The PAC12 announced it will be the third P5 conference to move to a 20 game conference basketball schedule starting in 2020-2021, joining the Big Ten (who just completed their first season with a 20 game conference basketball schedule) and the ACC (who will begin a 20 game conference basketball schedule in the upcoming 2019-2020 school year).
Since the Big 12 already plays a full round robin schedule at 18 games, that only leaves the SEC without a 20 game conference basketball schedule.
Plus, with schedule agreements in place like the Big Ten-ACC Challenge, Big 12-SEC Challenge, etc., that leaves fewer and fewer opportunities for non P5 schools to play P5 teams in the regular season.

Pac-12 schedule change 'brings more relevance' to conference slate starting in 2020-21 season
League's ruling, announced Thursday, could help boost Pac-12's profile nationally.tucson.com
And the logical implication to that, is that it is to the detriment of all the non P5 programs. The polls and the rating systems will prejudice themselves in favor of the P5 teams, with less and hard data (games against non P5) to force objectivity. One more nail in the coffin. Will the P5 split off? Is the NCAA basketball tournament as we know it a thing of the past? Could Nelson be right?![]()
I think most who have followed CR have believed that the P5 would eventually come for the hoops tournament. There's WAY to much money there to believe that they wouldn't. The NCAA is putting BILLIONS in their own pockets while paying out pennies.
The P5 just need to figure out how to do it so they don't get faced with lawsuits. If that means throwing crumbs to the G5 in terms of access & money like they do with football, then they will.
Yes , there will people who complain that the tournament as we know it, with the Cinderella aspect, is gone but, they won't care. To them it's just about how they can grab more cash
I agree. It's always all about the money. But the Cinderella story is always what made the tourney a great dramatic success. With a split -P5/G5- that dies.
Good luck having the AAC included with the P5 in basketball. Remember , in basketball, they call the P5 the P6 - and the Big East is the sixth conference.
They can't just have a P5 tournament. What's it going to be, 32 teams? Or, are they just going to let everyone in? That essentially makes the 30 game regular season nothing more than exhibition games.
When they do look to break away, they have to figure a way to to stay out of litigation. If they include the Big East & AAC they can essentially say that any team that has a chance to win is included. The other conferences will be fed some cash & the NIT becomes their tournament
Interesting concept. To take it a bit further, what would happen if the P5 schools withdraw all sports from the NCAA and form their own organization? Right now, with a few exceptions, you can put money on a P5 school winning that NC in most sports. What do you think? They can't just have a P5 tournament. What's it going to be, 32 teams? The American brings it to 87, 88 if you include Navy. Add BYU, and Boise St. and you are at 90. (I assume ND was already in the original count.)Big East is a power conference for basketball. That would take it up to 75 P6 basketball schools.
It makes more sense to separate football into its own structure separate from the existing conferences.
I like 16 football conferences of 7 teams each. Always play every team in conference, and rotate on a 4 year schedule to play a different conference each year. This maintains the rivalries that are established, makes the regular season more regional, and eliminates the clumsy conference title games.
12 teams make the playoffs: The 8 winners of the regular season conference match-ups plus 4 at large. The 4 top seeded regular season winners get byes. The 4 lower seeded regular season winners get a home field first round game, hosting the 4 at large entries. The second round gets played as Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, and Orange Bowls every year with the higher seeds getting their closest venue. Semis get played in Atlanta and Vegas. The Championship game moves around like the Super Bowl.
