Too true- I trust in HCJM- but my faith was shaken by what you describe, as well as a seeming absence of prep for the NCST qb's strengths and refusal/inability to adjust. That plus goofy discipline problems with stupid penalties and horrendous over-running/ tackling make me question the coaching far more than any talent differential.Nice synopsis. As much as it hurt us, I get the refs calling the penalty on the Rosa touchdown (yes it’s the rule) although, frankly, had it not been called, I doubt it would have resulted in NCSt’s coaches rushing the refs to howl about it.
And yes there was disparity in the penalty calls; which unfortunately happens all too often when the visiting team’s conference refs have no incentive to give the Independent any “special handling”.
But as for the other debacle of the night, the one most responsible for us losing the game, sorry, but there’s just no excuse (other than a coach’s stubborn philosophy) for not spying the QB after watching him scamper for multiple first downs—repeatedly—after we cut off his passing options. Fool us once, yup, twice, sure, three times,ok. But allowing him to scamper for first downs 14 times out of his 19 rushes? Wonder how long ND will wait before clamping down on him next week.
Hearing Mora say “we don’t spy” was the saddest comment of the night.
Spy? Didn’t need to spy the QB. How about the LBs make a play and DE’s don’t lose contain?Nice synopsis. Agree with BL here. NC State a better football team. We needed them to make a mistake to win. They didn’t. Now, we’ll bare what real expectations are. If UConn can’t score in Gia state, which gave up 35 and 400+ yards to Rhode island, then we got a problem. At what level? We’ve played one game this year, and we are not on the same level as NC State. Let’s see how things play out, but if your point is that our OC isn’t on a Top 40-ish level — well, neither is our program or our roster.
We can't be as sure of this as you are claiming.Us not spying the quarterback is part of the reason we lost. Thats a coaches error.
A voice of reason in the wilderness. The rule is very clearly defined and has zero leeway for defining intent. It defines a break of the rule as someone who is unopposed and dives into the endzone. That is literally what they have defined as demeaning or provoking ill will etc. It says zero about intent and rather clearly defines that the particular action that Rosa did is what they consider a break of the rule.
I think we are just kidding ourselves, if we thought we saw a smooth operating offense yesterday and adequate pressure on the QB.Agree with BL here. NC State a better football team. They did. They just got enough help from the stripes that it didn't matter. Don't get me wrong, I'm not filled with "we were robbed" outrage, but they got a little help when they needed it.Agree with BL here. NC State a better football team. We needed them to make a mistake to win.
I would have the stronger leg kickoff. Got to get the ball deeper. You have two kickers. Don’t need to redshirt them, but you have to get the ball into the end zone considering kickoff rules. Can’t allow returns.McFadden wasn't getting the ball into the endzone on kickoffs. Does anyone remember if he did two years ago, pre-ACL injury? Go with Ruelas on kickoffs?
He definitely was kicking his kickoffs longer than he did Thursday two years ago.McFadden wasn't getting the ball into the endzone on kickoffs. Does anyone remember if he did two years ago, pre-ACL injury? Go with Ruelas on kickoffs?
According to Football Database 43 Kickoffs, 9 Touchbacks, 1 OB, 23 returns. AVG 56.4 yards per kick.McFadden wasn't getting the ball into the endzone on kickoffs. Does anyone remember if he did two years ago, pre-ACL injury? Go with Ruelas on kickoffs?
I'm hoping the LB's learned a lot from Thursday and there are adjustments made to the LB scheme and cohesiveness amongst themselves and how they relate to the DL and secondary. A few modifications and we'll have a really tight D.Spy or no spy, still have to tackle.
Fagnano.Agree with BL. Here are my three positives, two negatives, and one question:
Three positives
Two negatives
- Awesome crowd and energy at the tailgate and during the game (after everyone arrived mid-way through the first quarter).
- Great opening drive.
- Running game looks solid.
One question
- Planning for their QB so we could contain him.
- Offensive game plan after the first series.
- Who starts at QB this week?

I really hope we take care of business Saturday, but if we don’t and see a similar performance from Fagnano I’d expect Roberson to start vs. FIU.I'd be shocked if you see a change after 1 week. If we have less than 100 yards passing 55 minutes in again Saturday, then ask me.
Not true. Look at the first play in the 3rd quarter from Auburn/UMass game. DB runs back an interception and flips into the end zone with no penalty called.Exactly. And the first td wasn’t even vaguely similar. He was diving for the pylon. Totally different Set of facts. I saw It last year at a Wesleyan game and same thing and a few years ago I think Arkansas. Same thing. It is the rule and is not a judgement call. It is like not getting the play off. You don’t snap the ball when the play clock expires it’s an automatic flag. It was a really stupid thing to do. Maybe he did it at Bristol Central and got away with it (it is a rule in high school too) because he was a star, but you won’t in college. I have never seen it in the NFL so I presume it is a rule there too.
Please. So if the LB’s weren’t making plays and the DE’s were losing contain, you want to simply let the QB run for first downs 14 times? Lets not call it a “Spy”—how about a “concentration” on him. Might that have —oh I don’t know —stopped a few of those freaking plays that were killing our ability to get them off the field on 4th down?Spy? Didn’t need to spy the QB. How about the LBs make a play and DE’s don’t lose contain?
I think Mora can run a defense. Saw no scheme issues. Issue was tackling.
Ruelas; 54 Kickoffs, 17 Touchbacks, 1 OB, 32 Returns, 60.5 AVG. yards per kick.According to Football Database 43 Kickoffs, 9 Touchbacks, 1 OB, 23 returns. AVG 56.4 yards per kick.
No it is not called every time. I was watching another game (Sorry can't remember which one) on Saturday and I saw a player do the same thing with no call, I sat there saying WTF.No excuse for the Rosa penalty. That flip into the end zone is called every single time at the college level and I’ve never seen it not called in high school. Every single time. It is a penalty and not a judgement call. Other than that an excellent analysis

Offensive Drive Review: UConn vs. NC State
A drive-by-drive walkthrough of UConn's offensive performance in the season opener.uconnhuskyfootball.substack.com
The six "OR"s at tight end was kind of funny. So a team’s official depth chart is tongue in cheek humor?
If we were "unopposed" we'd probably score on a majority of running plays.(e) An unopposed ball carrier obviously altering stride as he approaches the opponent’s goal line or diving into the end zone.
