Having grown up in CT as a member of an Italian-American family, I have a great appreciation and love for a good pizza. But it appears that there is a serious problem with pizza and the #1 team in the nation that could derail UConn's opportunity to win championship #13. 😮

Evidently, after home games, UConn has pizza delivered to the locker room. Last night, at the start of his postgame presser, Geno went on a lengthy rant about how bad the pizza was after the game. Someone mentioned Pepe's, the legendary CT pizza joint, to which Geno lamented that, "this was not pizza from Pepe's."

As a lover of great Pizza, I became immediately concerned about how bad pizza might impact the team....lethargic play.....weakness from hunger.....lack of motivation. 🫨 The good news is that Geno is on the problem. He fully intends to remedy the situation, hopefully for the game on Monday against the Irish.

The nearest Pepe's to Storrs is in Manchester. That's about a 17 mile trip. Just put a little oven in the locker room to warm it up!

This could be the opportunity for some Husky a-pizza competition. Pepe's, Sally's or Modern should hurry to set up a permanent portable a-pizza coal-fired oven right in Storrs. This will definitely help get #13.

A-pizza favorites? The better half likes hers Margherita style. I like mine with mushrooms and sausage. What's yours?

I feel more like Peter Clemenza, “Leave the gun. Take the cannolis.”
I believe I read that Castalano, the actor who portrayed Clemenza, actually ad libbed the "take the cannolis" part. It's that ad lib. that makes that line perfect.

(Of course you and I realize that Clemenza probably would've said "take the cannoli" since cannoli is already plural.)

Mushroom, Italian sausage and eggplant. 🤩

I like an awful lot of them and my favorites very from time to time Margherita is very good as is a "grandma pizza" which more closely replicates homemade flavors. On the other end of the spectrum there are days that I love a good meat pie, with sausage meatballs, bacon, and ham. Not exactly the health conscious choice, but definitely delicious when you're in the mood.

Relatively recently in Taormina I had a mortadella/pistachio pizza that was surprisingly delicious. I've always thought of pizza as an Italian American thing, but the pizzas I've had in Italy have been amazing.

Pizza in Napoli is pretty special
We eat regularly at a modest joint near the railway station…La Cantina dei mille…my wife likes the seafood…another specialty...

Surprisingly, there’s good Chinese in the “hood” as well

Geno really ripped the pizza in Connecticut, and I mean ripped. This state is trying to get an idenity, so I think his comments were uncalled for. Mention it once, but he just went on and on. Not a cool thing to say about the state that pays his salary.

Some of these combinations are ... well ... not exactly Italiano. My Italian grandmother would be shaking her head. 😀 Wonder what Geno's favorite is.

Some time ago, probably the 80's or early 90's, I saw an article about the "Pizza Triangle": Hartford to the north, New London to the east, and New Haven (or maybe Bridgeport) to the west. Having grown up in the middle of that, it made sense to me. My little hometown of 8000 souls had a dozen or more pizza joints, always including Italian, Sicilian, and Greek.

Part of the culture shock of moving south was the lack of pizza. I knew I was in trouble when Pizza Hut was the best in town. Here in the burbs of DC it's a bit better, but 90% of the time, when I have pizza it's my own.

This is a crisis which will test the resolve and leadership of our entire coaching staff especially with the Notre Dame game coming. I for one am terrified at the consequences if this is allowed to continue. Thank goodness for Geno quickly identifying the counterfeit cuisine.

Really, posters responding to this serious post with their favorite ingredients!! Come on BY!
Any marketing people out there? Why doesn't Pepe's in Manchester deliver some large pies to the arena for the players after the game. And then advertise the heck out of it. "Serving the UConn Husky basketball teams in Storrs". Gotta spend $ to make money.
Here's a deal for you: Geno or some players do an ad for Pepe's in exchange for home game delivery service. Done.
