Things you look for in Fall camp

By this logic Williams could play QB.

He’s absolutely a better runner than Williams. I get your point, though. What I’m trying to say is that he doesn’t need to have a great arm to be sorta successful

Ok, but you can move the ball better with a great/good passer who is an ok runner vs. a great/good runner who is an ok passer.

Seems like Pindell played an ok game against the only Div 1 undefeated team at there place last year. Had the team down only 28-17 early in the 4th qtr (before UCF rolled for 3 straight touchdowns). Ran for almost 100 yards and passed for about 200. Not Mike Vick type numbers but against a top team at their place, not bad. To discount this game when discussing his potential doesn't seem right.
A reasonably serious and hard working kid, some serious snap experience last year; expecting good play from him at QB. Pindell's UCF game stats were not that far off Quinton Flowers average game stats for USF of 53% completion %, 90 yards per game rushing and 240 yards per game passing.

.-.
Except this isn't a video game. My guess is that there were some very real and very human considerations that went into naming Pindell starter for the Holy Cross game.

And salvage the season? Even the most cautiously optimistic of UConn fan had to adjusted expectations after ECU and certainly after Memphis.
Our defense was too bad to salvage anything last year

I say let all five QB’s compete for the job THIS year and let the best QB earn the spot. If the kid from GA does get red shirted than at least try to get him in four games so he can get some experience, even if it’s mop up time.
I saw Washington and I really like his arm strength plus I still think is could be the starter if Pindell can’t get the job done

Pindell is what he is. Pretty good and a bridge to Washington/McAfee/kid from Georgia one of whom will be the starter next year. On a pretty good team Pindell looks like a solid qb. One a not so good team he doesn’t. Basically I don’t think he gets you to the next level but he is not bad. I always thought his choice last year was a combination of Lashlee wanting him, Edsall giving Lashlee what he wanted and Sherriffs being a Diaco guy who wasn’t really planning to come back.

After reading the below article it looks like your assessment is spot on. The first three weeks of August will be avery interesting. Will the practices be open to the public? Maybe we can get some “scouting reports” on the BY.

Good luck to all players and hoping for a successful and healthy season!

Top 10 AAC Newcomers to look out for in 2018

The biggest problem with the offense is that every year for the last six or seven years the coaching and or coordinators have changed so no continuity for the players what so ever. Tough to build a foundation in which to build from when the schemes and techniques change from season to season.

The Hail Mary sensation I got from that AAC Newcomer piece isn't enough to sell me on a true freshman as the starting QB. It's a terrible idea. I'll take Pindell and whoever else is ready. Give the young man a chance to adjust to a new situation.

The article did not say Krajewski will be the starting quarterback. In fact, it even states Pindell will probably start but that Krajewski should be ready to play if things go wrong. I still say QB2 is wide open and let the best man win. It’s refreshing knowing that we have good talent coming in this year.

My vibe is that Pindell will be better than last year. We already know he has the legs. I hope, and expect, to see further progression in maturity, leadership, decision making, and short/medium passing efficiency. I don't have much hope for an improved long ball. I hope he proves me wrong there.

With all of that, there is no getting around how young overall we will be this year. I do expect to see marked improvement week to week as the young pups mature. However, I agree with the author's premise that our youth means we will struggle in the win column. My over/under for the season is three. Even so, I expect the coaching staff has targeted a bowl bid as a realistic stretch goal. If that becomes mathematically impossible, we will go into developmental mode and see many true freshmen, especially with the new "play in four games and still retain your redshirt" rule. We will see what Krajewski's got after that, if we haven't already.

I'm actually a little excited to see how a few of our DL depth will pan out.. we've got tons of questions.. hopefully a few surprises:

Is AJ Garson still playing at 213lbs????
With the addition of transfer Fines, how's our DT rotation going to perform? Currently we'll have him, KMurphy, C Thomas coming off the redshirt, along with T Jones as a true frosh.. then you have guys like Okounam, J Atkins who've been here awhile now with walk ons Migliaccio and Steer and ooops I forgot to mention the 300 plus LB DT PWO Pharachesur (what a load.. hope he can truly play and somehow got lost in the shuffle).. how are these guys gonna contribute to prepare our front to be the best it can be? Can't forget the ends/OLBs who'll be a part of that DL - Freeborn and Brouse - guys that have been here awhile as well now.. You'd hope they can surprise folks... then you have the trio of frosh that I might be one of the few that are excited about in DeVaughn, Pace, and Uguak... Those 3 I'm hoping, can push the ones ahead of them to play better, and then, eventually take over on the ends.. we also should probably include Beavers in this group simply because we need a guy that can show he can get to the QB off the edge.. As of now, he's the only one that has shown that potential since the likes of Trevardo Williams..

IMO, we've got a little something up front on D. Question is, who's got that fight in the dog out of the group to step up and overachieve? We need some pride in the trenches when it counts late in games on 3rd down..

Question on the redshirt rules:

Can the team pick which games or does the window close before week 5? If the former is the case, I could see teams, especially those with young rosters (**ehem** UConn), playing roster games or saving an unexpected but quickly progressing player for games 9, 10, 11, and 12 and still maintaining a redshirt for the following season.

How does that work?

Would work wonders for us if we can do it the way you mention.. get that experience late in the season when they're better prepared and keep the redshirt...

Any four games during the course of the full season (including bowl games).

Less than a week out... Pre-season camp/practice begins w/ players reporting to campus on July 31st.
Can’t wait to see what this new team will look like on the field. Twenty-one new faces plus the three early enrollee’s will make for an interesting fall camp. The best thing is that these are all athletes that were recruited by Edsall. I think these kids will be able to contribute this year and should be able to produce a winning season in 2019.

Any word on whether or not we'll see/get a surprise transfer? Thought we might get a surprise veteran or 2 for Fall camp that could potentially give us a boost for this upcoming season.

I am foolishly optimistic Pindell will take another step forward.

Some things I am looking for:
  • Are the DBs physically stronger? Can they cut down on the YAC which was insanely high in some games last year?
  • Obviously DL rotation will be interesting to say the least; R. Fines, T. Jones, Caleb Thomas (its been mentioned on the yard that he was the best we had this past spring) and who else in the rotation?
  • Can TJ Gardner, who looked pretty darn athletic in high school, become a plus level LB? And can Beavers become “the” face of the LB core showing skills on all downs?
On DB's, with Terry moving over to LB, that leaves Coyle and Herring-Wilson from last year's crew, but that doesn't mean Terry can't move back to the backfield if they need him to. Keyshawn Paul, a true freshman, will see some pt.

On LB, two freshman, Hunter Webb and Kevon Jones will see some PT. On the DL, Pierce DeVaughn will definitely see PT, although I know the coaches would love to redshirt him, they can't afford to this Fall. The grad transfer from Miami will figure prominently in the defense.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed on the defense this year, depending on how the freshman, particularly the Jones boys and DeVaughn work out.

On offense looks like Peart really likes Zavier Scott. Obviously you want to be able to score a ton of points and win games. But I’ll take a nice running attack with Scott, O’Reilly and some Pindell runs to get first downs, chew up clock limit the opponents possessions and keep the defense fresh. We have some decent talent at WR but nothing to put fear in a secondary. If we can limit teams to 25 pts or less then we have a shot to be in games.
Oh and we can’t have silly holding penalties to put us behind the sticks. Gotta be disciplined and play pretty clean, physical football.
