The Official 2025 Boston Red Sox Thread

Which has nothing to do with Devers. Sox are very young, lots of talent but it hasn’t all matured yet. Couldn’t handle the injuries as well as an older, deeper team. It’s fine, I can’t complain because the future is so bright. Both teams have more talent than Toronto and yet they played better ball. Baseball is weird sometimes.
I was talking about you saying the Red Sox would have won the series with a healthy Anthony.

They would have. He had become their best position player. Probably would have without Duran’s error on Wednesday. As for Cole, the Sox wreck him, ERA vs Boston has been 4.9 of higher (much higher) four years in a row. But yes, the Yanks were better equipped to handle injuries. Go Jays!

One thing I don’t understand, why is Toronto not playing the #6 seed? Why do they set the bracket ahead of time instead of just having the high seed play the lowest remaining seed?

Love the excuses. Red Sox lost to the better team.

Wrong, Rafael Devers wrecks Cole.

Jhostynxon is pronounced "
JOES-tin-son" or "YOS-tin-son". Because of the difficult spelling, he is often nicknamed "The Password" by fans and teammates

I just saw details of the trade? What is your opinion?

Full trade details, per Jeff Passan Mark Feinsand:

Boston receives RHP Johan Oviedo, LHP Tyler Samaniego, and C Adonys Guzman.

Pittsburgh receives OF Jhostynxon Garcia and RHP Jesus Travieso.

I like Oviedo. The folks on my Pirates forums like him. To me, it seems more like the Pirates can't get what they want for Mitch Keller, so Oviedo was simply next to go as he has the least team control. I don't know a ton about Boston's rotation beyond Crochet and Sonny Grey, but I'd be surprised if Oviedo doesn't become your 4 or 5 and possible work up to 3. Don't see why he wouldn't be a regular 2+ WAR starter.

Samaniego was a surprise addition to the 40 man, indicating there was interest in teams nabbing him in Rule 5. He would've been in AAA for us this year, maybe pen depth by summer. Guzman had 5 PAs in A ball, so who knows what he'll be.

From what I've read about Garcia, he Ks a ton. Just about everyone Ks a lot on the Pirates, so we're more interested in the type of K. Is it lack of bat speed/pitch recognition? Is it no plate discipline? Or does he watch called 3rd strikes with the bat on his shoulder? We are K connoisseurs here in Pittsburgh. Our OF sucks, so Garcia will get a spot, probably in LF, which is as big as CF in PNC.

I know nothing about Travieso or what he could bring, but there's a line out the door for all pitching spots for awhile.

thanks. Besides Crochet and Grey, the Sox also have Bryan Bello in the rotation. Although Grey may be the number two starter, many fans think he should be no higher than fourth. Oviedo should help the rotation.

Password. That's why he has the nickname.

Sox Prospects does a good job breaking down players. He was behind at least 4 and possibly 5 other young outfielders in Boston, hence the trade. He didn't strike out quite so much until AAA, so I think it was partly an adjustment he needs to make.

The Sox need a #2. Gray is not that, Neither is Bello. Other than the kids, they have Crochet, 2 #3s at best, and a couple, two/tree others who can spot start if their arms are stretched out.

I hope Breslow is not banking on the kids to go lights out to start the season.

He's got about 8 Major League starters at the moment. My guess is that they view Gray as a 2-3 and Oviedo as a 3-4. Bello is a 3-4. Can any one of Tolle, Early or Harrison become a #2? Absolutely. Are they relying on that? I doubt it. Witherspoon is possibly an ace too, but is a year or two away.

I like these moves because the Sox can now move Perales and/or whoever they consider most expendable among Harrison and Early to get that #2. I don't think they know yet what that looks like, but with a surplus of controlled starters and outfielders, they have assets to make that trade. Garcia was never going to crack the lineup, so this is a good move. I think Oviedo also has potential as a closer.

Damn, I forgot about Sandoval and some others. The pitching depth is nuts.

You have to figure there is a big move coming, where there are unloading several arms along with Duran or another outfielder. Their strength is OF and SP depth/SP prospects.
I do NOT want to move Early though. Loved what he showed after he was called up.
