The pros and cons of joining the Pac-12 for football only

JMO but Larry Scott has to go down as the worst conference commissioner in the history of college sports. The Pac 12 was among the crown jewels of the P5, but with each miscalculation, poor decision, and late reaction by Scott, its membership lost faith in the brand not just the man. What was once "The Conference of Champions" had members begging their way into ill-fitting conferences on the other side of the continent. Truely a remarkable failure.

St. Mary's and the WCC are more like the Atlantic 10, they would be ideal for each other. 24 member combined conference with 4 publics. 23 and 3 after UMass leaves. They would have a nice 20 member all private conference or just a scheduling alliance. The Atlantic 10 at 15 just seems too large for a mid-major conference which usually only gets 1 bid.

I imagine that if the PAC would be willing to take on an FCS upgrade they would look at a school that actually wants to upgrade (Sacramento St).

Sacramento would not fit well in an East Coast affiliate division, in the DC to Philly to NY to Boston mega market.

The PAC stays to the minimum 8 full football membership. The East Coast affiliate division delivers a conference championship, full schedule options, and increased PAC exposure in the Eastern media.

I actually like the concept. Not sure about Nova upgrading FB- you would know better than me on that front. Delaware and UMass are also currently unattractive to the PAC but if the rumors are true then Texas State is an option so maybe not too far fetched.

If you can get a “PAC East” division of:
UConn
Memphis
Tulane
USF
Temple
Army
Navy
and another +1, then I like the vision a lot.

But that also destroys the AAC. Not sure how strong that conference is at the moment. Didn’t they sign something when Memphis and Tulane were flirting with the PAC? Or maybe it was just symbolic, I don’t remember.

Come on, Nova never had an opportunity or offer ;) to join big time BCS/FBS football.....But they seem like they're heading in the right direction to upgrade with the facilities, 12,000 seat stadium and interest in place. LOL !

AAC really doesn’t factor. Low revenue. Poaching the AAC is the natural food chain.

Tulane and Memphis are stronger football programs at the start, but are 3rd tier programs without the benefit of a concentrated DC-Boston footprint and market. USF is the proposed exception for the Florida market / talent pool.

The plan would be to NOT play on campus. Most games at the Linc (NFL Eagles), with smaller games at the Philadelphia Union soccer stadium.

Do you know of any other programs that outgrew playing on campus?

There's a plan ? Thought the plan has been been over and over is to turn down better opportunities (for decades), despite what a few hopeful FBS stragglers.......continue to float into never never land.

Probably not really a plan, but rather options considered.

Nova does have a new AD. That might mean something or nothing.

Biggest rivals are Temple and Delaware.

There is nothing attractive left in the CAA (FCS) relationship.

I expect the strategy will continue to be “wait and see” unless something attractive developed. The following is attractive:

Army - Patriot (FB only)
Navy - Patriot (FB only)
UConn - Big East (FB only)
Nova - Big East (FB only)
Temple - Big East (FB only)
UMass - A10 (FB only)
Delaware - A10 (FB only)
USF - Big East (FB only)

The service academies are attractive peers. Nova and Navy have a very close relationship. Nova has produced many Navy Admirals and Marine Corps Generals.

Temple is the Philly Mayors Cup rival and would draw well for an annual conference game.

Delaware and Nova are traditional football rivals.

UConn is a Big East rival. UConn, UMass, Delaware, and Nova would all be programs with a FCS past.

“Wait and See” Nova is likely not the driving source for change. This would need to brew from UConn or another facilitator. Nova would be an important partner to UConn to bring Temple and USF into the Big East as an incentive to join for football, and to use “Big East” branding for football.

I like the Big East/ACC merger fantasy better, LOL ! But Uconn needs nothing from Nova in regards to FBS football just like USF or Temple for that matter. Uconn and USF are trying to punch up, while Nova cocked blocked Temple from the BE forever. So now you want them as friends?

But anyway enough about Nova, this thread is about Uconn and PAC, which Uconn has already turned down....#P-4 / Indy (or show me the money ! )

It would be Football only. Distance would be a factor 4 times a year. Getting on a plane and getting off would be the same. So an extra 2.5 to 4 hours per leg. Anyone know how many times the team flew last year. If the P12 has a championship game then we would fly a 5th time per year.

Nova was key to the official invite to Temple for 2012. As it turned out, the C-7 took the Big East for the reformed basketball conference and Temple stayed in what would become the AAC.

Taking the Nova detail out of the above plan (so it’s not a distraction to the discussion), would you rather be Indy or in a Big East division of the PAC? Assume $4M-$5M per team in the division to start, separate from the Big East payout.

Your conditions (almost a month ago)
  • PAC giving a "Uconn FB only partner”
  • a full TV share if they got say a $7-10 mil a year per school ( I doubt they get that number...still yet to be known)
  • Plus no exit fee..Ever !

This scenario:
  • not just one FB partner, but a full eastern division.
  • an Eastern Division share of ~$5M
  • No exit fee

If you’d take the first scenario, I guess you’d take the second.

Not even close...Any FBS conference/division, that would have Nova, Delaware and Umass in it and expect AAC schools to pay $27.5 mil a piece in exit fees to join them, along with Uconn, is both a fantasy and a non starter.

It would be great to get a Big East division to go along with the PAC. I'm a dreamer. Nice cross-country conference.

27 month notice is a $10M exit fee.

The 3 AAC teams that sought an earlier exit, 21 months, paid an $8M premium, and agreed to pay the premium over 10 years.

Temple and USF joining the Big East and PAC football at $5M per year would be a financial gain.

Just give the 27 months notice, and begin the transition with out of conference scheduling.

Do you think they could afford their exit fees? Not sold on Susquehanna though. They need a few more years to rebuild
