The View From Section 241 (or QQ) — BC

Nice job. But it is time to put the BCU kept us out of the ACC myth to bed. Clemson and Florida State were the culprits. BCU has exactly zero influence in the conference. The basketball schools would have liked us but the football schools didn’t. BCU is neither.
I think Georgia Tech and Miami were two other “no” votes for us.

Fast forward 10 years(?) from now. The P2 has been finished and the rest of the FB playing world is in another category similar to IAA. You choose who else makes the cut. Does the SEC or B10 demote anyone(Rutgers, MD)? Our schedule includes Syracuse, Pitt, BC, West Virginia, Wake Forest, Temple etc. BE2.0. Great conference, great competition, just no road to NCAA Championship. UConn better off in 2035(?) than they were in 1995. 40 years to finish a short journey. Same as it ever was.
FWIW, Maryland won't be jettisoned for basically the same reason that Oregon won't be. While the Ducks are underwritten by Nike, the Terps major donor is Under Armor.
Watching the BC game, we see that New Balance funds the Thunder chickens. I've wondered for a while where UConn would be in the sponsorship pecking order if, around the turn of the Century, Starter in New Haven hadn't gone belly up. Starter was once the leading provider of merch...

Anyone who thinks that BCU wields any power to do anything in the ACC is delusional. DeFilipo taking credit for keeping UConn out is like the roster taking credit for the sunrise.
DeFilippo did not have the power to block UConn, but he actively lobbied against admission.

Here was his apology after making comments about ESPN and helping block UConn from the ACC, from The Boston Globe:

“Further, while I harbor some ill feelings toward the University of Connecticut regarding the lawsuit, depositions and derogatory comments from UConn officials when we announced our decision to join the ACC, it was inappropriate to express personal feelings that might have been construed as the position of Boston College or the Atlantic Coast Conference.

“I regret any misunderstandings or negative fallout my actions may have caused.’’

Ultimately, DeFilippo's comments towards ESPN and UConn resulted in him being forced out and being replaced by Bill Bates.

It was a much different scenario 20 years ago when the ACC invaded the Big East. Miami and travel partner BC lobbied to keep us out of the mix. DeFilipo admitted as much.

Today, yes BC wields little or no influence over the ACC, they have turned themselves into one of the weakest members athletically, although with a large tv market behind them. As a private Catholic college they never really fit the ACC mold. The ACC is now more worried about keeping their marquee teams intact. Obviously Clemson, FSU and MIami want out along with a few others who haven't made their long term goals public. When the GOR expires in 2030, the ACC will be blown up, re-shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic.

BCU never had any power. Never. Saying they blocked us over and over doesn't make it true. Miami has power yes. But BCU would have jumped on one foot if Miami said "Hop on one foot." NO ONE in the ACC gave a whit about anything BCU said or did. Not now. Not ever. Period. End of story. Am I getting through to you Mr. Beale?

Still have some Starter waterproof outerwear. Great stuff.

For what it's worth, which is probably nothing, reading this thread today riled me up a little, so I sent a message to the Chief Marketing & Brand Officer of the ACC (Marques Zak MZAK@THEACC.org). My suggestion was to replace BC and talked up what bringing in UConn, and all that it brings with it, would do for the marketing department. I mentioned the 18 National titles in hoops, 3 in the last 3 years, the most recent NBA and WNBA rookies of the year and what Husky Alum George Springer did last night to launch Toronto into the World Series. All great things a marketing department could use.
Probably won't help, but certainly can't hurt getting our name into that conference's conscience. I tried.

BC, specifically DeFilippo, was against UConn's addition to the ACC and they actively advocated against UConn to other ACC schools. Yes, they didn't have the power to "block" UConn, but if they had been an advocate for instead of an advocate against, things may have turned out differently.

The good news is that you have a leg to stand on when making those points. Short time ago was not possible. UConn is a marketers dream, so much positive going on. Can we continue to fund it(FB) at the level necessary to compete for the same kids that the ACC and B12 want?

Be very interested to know what NB commits to BC. It's hard for me to believe NB goes too deep with BC. That said, NB is a $7B revenue company and Nike about $50B. The comparison of BC to Oregon is....well.....who would you rather have promoting your brand?

And I hope you cced & bcced the Presidents & Chancellors of the XII. No need to contact Yormark. He was our advocate...

I was kind of shocked to see the N B signage as I had thought of BC as being in the back pocket of that other Mass. corp. (Rheebok)...

NB is starting to go the endorsement route a bit more with some superstar athletes like Ohtani.
Don’t blame BC for going that route given NB is up the road.
I’m sure if Nike or Addidas really wanted BC, they could outbid.
UConn is solidly a Nike school fortunately.

Reebok was Addidas but sold to Authentic Brands which is a massive collection of apparel brands. The Boston footprint isn’t nearly as big as it once was.
