OT: The Pizza Capital of the World?

We lived there for a year and couldn’t believe the
pineapple preoccupation; yuck.
Have been through ChristChurch many times on my way in and out of McMurdo, wonderful city.
Some other folks on the flight out of McM recommended a pizza place that they couldn't rave enough about, don't remember the name right now. (Those folks were the 'hikey-campy, nuts 'n berries' type) I'll remember the name of the shop just as soon as I post this.
(Edit - Winnie Bagoes is the name and it looks like it is still there and doing well. I was there in the early 90s)

Have never seen such a bizarre combination of items listed as toppings, no 'normal' pizzas on the menu. The one that sticks in my memory was "Banana, walnut, and dill pickle" pizza. I honestly could not find anything that I thought I could eat and enjoy.

However, redemption was had when I discovered a tiny, out of the way place that served the absolute best seafood chowder I have ever had. As a native New Englander with Maine roots, that is a bold statement that I still stand behind. NZ, at least in my experience, does seafood very well, but that one specific pizza shop was much too 'creative' for my tastes.

I felt that way the one time I went to California Pizza Kitchen. I wound up getting barbecue chicken, which had barbecue sauce instead of normal sauce/paste, I don’t even remember if it had cheese. That was literally the closest thing to pizza I could find on the menu.

Geno really ripped the pizza in Connecticut, and I mean ripped. This state is trying to get an idenity, so I think his comments were uncalled for. Mention it once, but he just went on and on. Not a cool thing to say about the state that pays his salary.
Listen again, he "ripped" the pizza that was provided to the team and said he would get good pizza delivered and share it with press

I was born and raised in Hartford. There was a bakery in Hartford called lantieris on front street (now Columbus blvd) that made the very best sheet pan pizza. When they closed, Nardi bakery in South Windsor continued to make the same style pizza….absolutely the best. When they closed their doors, I unfortunately I haven’t found any pizza that comes even close to that Italian sheet pan pizza,

Geez, just make your own.View attachment 116039
Yup. Here in FL, the water is horrible, and no one knows how to make dough. Our nearest "good" za place is 30 mins away, so we put a pizza oven in the lanai, and I make dough using sourdough starter. Each of the 3 g-kids get to pick their toppings (pretty consistent - roni/black olive, pineapple/picked jalapeño/prosciutto, ital sausage) and the other 3 pies are whatever the adults are jonesing for that week. We've done mushrooms (cooked in duck fat), shrimp/red onion/alfredo sauce/spinach, potato/panchetta/gouda, five cheese, kitchen sink (whatever toppings are left for the last pie).

And for the kids, do a dessert pizza. We called one "Halloween Dumpster" and it was just melted chocolate bars of various types over dough.

Haha - amazingly, there's never a dough ball left as everyone wants to get in on the action.

Flo, RIP, from Sally's used to say her best pizza was the crushed garlic, no cheese. After we tried it my wife and most of our kids agree.
We are wintering in FL now and I understand what our old friends who have moved down here said, the pizza down here sucks.

Try their pepperoni pizza. It's pretty good

Pizza in Napoli is pretty special
We eat regularly at a modest joint near the railway station…La Cantina dei mille…my wife likes the seafood…another specialty...

Surprisingly, there’s good Chinese in the “hood” as well
Years ago, I was changing trains in the Naples train station, and I had a pizza in the food court, and it was the best slice I’ve ever had. And I grew up in the Bronx. I can’t imagine what it must be like in a real Naples pizza place.

We’re not talking (sour) grapes. We’re talking pizza.

Ct. may claim to be pizza nirvana, ask any pizza aficionado who has travel the land where the best pizza, the most diverse types, and tastiest pizza is found. There is one location where hot dogs and pizza are king, that is hands down, Chicago. The city may be a joke in many respects; however they know how to make a pie and dress up a dog. Yes, I have been to the place in Ct. that claims to be the 1st pizza place in the country and found it to be lacking to pizza in Chicago.
Chicago dogs are the bomb. Even with the relish that’s in a color that doesn’t appear in nature.

Chicago pizza is a contradiction in terms.

The term may be a contradiction for you. But the pizza is not. Nothing like picking up a piece of pie in Ct. or New York and having it flop over like a limp flaccid whatever. If you can't find pizza in Chicago that you love you are not human. You also have the best frozen pizza in the world from the Chicago area. Home Run Inn. It puts the Ct. parlor pizza to shame in comparison.

My fav of the NH pizza places was at Modern...
Spent the 1st 5 years of my life around the corner on Humphrey Street. Would walk with my older sisters to Modern to pick up pies to bring home. Back then it was a dark smokey place with the oven fire roaring in the back. Scared me as a kid, thought it was hell.

Connecticut: The epicenter for charred crust apizza and hot, butter-drenched lobster rolls. A substantial reason why I decided to never retire South!
And bagels, don't forget bagels. Hard to get a decent bagel south of the Mason-Dixon line. And Arthur Ave bread? Fuhgeddaboudit.

I can. On my last trip to Italy we started in Naples, and one of our stops was the restaurant reputed to be repeats it was invented. The pizza was great that decor was impressive, it had a lot of greenery so much that you wondered if you were inside or outside. Headed back to Italy in April, though not to Naples.
