game you can help keep teams honest.

The trick-shot video is just a kid having some fun. No "message" involved.

Actually, if a player only takes 1 or 2 shots a game, you can't keep a team honest. And if a player is a threat to make one or two shots a game, I don't agree at all that it keeps a team honest because even KF is a threat to make a few shots in most games and she is still left open plenty. Our opponents are thrilled if KF takes 5 or more shots a game because it means that someone who is a better option isn't shooting. But besides, as my post said, which dealt only with the ND game, it hurt quite a bit not to have CD as a true scoring threat when SD ran out of gas and Tiff was being managed pretty effectively. Obviously against most of our opposition, we can get away with a more limited arsenal, but against a bunch of even those teams, players in general have an easier time getting shots off.

I do agree with you on the significance of the video. Clearly a kid having fun and later saying that it took many takes for most of those "miracle" shots to go in.

And as I noted earlier Caroline only played 6 minutes in the second half and KML who was fresh because she road the bench in foul trouble played in that slot as the ND defense clamped down on both Tiff and Stef. KML scored 10 points so we had production from that spot. Geno got exactly what he needed from CD. We are not talking about someone playing 35 minutes a game or a team playing 35 minutes a game with three scorers on the floor. Geno plays Caroline about 18-20 minutes per game unless absolutely necessary like during the 1st half against ND. Caroline is more than capable of taking and making shots. If and when ignored she regularly makes teams pay. For that reason opponent defenses always account for her on the floor. That is why Stef was open in the middle, Muffet said they decided not to double team her to cover the perimeter better, including Caroline. Clearly, ND thought that Caroline was a scoring threat which is different from her taking shots instead of the better shots that were available. That external coverage, also, produced the room for Tiff to attack the basket.

Oh, there's many ways an opposing coach would take Kelly first. The defense, the hustle, the USUALLY brilliant passes, the defense, the anticipation. I sentence you to just ONE game of Kelly as the opponent. Meyers 7, that should do it, but i bet you won't admit it. :)

When Kelly has the ball, opponents play her to pass making it harder for any teammates to get open for easy shots. Thus she hurts the team in that respect. Yes Kelly hustles, but brilliant passes, please. She throws the ball away quite frequently. Her defense is good, but she is not a lock down defender. She's a good defender.

Obviously you have some kind of "in" that you know what Geno is saying to the team. Could you please tell us when he said someone on the team is the worst playerhe's ever seen?

No, I don't have an "in." But it is well known that Geno tends to break players down and then build them back up. Surely you cannot argue that statement. An example of the comments that he never gave Charles a hug until the end of her career. Yes, it worked with her in the long run. I was just wondering if this group possibly doesn't respond to his motivational tactics as well as past players and if he may need to use a different approach with them.

That's all.

It is well known this was never a true statement. It is basically a hyperbolic statement of what was always a myth.

Well, I will say that the perception, at least mine, is that Geno can be harsh, and brutally honest. Maybe that is not true. But some kids are softer with their feelings and need a softer approach.

I do not believe that Griner would have done well as a college player under Geno had he taken that approach with her.

Thing is that Geno tailors his approach to the personality and character of every individual player.

Griner may not agree:

"It was a great experience playing for Coach Auriemma because he is really passionate and he is a great coach,” Griner said. “He was working on my game, just getting big and just playing to my full ability."

I said as a college coach. I have a feeling that he treats potential Olympians a bit differently than he does a freshman at UCONN.

I don't know how many coaches would take Kelly over some of our other players; but as I pointed out a few weeks ago when explaining the idea of BRATS, Kelly is averaging double figure BRATS at 10.4 a game. She leads the Huskies in that department. Tif is second at 9.2 and Kaleena third at 7.3.

Both Caroline and Bria have been in shooting slumps over at least the last 10 games. During that stretch Caroline has shot at 26.5% and Bria at 37.1% overall. Caroline has shot the three at a somewhat better 32.4 (11-34) but she's averaged only 4.1 in those 10 games. Her averages for the year are 37.2% ; 36.4% and 5.7. Bria has shot the three at a scary 24.1% (13-54) and is averaging 11 a game. For the year her averages are 47.6% ; 33.8 %; and 13.7.
If Bria can't get out of her shooting slump, it's hard to see UConn going far in the post season.
