Thoughts about this recruiting class!

Agreed. I think Ormsby had a solid season. He just struggled to break down in open space when he had qb in sight. Luke lacked explosion. Never stopped working though.

We need to find a pass rusher. Badly.
Saw that, too. Soft ending for Luke after a lot of early promise.

Rather than say he's "half full" I think whaler11 is closer to "half full of it".☺️

You are one of the 5 most nonsensical posters here. You should probably settle down.

Ormsby and Zola had no chance last season.

A bit undersized playing against offenses torching their secondary with no depth to give them a blow.

They had to work just to stay onsides against high paced offenses taking 20 at a time.

oh someone get shizzle so we can do a poll. I like this idea

.-.
On the football board, it’s pretty easy to name the other 4.
I've got two front runners and i'll throw in the guy who shills his own product here for #3. not sure about a definitive four

Garland's gone, right?

Excellent point. Here are the young dudes. (Cincinnati Two Deep). I like our returning LBs and there are big numbers (beyond this two deep) at DB. Foley and Luke were very good college players. That is where we need to step up. But in our defense scheme, DL is the least critical position group.

DEFENSIVE BACK
41
Marshe Terry, RSo., 6-4, 212
32
Aaron Garland, RSo., 5-11, 193

This team could be considerably worse off defensively.

As far as the recruiting class, where was it ranked in the conference? There were 3 defensive players we were involved with that really intrigued. Lorenz Metz, Landon Woodson, and Jalen Rayam. We went 0 for 3, with two signing with conference foes.

I'm also concerned with the manner in which Lashlee left and the whole Corey Edsall thing. To go to the mattresses against the state for newbie assistant, let the kid go coach elsewhere for a few years. Yes, it's stupid and petty on the state's end as well but they didn't target Edsall with this, it was always in place.

The clock is ticking. Personally I look at this year as the last where we could afford to keep spinning our wheels. 2019 They gotta start getting it done on the field.

"Considerably worse?" Jesus. If that happens it might actually have entertainment value and attendance could go up. But I think we will be a more aggressive, better tackling defense and therefore better overall in terms of yardage and points allowed. My view is based largely if not entirely on wishful thinking.

It's hard to fathom, and I agree with you and Pal, familiarity should help. But to my untrained eye there was such a drop off from our 1st to our 2nd dlines it is scary. Same with the LBs, though not quite as pronounced...but you get the picture.

The DL and LB corps will be considerably weaker as a group than last year. And the DB's ... yes the DB's .... The DB's will be either experienced but too slow, or quite a bit faster but very inexperienced. Conclusions about the effectiveness of the defense this coming season are left to the reader.

.-.
Our defense can improve quite a bit if the secondary takes better angles and shows an interest in tackling. We gave up chunk plays often because a defender didn’t wrap up.

And I’ll say again we desperately need to find pass rushers. Don’t care if the are 199 pounds or 299 pounds. We had none last year.

Darrian Beavers was someone who popped out to me at times. He also showed his inexperience too. But when he blitzed I saw a very fast first step.

This will be a season of patience. There will be improvement that will not necessarily translate into more wins.
I'm not trying to be an ass, but how many times have we heard that we need to be patient in the last 20 years? Probably 15 or 16 of those years.

I agree with your post. I'm just a little weary of being patient.

Just once I’d like the football team to catch lightning in a bottle and far exceed expectations due to an unforeseen confluence of people and events. It would be such a welcome joy ride for a UConn sports fan this fall. I’m actually looking forward to the basketball coach search just so I can feel passionate about something.

There lived an old farmer who had worked on his fields for many, many years. One day, his horse bolted away. His neighbors dropped in to commiserate with him. “What awful luck,” they tut-tutted sympathetically, to which the farmer only replied, “We’ll see.”

Next morning, to everyone’s surprise, the horse returned, bringing with it three other wild horses. “How amazing is that!” they exclaimed in excitement. The old man replied, “We’ll see.”

A day later, the farmer’s son tried to mount one of the wild horses. He was thrown on the ground and broke his leg. Once more, the neighbors came by to express their sympathies for this stroke of bad luck. “We’ll see,” said the farmer politely.

The next day, the village had some visitors – military officers who had come with the purpose of drafting young men into the army. They passed over the farmer’s son, thanks to his broken leg. The neighbors patted the farmer on his back – how lucky he was to not have his son join the army! “We’ll see,” was all that the farmer said!

If you are losing 8 starters on the worst D in the nation, are you really losing anything?

The bookend to this is, "If last year's guys were so bad, why couldn't their backups who will be starters this year beat them out?"

Under PP and BD, a case could be made for coaching incompetence (favoring upperclassmen, making the easy evaluations on things like the weight room, attendance, and breakfast. I don't think you can make that argument with RE. If there were better guys, RE played them. Look no further than QB. During the pre-season he made one call and once BS showed he was better (took all of one quarter) he stuck with him when the last two guys would have said DP is the starter and will start next week.

People forget this is college football. Kids develop from year to year- I wouldn't look at anyone's previous production as they have an extra year in the weight room and also under this scheme. We still don't have all the pieces- but I bet the pieces fit better than last year's.

I don't care about last year- the D stunk. Yes, this is a rebuild- and I still like what Crocker's D did at Villanova. Given the right players, he can do that here as well. I like the DB's- yes, I like them. They are young but we have enough bodies to make things happen. I like the LB - last year's group was too slow for this D and people made Junior Joseph out to be the Alfred Fincher. Guess what, he wasn't. No knock on him, but the fleeter of foot linebackers will help out. Who was our best blitzing linebacker- Beavers? He was a true freshman playing the position for the first time.

From a D line perspective- if you want your linemen to hold off the O line so the LB's can make the play, then we have the pieces. If you want the D line to disrupt and make the play, you don't have the pieces.

Overall, more familiarity with the D will help them play faster. Crocker was limited because the defensive backfield and linebackers couldn;t do the fundamentals - tackle the ball carrier or receiver in front of you. They had to play guys 10 yards off. They couldn't blitz from wherever because of this. While I am not predicting a Top 75 defense here- I know it will be better than last year. Players will make names for themselves just like those that proceeded them. Time to stop the doom and gloom and trust the coaches.

I would say Travis Jones at nose, and Pierce DeVaughn and Guguak at the ends are three very good pieces. Yes, they are Freshman but better than we've had in a few years. Kevon Jones and Hunter Webb aren't bad at LB either. Yes, let's see how they turn out but I feel very good about our defensive recruiting.

Whatever we do, hopefully all of our DL kids get on campus as soon as they can to get acclamated to one another and the system a little quicker....
